My Mum (in her mid-70’s) has expressed an interest in having a small aquarium in her kitchen, possibly for a Betta.

I need something super easy and low maintenance - but of a simple and clean aesthetics (no external filters etc).

So I’ve been looking at the AquaOne Nano tanks - specifically the 30 and 40, and wondered if any folks on here have lived with one and have any opinions, and pros and cons they might want to offer up?

Particularly I’d like to know how effective the filter and pump system is, and how the light performs?

Hi Wookii,
I've got the aquanano 55 (40x40x40) and love it. I've removed the disposable cartridges and added sponges instead for the first part of filter and upgraded the light to a Week Aqua Z200 as the light was really the only weakness.

It's a brilliant bit of kit, you can customise your filtration however you want and the back sump part is huge compared to an internal filter and hides anything in the tank. The only thing to watch out for is don't let the water evaporate below a certain part or the filter starts spewing bubbles and gurgling (it takes a while for this to happen) I also added a glass top to try to reduce evaporation. The only other con for me now is I don't like the curved corners but to be honest it didn't bother me at first and it's really looking for flaws.

Itd give it an 8 out of 10. (Points off for light and disposable cartridges).

Good luck with your next purchase.

It's a great AIO tank, the stock equipment isn't going to win any ADA contests (specifically the lighting), but you'll still be able to grow low demand plants well, and the filtration is superb.

Thanks guys, where does the light fall down then - strength, colour rendition?

I plan to set the tank up for minimal maintenance, and minimal light requirements, so mainly epiphytes, a couple of crpyts, moss etc.

Both to be honest, I think it's just straight white led, and dim, so you won't get colours popping, but its still ok.

Anyone used to seeing higher end aquascaping equipment would be disappointed, but for general fishkeepers I don't think anyone would much complain.

I don't think you'd struggle to grow the above, if you have a consistent fertiliser.

Thanks @Aqua360

On the filter am I right in thinking its top draw only (i.e. over the weir)? Do you get much detritus accumulation as a result?

Am I right in thinking there are three filter compartments in the rear sump. Presumably the last one house the pump and heater, what does it come with a foam block for the middle compartment? Do you also have a foam block in the first compartment to act as a pre-filter?

How is the flow from the pump, is it suitable for a Betta?

Yes the water flows from the top right through the disposable section down into the next where there's a glass partition into the next.

This illustrates better than I can describe (if link blocked type aquanano filter in YouTube)

The supplied pump came with high and low settings and a has various filter output methods, I'd positioned the spray bar to flow down the back wall so that there wasn't too much surface movement for a bog standard betta I'd had for a few years.

The light I'd got with it was wrgb but really was cosmetic (pish)

I've got the 40 and 60 setup plus another 40 I picked up for free as it had a cracked back panel.
I really like these tanks and if I see them cheap/free I tend to buy them.
The filter/sump section at the back is terrible.
Mulm accumulates back there and it's really difficult to get to with a siphon hose.
I cut it out and replace with an internal or canister filter.
As others have said the light isn't great. The one I have is from one of the 40s and it has an odd mix of pink and blue LEDs. Not sure how old it is as it came with the free tank so they may have changed to a more white mix now.
