Looks like one of my cherry shrimp is berried. I know i have a few males, but didnt know if they were mature enough to mate.

If i understand it right the female holds onto the sperm then releases her eggs which pass over it which she holds underneath? My question is can they release eggs without having mated ie unfertilised?

I'm not an expert, but I think if they have eggs, they're always already fertilised, haven't heard of them producing unfertilised eggs. Be interested to hear if anyone can confirm this though.

Thats the information i was reading so just thought i would double check here. They seem to be able to hold onto sperm from different males as well althoug im mot sure if they can detect the quality of it before dropping them.

Never happened in my shrimp tank. Always after I saw a berried female it ended up having shrimplets. But by now you already know if they were fertilized, right?

Well yeah i have quite a few babies, and 3 berried females. As far as im aware the females hold onto the sperm. and lowers her eggs over them from the saddle. I suppose if you had only one male, and he was shooting blanks that might result in them being unfertilised. My thinking was the eggs they carry would pass down over time if there not was any males present...you know?...something like a period LOL.

This "period" is rather not happening to shrimps. In my main aquarium I had few red females and I never saw them berried. Actually this is why I noticed that I have only females. I had them for quite some months, they grew huge and still no berried ones.

As an experiment I put them all in the small shrimp tank with my yellow group that was breeding from time to time. Only then one of the red females became berried. But I don't recommend mixing them. Babies of red female and yellow male came out almost transparent yellow. So I moved red ones to my guppy tank.

Well no id not imagine a shrimp actually having a period 🙂

Im only now learning about shrimp genetics, and what colours you can achieve by mixing them. Ive not been keeping them long so just focusing on their needs at the moment.
