I fill my tanks straight from the tap with a hosepipe, add prime to the tank for the tank volume, never had any issues with fish or filter bacteria.

Always worth a couple of weeks of regular 50% water changes to get the tank stable though IMHO :-)

There are methods of running low energy tanks which require little to no water changes Diana walstads method springs to mind, I have found water changes beneficial though even for my low energy setups, not sure of the science behind much of the hobby tbh I'm just happier doing them :-)

Water changes are used in the freshwater side of the hobby to remove waste and organics from the tank, IME the cleaner my tanks the less algae I have.

Why not glue the coins on the outside ?

Prime will neutralise the chlorine/chloramine so your only issue would be the temp difference, maybe small water changes frequently and your chiller will equalise the temp.

I get a 5ltr bottle of ro from my lfs for topping up my small tanks lasts about 2 weeks and no need to dechlorinate.

I did try a bit of greenhouse shading mesh cut and rolled to fit, it worked ok but blocked easily if I'd done a trim and tbh if I run mine for an hour or so I don't seem to get the film anyway.

That should work out Sam, don't think my cherries could see in the dark so they got sucked in.

I run mine on a timer for a couple of hours during the photoperiod seems to have stopped it catching my cherry shrimp, I do check and clean sponge daily though.

Carbon and lots of large water changes, trim and remove any melt if the plants have good roots they may recover, good luck with it Martin.

I've had surface film reappear since the wife's had the central heating on, the only tank it's not on is in the kitchen where there is no radiator so I'm blaming the central heating and buying a skimmer :lol:

Find alternative uses for the waste and feel guilt free, I don't use much ro so I buy from my lfs let them feel guilty about the waste.

I do at least two to three a week depending on tank, weekday ones always during the last hour or so of the photoperiod around 9ish(evening) weekend mornings, I keep all my trimming tasks for the weekend filter and glass cleaning chores done on weekdays.

Hi roly, I break mine up for my shrimp nano then pour some boiling water on from the kettle so they sink.

I do them because I like to :-) just change 10% rather than 50 % if your looking for less hassle.

The slime coat, renders the Purigen useless/unable to recharge, prime is the recommended dechlorinater to use with Purigen.

The Amazonia will buffer the water it depends on the param's of the water you add how long this process may take.
