Alternative lighting regime

If I grow out plants in the sump, would you have it Illuminated the same time period as the main tank or have them on at different times.

It's a low tech set up if it makes any difference, so no carbon dioxide being added to the setup.
 
In marine tanks I always ran light over the sump to grow algae on the opposite cycle to the tank as the oxygenation etc then balances the PH.

Also you don't want your sump competing with your display for CO2
 
Sounds like a good idea to me. Would be even better if you had CO2 injection. If you have ferts then maybe it would make sense to split dosing into two (but not necessarily two halves).
 
I was leaning to alternate again as when it was an alage filter, then experiment with the SAD lamp to see how long works best at close proximity.

Though being almost bare is handy at the moment as had a few tube riders
