    Established tank Brown Algae

Could be the organics released by the plants triggering diatoms ? Increased water changes should get the tank back on track again, though ime sometimes this can take a few weeks.

How to get rid of Cyano/blue green algae on new floating plants?

Maybe worth washing it off as much as possible then try a few days blackout (place container in a bin liner) or the kno3 dw advised, I've had good success eradicating BGA from a few scapers with both methods.

Please help me get my tank back under control

Your certainly getting the required ph drop, I would try 6 hour photoperiod, manually remove as much algae as possible with each water change, 3 times water change a week if possible untill the tank is back on track, getting the plants strong and healthy again is key.

Please help me get my tank back under control

8.4-6.6 seems like a big drop Chris, best way to profile your ph is take a reading as the Co2 turns on then every hour untill lights on (if this is possible :-)) you should aim for a 1 point drop by lights on then every hour untill lights off, this should remain around the 1 point mark for...

Help !! Unsightly Brown / Black Algae

Think maybe the lighting is too bright for the plants you have, if you can raise the unit higher it'll lower the intensity, also cut the duration to 5 or 6 hours whilst you carry out some large 50-60% water changes every few days to remove as much of the algae as possible, as stu alluded to 40...

    Brown algae help

Hi, algae will be feeding on the organic's released by the decaying plant leaves, remove all the damaged leaves and carry out a couple of water changes per week if possible untill the tank is stable again.

    Algae ID

Yes Bex, it's supposed the fluctuating co2 levels can trigger algae, when I was a new hobbyist I followed this advice, I could only change water very early before work or very late after work, needless to say I only changed water when I was off and had no end of algae issues, untill reading the...

    Algae ID

Possibly filamentous diatoms Bex, keep rubbing it off the plants and syphon out with a waterchange, common in new setups, it'll disappear as your tank matures, the hydrocotyle looks like the emersed growth is dying off, trim and remove all the damaged leaves as the decomposing plants will feed...

    Green spot algae on anubias

If you can remove them from the tank I've found a good wipe of the leaves with diluted lemon juice removes the GSA, then as wisey stated try and shade them a bit more with other plants.

    New tank green algae outbreak

The shrimp will help a lot, I've had a 2month battle with the same algae in my 3ft, it's still hanging on but I have noticed growth slowing over the last couple of weeks, keep at it Andy, your taking all the right steps to keep it in check.
  13. tim

    Cant clean up green water

Yes a blackout may help, I would say the issue arose from your rearrangement of the tank which caused an ammonia spike, then unfortunately you boiled your filter media which would have killed any bacteria so essentially you are in new setup territory, personally I would carry out plenty of 50%...

    Plant mass vs algae

Uproot it, give the area a good clean and replant with the pogo Helfri, worth doing a few waterchanges and lowering light intensity untill the new plant adjust's especially if it's been grown emmersed. Good luck with it victor, keeps us posted.
  16. tim

    Plant mass vs algae

You don't have to uproot it trim down to substrate level and it'll grow back nice and dense, if your concerned about algae reduce light intensity for a while after the trim.

Gba?? Please help not sure what this is

If the algae on the plants is the same as the hardscape I would go with cladophora, very difficult to remove, http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm.

  19. tim

How to get rid of algae on fluorite?

55w on for 12 hours is way too much light IMO, 6-8 hours a day is more than your plants need IMHO and personally the hour off won't help either. Also your plant mass sounds extremely low. You can use a liquid carbon product like excel to spot dose the problem algae, it won't disappear on It's own.
  20. tim

How can i get MORE algae?

Leave some cobble stones in water in the sunniest spot you can find, they should develop a nice coating of algae, artificial light over the tub could also work as sunshine is hard to come by this time of year in the uk.

    Algae problems

You could address both, six hour photoperiod whilst dealing with issues should be plenty also remove the reflectors from the bulbs if they are fitted or raise the bulbs further away from the tank. When to re-plant after algae break out

Hi kitch, as long as you feel you have rectified your issues add more plants, this may require a few extra water changes over a month or so while they adapt and also an increase in co2 for the extra plant mass, if you feel algae may return I'd be inclined to wait and make sure the regrowth on...

    BGA Help

I'm with science fiction and Al, improved flow manual removal and increased nitrogen based ferts like tropica specialised should work, IMO I wouldn't use hydrogen peroxide unless you have no livestock present or definitely know how much to dose.

    Dosing extra phospate- how much?

Your assumptions are correct, IF correct ei levels are being dosed, my point is adding more will not cause problems, if GSA stops growing then you can assume you weren't dosing the correct ei levels and other parameters ie light, co2, flow are good, if it continues to grow then you need to look...
  29. tim

    Dosing extra phospate- how much?

No, I have read on the forum to add extra phosphate to combat GSA, I am implying if that doesn't solve it it is probably down to over lighting to the co2 given.
  30. tim

    Dosing extra phospate- how much?

Not sure on the science behind it, for me it rules out ferts and makes me sort out lighting, flow and co2.
  31. tim

    Dosing extra phospate- how much?

I've found adding an extra teaspoon to my macro mix effective also look at lighting and flow if you dose dry an extra pinch or two won't hurt, unfortunately GSA is a bit of a curse with slower growers I tend to get it on anubias staurogyne and buces, but never crypts, go figure o_O

Try to remove as much as possible and change as much water as possible without disturbing substrate too much it's thought ammonia spikes are a cause for this and I believe this to be the case, I used to get this in a Pygmy puffer tank I had every time I trimmed the moss in the tank which was...

    BGA, aquasoil covering sand

I get some bga along my substrate every spring due to sunlight lasts for a month or two, I normally use a credit card to scrape it away and syphon it out of the tank as I'm doing this, other solution is to cover the substrate line with tape or card if yours stems from ambient light hitting the...

    Algae problems

Only way to get rid of the unsightly stuff is to trim it off the plants and remove it from the tank, jbl ferropol is lacking in NPK which plants need, you may have flow/distribution issues around the substrate area of your tank which a stronger filter or a power head could resolve, I would...

    Bucephalandra algae problem

I can't take credit for the idea I think I read it on ukaps somewhere, I was able to take my anubias out of the tank wipe the leaves with cotton pad soaked in lemon juice GSA came off easily, quick rinse and back in, not sure if this could be used in tank, but preferable to glut for me.
  41. tim

    BBA I've tried everything

Hi dunkirkpie, your drop checker needs to be towards the lime green colour at the start of the photoperiod for optimum plant growth, also bba needs to be manually removed from the tank no amount of co2 will make it disappear IME trim all affected plants scrape and scrub hardscape and follow up...

    bacterial colony or algae?

Hi rob, I've found 50% of the tank volume with the frequency stated above good on start up even with low techs, you should be able to drop this to around 20% weekly as the tank matures, 50% weekly being the norm for high techs, though I've found I need to carry out two per week on my 3ft to keep...

    bacterial colony or algae?

No panic, but advice on the forum is the same for all new setups daily water changes week 1 every other day week 2 every third day week 3 twice week 4 this will surely deal with ammonia from new aquasoil.

A year of algae and constant battles

  49. tim

A year of algae and constant battles

Pressurised co2 or no co2 would be the way I'd go with t8s sound like your suffering from co2 fluctuations/shortfall.

    Diatoms - Blackout Necessary?

I agree with you better to resolve than mask the problem, purigen was preferable to me than add ottos or suchlike, diatoms are common with immature setups, constant cleaning and water changes will see them off not so easy if plants as well as hard scape is affected, so I opted for purigen.
  51. tim

    Diatoms - Blackout Necessary?

Hi Richard, increased light will generally increase algae ime, Ian holdich advised me to add purigen to my filter when I was suffering diatoms and I must say it worked a treat.
  52. tim

am I loosing the battle against brown algae?

IMHO without light algae can not grow, t5's especially high output t5's whether Chinese made or not is high lighting. I never suffered diatoms when I had low light t8 tubes.
  53. tim

    GSA

Try adding the 2tsp to 250mls and dosing the same Bert, I do notice a bit of GSA on my glass when I don't garden as often as I should so I assume it's the increase in mass driving demand.

Still suffering with Black Beard Algae (BBA)! :(

    BBA on substrate between glosso...

Hi Ben, have you considered a spray bar along the back wall of the tank, this can improve flow distribution at substrate. As stated above spot dosing liquid carbon onto the bba with the filter off should kill it you can then use some 9/12 filter hose to syphon it out.
  57. tim

    Diatoms Enigma

Faster growth will require more maintenance maybe keep it as it is, and clean/ water change two to three times weekly if possible. I find nanos quite demanding in the maintenance department.
  58. tim

    Diatoms Enigma

Your list should contain too much light 9 hours is a long photoperiod mate most folks using t5s use 6-8 hours.
  59. tim

    stag algae

Hi Gary, you should be able to double recommended dose for a while to overcome the algae I think the norm is 1ml per 50 litres so you could go 3-4ml spot dosing takes a while but is effective just turn filters off for 5-10 mins and dose affected plants with a pipette then turn filter back on.

After four months (brown hair algae)

Hi mate, I would aim to have co2 on at least 2 hours before lights on and tweak from there, you need to aim for optimum concentration at lights on for the plants, mine is currently on 3 hours before and goes off 2 hours before lights out, liquid carbon will help overcome any shortfalls in your...

After four months (brown hair algae)

    algae back with a vengance

Don't do it mate I run an old aquatropic tank with t8s and co2 and pretty much I can grow anything in it with co2,t5s have been the undoing of my planted tanks they are more powerful than most people think again just my opinion.
  63. tim

    algae back with a vengance

Hi plantnoob, the only thing in my opinion that causes algae is excess light low tech tanks can and will suffer this too, it's all about tank management/ balance.

    Liquid carbon bath

Hi zanguli, I've used 5ml in 10 litres of water for a carbon bath and left plants in for 30 mins- an hour then straight into dechlorinated water may need to repeat a couple of times, also be aware liquid carbon can adversely affect some plants.

    algae back with a vengance

Hi, why not drop to one tube and back the co2 off a little for your livestock and see if there's an improvement or suspend the lighting if possible to lower the intensity. Keep hassling the algae and you will get on top of it.
  67. tim

    Hair Algae on HC

11w is plenty IMO but you need to have co2 at optimum at lights on, whichever intensity you decide to run with co2 needs to run for a couple of hours before photoperiod if you can't get a cheap timer run it 24/7 at a lower rate.
  70. tim

    Hair Algae on HC

How is your co2 running 24/7 or are you using same timer as for your lights, I would guess your lighting is high for an ebi but if you can match it with co2 and nutrients plants will grow.

    Brown algae

Hi mate, I have read the article you linked before also Diana walstads book and can't disagree with the methods advocated, they just seem to lead to more algae issues for my tanks which are mostly nano's, smaller water volume so maybe more prone to water quality issues anyway, just through my...
