I have had a 24x12x12" setup for a few weeks, I have a FE CO2 setup on it, Tropica Plant Substrate + Capsules topped off with sand. Full EI ferts, CO2 in the yellow, good flow x15 turnover of the water. Lighting is 48w T5, but only 1 currently set to light, took the other out for the time being.

Should I fire up the the 2nd light?

Opps, I should have said 2x24w and only one is running, Sorry!

Should I fire up the 2nd for 48w total?

Sorry, what I meant to say was I have 2x24w with just 1 lamp running

So should I fire up the 2nd one to give me 48w total?

Cheers,
Johnny

I have a 60 litre Dennerle, dimensions are different to yours, 15"x15"x16"h , so deeper and a cube. They are plant specialists in their own right and provided 2x 11w for this tank. If your 24w extends the length of your tank or near abouts, you dont really need to be adding extra light to grow most plants well. I think the idea is to make light the limiting factor if using the EI method.

I am getting PAR readings of 35-40 at the substrate, so in your 12" deep tank it will likely be higher under the lights.

I find it easier to run your kind of tank with 3x15w t8s than 2x24w t5s.
You could try using both tubes for a few days and check for GDA on glass (that means you should dose more) but I wouldn't do that if your tank is not heavily planted yet.
