I'd personally let it fill in alot more before the first cut, in my mind the longer you let the plant strengthen, the better the fresh growth always seems to come out. Especially if the plant only has a few nodes of strong growth after being planted. However Ludwigia is bulletproof and if its bugging you, trim and replant the trimmed section.
