Adding Tropica soil

Morning,

I'm wanting to add some Tropica soil to my tank but last time I did this, it caused an ammonia spike.

Is there a way I can add some without this happening again (soaking for a few days beforehand?)?

Alternatively, is there an inert substrate that is similar in size, shape and colour that I could use instead? Im just wanting to add some to the sides of the tank so that it creates a central sand area.

you can also try one of the shrimp soils, like dennerle shrimp king, they have no ammonia

soak it in a bucket of water for a fortnight, changing the water a few times. Although it'll then be damp and not as easy to just pour into the tank
