Any ideas on a new scape for my Corbo wood?

I recently moved and had to destroy my previous scape. I have a rather large piece of Corbo wood which I would like to use as a focal point for a new low-tech and epiphytes-only scape. I was thinking an island style layout. I have contemplated about how to complete my hardscape but I just cannot make up my mind on the type and quantity for the rocks. I am leaning towards stackable porous rocks, either black lava rock or black star lava rock. I also have a 2nd smaller Corbo piece which I could also use. I would appreciate any ideas on how to proceed.

I recently rescaped my Fluval Flex and decided on epiphytes only. A large java fern growing on a piece of wood, sat on top of a flatish pebble from a Devon beach with various anubius and buce stuck to it. So far it's been a success and for the first time, zero algae. The anubius and buce are shaded by the fern, the lights are on for seven hours but only running at around 50%. TNC Lite everyday and 50% water change once a week.

Keep us posted, hope it goes well.

Will the tank remain open top?
You could do an island style but raise your center peace wood to break the surface.
That would allow you the option of some emergent growth. I’m not sure how you would handle the light bar positioning though.

It’s such a nice bit of wood, I dont think you can go wrong however it’s placed. Just don’t cover it all up.

@G mac nice scape. I was also considering running my twinstar at 50% (or actually even less than that) but with a longer photoperiod (8-9hrs).

@Little indeed, it will remain open top. I repositioned the wood to (slightly) break the surface and it didn't affect the light bar positioning. I agree with your comment not to cover it all up, I was thinking the same thing 😉 I've now also added my 2nd wood. Not sure what to do with the rocks. I have three Seiryu rocks, I could either top up or replace them with a different type (I was thinking black lava rocks).. Perhaps I could add rocks on the periphery of both wood pieces and even stack them to add some height and create more opportunities for attaching the epiphytes.

bad idea? perhaps best to just remove the 2nd wood and focus on complementing the 1st one with rocks and epiphytes around its base..

I just watched
The tank at 11:30ish has a tiny bit of emerged wood that reminded me of your new layout.
Definitely worth a watch for inspiration.

@Gio_St seeing the second piece of wood, have you considered a fallen tree sort of look? I think the first piece similar to where you had it originally with roots slightly more toward to viewer and tilted up more. Then the second piece like the fallen trunk pointing away to the left back corner. I guess more triangular than the island you were after originally, but I think it could look good. Its a great piece of wood.
Look forward to seeing it come together

That sort of thing yea, maybe the rocks back under to lift the first piece a little more. Personally, I liked the first orientation a bit better. Admittedly that second piece is longer than I initially realized, I thought they could be in line with one another, but now see that they can't. The shape feels visually stronger though.
That V shape you tried was bold! You'd maybe need some more wood to make it work, but it's an option for sure.
At the end of the day it's for you and it's your eye it needs to please. Keep us posted!

Day 1 of the new scape.
The flora includes java ferns, tridents, and buce reds.
There is a nice cave in the middle (which is already appreciated by the rams 🙂)
