I think filter preference is a lot down to what you find easier to maintain. I'm definately leaning towards the sponge blocks, I just pull in off, rinse it in the bucket of water I've just emptied out of the tank and put it back on. I've the powerhead running it just hung over the tank edge...
Hot water issues are around water storage tanks or water softeners. If that applies maybe dig a bit deeper. If it's just hot water out of a combi boiler I don't think there are any issues.
Aquaone have used to do a range with rounded front corners I've a 70l one, I know they had a 200l ish one too, but not sure if it is still available or if they did anything bigger. They were all rimmed though I think.
I think it's been the norm for a long time (decades). If you go into most fish shops they'll have a display of pre-made tanks to choose from. A lot of complete setups too - lights, filter all included. There is a much wider variety now than there used to be and more aimed at the aquascaping...
I agree the suction cups are useless. One I brought separately had a hanger to go over the rim, but my original that came with a shrimp set didn't. I made my own hanger by heating up a bit of plastic and bending it then using small cable ties to attach the back plate. Obviously only works on...
What sort of capacity do you want/need? For example, I like the aquael mini pat - which is a small powered sponge filter. I've doubled it's capacity by extending the tube and using a longer sponge. You can buy the parts pre-made here: Poret® Sponge Replacement for Aquael Pat Mini Filter 20cm -...
I'd be interested in what you think on noise level when it arrives. I have an aquaclear but found it annoyingly noisy so I feed it from an internal pump instead of the built in one.
Turn the filter off for half and hour and watch the fish - if you see a positive change in behaviour then you can try more complicated options to adjust the flow rate :)
You could use flexible pipe on a submersed pump to feed it so you can place the pump wherever you like to improve the look. A DIY'd a breeding box (for actual fry) and had it fed from a pump one corner of the 90cm tank with a line (clear airline) going across to the diagonal opposite.
If it's open top, you could consider growing plants emersed in the top - that would keep them out of reach of the fish but give you some of the benefits of their uptake of nutrients from the tank.
Glad you figured it out. I just run it now and then when I want to clear the film or when it gets very hot in summer as I don't like the noise either. Great filters though - small, flexible, easy to clean and do the job well.
Use the venturi on the pat mini now and then and the air will break up the surface - you don't need it all the time, so just run it when your not there and you'll probably find that's enough to keep the film away when you are :)
Yep, my 'filter clean' is just pulling the sponges off the intake and squeezing them out in a bucket of water when I'm water changing. The filter hardly ever gets touched. It's just so quick and easy.
Different tank/purpose but I used a thin piece of perspex and heated it to bend it over to make a hook that went over the tank rim. Make a couple of holes and cable tied the filter back plate to that. You could add a layer of rubber under the hook. I was more trying to eliminate the annoying...
I noticed there is an ebay seller offering foam blocks and longer tubes to fit the aquael: Aquarium Poret® Sponge Foam Replacement for Aquael Pat Mini Filter Shrimp Fish | eBay haven't tried them, but I'm tempted - setting up a 75l atm - just a pre-made version of Darrel's diy.
Glad it's working for you :) I find them very handy for all sorts, they fit on this style air lift filter if you want to increase sponge area: Air Driven Sponge Filter Aquarium Fish Tank Bio-Sponge Filter Discus BABY BREED | eBay and I've used them to drive breeding boxes that are designed to...
Big course foam will need least cleaning/reduce flow the least. You could put a bit of a pair of tights/stocking over it, but I think you'd end up needing more frequent cleaning.
Just to go back a step... why does javamoss require a filter? It grows quite happily in a jar on a window sill with zero filtration. If it's to remove mulm, you could floof it with a turkey baster at water change time to clean it out.
Forums are great for learning from other peoples mistakes/experience, but once you've listened to what they have to say don't be afraid to go with what you want. It's ok to try things and even to screw up and get it wrong. If someone says 'I told you so' then shame on them. Experiments and...
A HMF with your strongest power head behind? Or something like this with the extended module: https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/internal-filters/670-jbl-cristalprofi-m-greenline-4014162609601.html - neat looking and the shrimps would love it but I'm not sure if that would be enough flow on it's own.
My parents have their (eheim) canisters at the same level as the tanks. Actually they technically have them in the tanks, walled off in a corner. So if it leaked it would fill the compartment and over flow back into the tank (never happened that I remember). The tanks are 30+ years old...
This is out of my 30L, last cleaned 2 weeks ago (very thoroughly twice) bucket was what I syphoned out of the bottom (a lot of shrimp poop!) and the jug is the sponge filter contents - 100ml of goo.
That's normal isn't it - do other people not get it? My tank stays pretty clean, I don't often syphon but that's what it looks like after I rinse my filter pads. It's poop and plant decay. If you've got shrimp/algae eaters they'll be eating constantly and turning it into poop not just what you...
My 'quarantine' tank has ended up with gravel, some wood, plant off cuts and floating plants. I figure I could chuck/wash stuff if I ever really had to, but the fish will be more relaxed whilst in there than a bare tank.... and it looks better. Got some Otos chilling out in there at the moment...
