    Amano with Bloody Marys???

The male amanos are quite a bit smaller as adults than the females if you want to keep them more proportionate (although still about double the size of the adult cherries) you could select for them. An adult female amano is huge and chunky compared to a cherry shimp. They are quite pushy...

    Amano with Bloody Marys???

Wouldn't guarentee they don't off a few shrimplets or munch on a dying/dead shrimp, but I've kept them in the same tanks and never observed them going for cherries.

    Culturing daphnia

An old bucket, cover the bottom with old autumn leaves, fill with rain water - top up as evaporates. They'll disappear over winter but hopefully be back in spring. I'd try that as a back up to the more managed option, then you've got some to restart your culture if you need them :)

    Two water questions (sort of...)

Yes, free food. I guess you could potentially accidently transfer something else e.g. a damsonfly larve - just give what you've netting out a once over for any weird critters. If you have RO then use it, but if you are changing 50% a week, then using tap your tank should stablise at a slightly...

    Specific shrimp food?

There is a lot of crossover so if you feed the otos fresh foods the shrimp will be happy. Mine love a bit of courgette :)

    Specific shrimp food?

I've fed them to various animals before, but I didn't know that you could de-sting them that way and eat them! They also dry well for storage and I would imagine then work as year around feed. If you want something commercial, I've used the shrimp kind complete, which seems to go down well...

    Specific shrimp food?

Cherry shrimp? 10gh would still be considered on the hard side so not an issue for them. Feeding would depend a lot on your tank. For example a tank heavy stocked with fish and bottom feeders, without plants that you clean religiously will have alot less natural food sources for shrimp than a...

    Mosquitoes in emersed tanks

There is a product I've seen people use in outdoor tubs with fish/plants (and I think even shrimp) but I can't remember the name. Might be on some of the summer tubbing youtube videos.

Shrimp acting weird in botanical setup

I'd say, if you caught it with only one loss and they are now acting normally, you panicked at just the right time and averted a problem. Keep a close eye as if it is something leaching that's effecting them, it may build up again.

Shrimp acting weird in botanical setup

I would be inclined to remove them into a temporary holding tank/container with fresh water - whatever they are normally in. Did you buy any new plants? Could you have introduced pesticide (some plants are dipped for snails).

Shrimp suitable for a planted community tank?

Dario dario (scarlet badis) are fine with cherries, they'll take babies but the adults are much too big. They are a nice fish but, they are tiny - about the same length as a cherry shrimp.

Cannot sustain cherry shrimp in planted tank

I struggle with them too, I'm pretty sure it's something they don't like about my water - they breed enough to have some about but they don't tend to reach full adult size. I chucked half dozen in my main tank about 6 months ago maybe though and they've done much better (with amanos funnily...

    GYO - Growing leaves and botanicals . . .

Not sure how long it takes alder to be old enough to produce cones - might need to be biggish so check before committing. Amano and Cherry Shrimp keep dying!

I would say step one is work out your GH. Are you using tap water? If so you should be able to get a rough figure from your local water report. Very soft water can also be a problem from shrimp as it effects their moulting. To be honest, a lot of things can be a problem for shrimp so you'll...

    Water Changes with Shrimplets

    Confused by my cherry shrimp

I've had problems before with adults moulting, but it didn't seem to effect them until they got to the 1cm ish mark i.e. there were babies but the adults clearly had issues. Have you checked your water hardness?

    A few shrimp questions . . .

Amanos are easiest to keep, cherries middling and crystals fussiest. I'd start with the first two and if it goes ok, then consider the later.

    Minerals for shrimp

Salty shrimp would work fine. If you want to keep it simple (but not necessarily the very cheapest option) I would use the salty shrimp GH/KH to remineralise your water to the values you want. Then use an all in one NPK included fertiliser like TNC Complete or Tropica Specialised. With Flourish...

    Shrimplets and Aquael Pat Mini

It's fine for shrimp-lets, they won't be sucked in. Is that the Aquael 30L shrimp set? I've the same tank/filter/light with cherries in and they are fine. They'll graze on the sponge but there is no suction there.

A good portion of 'nano' fish are fine with adult cherries and you can still get a colony if you plant heavily enough the babies have plenty of hiding spots.

    Karlie flamingo.

Have you checked your water company don't use Chloramine as well as chlorine? The former doesn't off-gas. It's a little odd to have no nitrates at all in any of your tanks. Acclimating shrimp option

I'd do B because you can do a much slower transition. If you are dripping then I'm guessing you are thinking hours/a day to do the change. If you do it with water changes you can spread it over a couple of weeks and don't have to catch out the shrimp. I'd mix a bucket full of new water and then...

I brought my daphnia inside last autumn, leaving about 1" of water in the bottom of a 10L bucket outside and there were none visible. Over winter it's filled with rain water and and there has been a fresh colony for at least the last couple of weeks. It's still been dropping to about 0/1 oC...

    Stocking Levels

I meant that in a fish and shrimp tank (any tank really), adding a fish you don't particularly want just as clean up wastes part of your overall fish capacity - the shrimps already designated space will do the same work anyway so pick just fish you really want to stock and have a bigger shoal of...
  29. tam

    Stocking Levels

Yep, Otos are great, but they need space and groups so it's a waste of capacity to just add them as clean up. Go for a nerite snail/shrimp. Think about what fish you want to keep before picking amano v. cherry. Cherry will limit the mouth size as they are smaller.
  30. tam

    Stocking Levels

http://www.aqadvisor.com/ You could easily mix shrimp and fish in there, although you'd want to go for a smaller fish species. There is quite a range of 'nano' species that would be suitable.

'Rili' RCS or just bad genes?

Males are generally less colourful than females - it's an all over thing rather than patches though. The bands like that are rili - if you don't want those then yes, removing any you don't like the look of will help limit the amount that show with that pattern overtime.

Are these products shrimp safe? Any other recommendations?

To confuse you and disagree ... I wouldn't worry about flow. The 10x turnover is generally for high tech CO2 added tanks, not low tech. I don't think that's your issue. I would keep it really simple. The TNC complete has a bit of everything your plants should need in. So try that to start. You...

Are these products shrimp safe? Any other recommendations?

I would start with just the fertiliser (TNC Complete). You've got some easy plants there so if they aren't doing well you're probably missing a nutrient. You may find just the fertiliser alone will fix it. I've dosed that brand with shrimp without issues. Showing some photos of your plants...

Will cherry shrimp be ok with my stock

Nope, I don't think that would work. I think it's highly likely even full size adult shrimp would be on the menu. Definitely as the shark grows - I'm presuming it's not full size i.e. 8"+ yet at that point the cardinals might be on the menu too. But, a little 20-30L tank makes a nice cherry...

    Help losing amano shrimp

Going hard water to soft is more difficult to cope with, but they are usually pretty tough. Are you using CO2? Acclimating Shrimp

It depends, how close is your LFS water to yours? If you are both using the same tap, it's probably pretty close so a temperature acclimate, or a short drip if you want, maybe all you need. If they are running hard tap and you are running soft remineralised RO, then you want a longer drip.

I would guess that it's just built up over time where you aren't changing quite enough water to balance out the ferts. Can Tetras kill shrimp?

In future you could consider drip acclimatising them - it pretty easy and gives you a bit more control over the speed of change. It doesn't sound like your water should be too drastically different though. I'm not familiar with Queensland Algae Shrimp - the normal amanos do like it a little...

    Can Tetras kill shrimp?

If you use tap water then your supplier may publish reports for hardness - were they from a local fish shop i.e. likely to have come from the same water? CO2 can be an issue sometimes too, if they aren't used to it - turning it off and then gradually increasing again can help them adjust...

    Fish suggestions with my RCS

Pretty much any of the 'nano' fish are ok. Yes, they are going to take some of the smallest shrimplets, but the population should still grow. The more plant cover the less of an issue it is - I expect in a bare tank you'd lose a lot more.

    First Shrimp

You may need to give the Nitrate test bottle a harder shake to get a reading. Although it could just be it's heavily plants and very little bioload. If you can get shrimp locally that are used to the same water that would be your best option.

    Importance of TDS Meters

Sounds good to me, just double check your GH on your water companies report and make sure it's inline with the needs of whichever species you are getting. Cherries are fairly flexible as long as it's not super soft.

    Importance of TDS Meters

Watch the plop and drop it's not always a good idea - if you read the comments she mentions it's fine for the same water (she's going from soft to soft) or to go from soft to hard, but not to do it going from very hard to soft.
