    Substrate and sand

The jbl aquabasis plus needs to be capped with gravel, it's a base layer not a complete substrate

How to dry aqua soil ?

You can dry it out on trays in a very low oven mate, as long as the Mrs allows it :-)

    Swapping substrate

Hi Dave, all the various plant substrates will release amonia to varying degrees, you can place the substrate in a bucket or container and fill with water, change water daily for a week or so to remove amonia then use in tank, the amonia spike should be less and the mature filter will help along...

    Attractive top substrate required

You need to use a cap larger than the Colombo or it will rise above the top layer when ever you move stuff around, some of the unipac coarse sand/gravel range may be suitable.

    Cycling 35l tank with AquaSoil

Amazonia will contain more than enough nutrients to negate the need for osmocote it also has great cec so will absorb nutrients when you add fertiliser to the tank.

    Dennerle Deponit Professional

I've never used it but it looks similar to jbl aquabasis which I have used, 2-5 cm layer capped with double the depth of gravel/sand has worked well for me, as for leaching always worth carrying out a few large water changes in the first few weeks even with low tech ime, hope this helps.

Adding Fresh ADA Aquasoil to an established tank??

I've used that method before and still dust everywhere, but I added quite a lot more than 5 ltrs and it was normal not powder, maybe fine mate worth having a bucket and syphon on hand to try and suck out the dust before it settles if it starts to cloud badly, let us know how you get on Steve.

Adding Fresh ADA Aquasoil to an established tank??

The ammonia spike will be negligible compared to your tank size IMHO Steve my concern is the dust kicked up adding aquasoil has a habit of being blown around the tank and is a real pita to remove, I've only managed to add aquasoil successfully via a tube and funnel, tube needs to be long enough...

Planting in vitro plants with ADA Amazonia

With the few emmersed setups I've had I cling film completely and mist every couple of days no additional heater, usually around 12 hours of t5 lighting, this method has worked well for me. I did have a whole propagator of Monte Carlo melt in the summer, I became distracted and didn't check or...

    Substrate for a planted hob?

Wouldn't they need capping with something like molar clay to stop them floating ?? Ferns, anubias, hydrocotyle species will root into coarse sponge Ime.

    Substrate for restarting a tank

Any of the unipac fine/ coarse sands are really good value for money IMO, but if your going full on high tech why not go for ada Amazonia or tropica's available from forum sponsor http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/tropica-aquarium-soil-9l-p-7095.html

    I think I've made a bad mistake

As long as your adding nutrients it will store them, manado doesn't contain any so you should dose a comprehensive fert containing macro and micro elements.
  15. tim

    Depth question !

Don't think it would add much extra benefit tbh, as long as your dosing the water column, if you want to add depth at the rear of the tank I've seen it layered with gravel so it would be nearer the plant roots at the rear of the tank.

    Substrate For Reparium Planter?

I've used cat litter on its own in shower caddies as planters before worked well, you just need to make sure you line them with fine enough mesh to stop it falling through.

    Eco-Complete or ADA Soil

Increased nutrients will surely drive the the need for increased co2 AT unlimited light levels, maybe this is the issue with the Amazonia you have, ahem  no I'm not taking the piss or trying to "flush an angry man with more wisdom", you seem to be intent on proving Amazonia is a bad...

    Eco-Complete or ADA Soil

Colombo florabase is maybe another consideration.
  19. tim

    Started making substrate. Opinions please.

Hi mate, not sure about your substrate questions but I do know hc doesn't require acidic water, though it does require plenty of co2 flowing around the substrate level of the tank.

    sand without nutrition

Ah ok makes sense, I've seen people use filter mesh bags full of pumice or lava to bulk out substrate, I've capped florabase with Senegal sand in my 3ft tank without any issues other than when I uproot plants, I just use a small hose to syphon the florabase out after uprooting, so I would say...

Why so you want to cap the gravel Martin ? Is it to save on the amount of amozonia ?

    Unipac Micro Gravel

Hindsight is a wonderful tool :-) in hindsight I'd have found ukaps a year earlier and saved a fair few hundred quid :-) it made me better equipped to work with what I had though mate, and I vehemently believe you will provide a healthier life style by providing a well looked after planted tank...
  23. tim

    Unipac Micro Gravel

You could consider unipac Limpopo sand as oppose the micro gravel little smaller and smoother but still black ( slightly greyish)
  24. tim

    Unipac Micro Gravel

IMHO water quality and a clean substrate in a planted tank plus good numbers will keep your Corries happy, I've kept them on various substrates with no issue. Obviously try and make sure the substrate is rounded not sharp. As mark stated Pygmy Corries spend a lot of time mid water though they do...

    Shrimp soil

You could always drop some in a glass with water and test after a couple of day mate, I wasn't adding livestock for a while so didn't worry about it tbh
  27. tim

    Shrimp soil

Didn't test for it tbh so don't know mate, sorry.

    Shrimp soil

Just over a month so far seems to be holding ok, must admit its dusty compared to Amazonia or florabase only other aquasoip a I've used, I think in a big tank or longer term scape I'd probably use it as a base layer under florabase.
  29. tim

    Shrimp soil

I'm using some of this at the moment, seems to be buffering my tap water well 8 out of the tap 6.5 in tank only testing with strips so not accurate I know but plants are doing ok so far

I have 12 of these little guys in my 90cm high tech London tap haven't tested ph hardness etc etc but the lfs I got them from kept them in the hard water section of the store Tds of 400 odd my tank goes from 300 wc day to 350 end of the week and they are thriving even spawning the other day then...

    Crushed Lava (Fuji Grit)

This looks good, may be a little sharp but ill be considering this stuff to bulk out substrate when I get round to starting my next project.

    Will ada soil 'dry out'

You can cling film the tank to stop dust settling on the soil if its an open top tank.

    Best aquascaping sand? Opinions please.

Hey nath I've never used Ada sands but unipac do a nice range :-) I used Senegal in my shrimp nano if you look at the later images Ian holdich uses tana in his signature scape my lfs just got some big bags in and I'm itching to rescape with sand foreground for the price I would go with the unipac.

Agree with whitey Ada or if your going to keep shrimp ebi gold is another possibility don't think you'll need 14 kg though
  42. tim

    Fluval Edge

    Stratum in a Sock ?

I would think tights would be too fine for the roots to penetrate I have used the green house shading sold by garden centres cut and placed over jbl aqua basis then topped with gravel to good effect think you'd be fine with the ammonia I replaced the substrate in a fluval edge for flora base...
  44. tim

    Please help!

Personally mate I would dry out the Amazonia then cap it with the ebi gold rather than mix it
