Adding Oxygen at Night

Do the bacteria on the sponge require it? Sometimes I have to switch my pump off at night as I'm sleeping in the living room...
Bacteria don't need bubbles yet they need dissolved oxygen. When your filter is running dissolved oxygen flows to the filter with water. But if you switch it off, well, a rather dangerous situation may follow. Bacteria cannot respire oxygen, so they respire nitrate, and namely sulfate. The product is hydrogen sulfide...
It is generally agreed that switching off any filter for a period exceeding an hour or so is not wise.
