Yes it is Gunnera, but not Manicata. It's tinctoria which is what most plants sold as Manicata actually are. A more manageable 5-6ft high. Manicata grow huge! 😁

It's kind of a Jungle ...haven't paid alot of attention this year, seen a heron about occasionally. Also had a massive problem with ulcers on the goldfish last summer, didn't matter what I treated...salt, medication, water changes... Positive side I noticed a couple of Rainbow Shiner fry a month...

I am pleased, but constantly tweaking. There are things I would have done differently. The basic vision was a private "sub tropical oasis". I am not there yet. I think it will take some years.

I really, really don't want that kind of Heron to visit. I had not seen one in three years, but I have PIR water guns set up, fishing line around the perimeter and those horrid plastic things in the pond. They are supposed to not like closed in spaces, I'm hoping I don't get any bold ones...

I saw a bloody Heron on my neighbours roof a couple weeks ago. Trying out various deterrents, not seen it again and no fish taken. I have added Jikin and Watonai goldfish to the pond. Early in the season it is only just starting to awake.

Apologies, I missed your post. I leave them out they seem to cope well. I did this after seeing some people on mainland Europe do the same, colder Winters over there.

Hi Ian, still going but somewhat neglected. All have not received co2 injection for over a year and well there is a difference, but they still look OK, just not great. Gone off the boil a bit with them, but I know the interest will return. Going to try auto dosing the 400l with liquid CO2 in...

They are intergeneric crosses between Hardy waterlilies and tropical varieties. The one I think you are referring to (above) is called Siam 1. The ones behind it are normal cultivars. The deep pink is TanKwan, the lighter pink large flower is Sun fire and the ones in the back are Colorado. I...

It's grown in a bit... Also some aquarium plants like Lileopsis and Sagittaria subulata can survive through winter. Although last Winter was fairly mild the Sagittaria survived Beast from the East the previous Winter. Having said that Rainbow Shiners do pretty well.... As do Medaka...

Thanks Tim. Alot more planting and growing in is needed, but it will get there I hope.

    Journal Jungle pond project...

I planted some in the ground last year, but they never came up this year. I notice people have difficulty with it. I read that some people have more success with acid soil and wet conditions so I am trying it in the pond. If this doesn't work, I'll probably not try them again until someone...

    My Four Hour Pond

That is brilliant. Only concern is the sandstone affecting water chemistry. Looks fab though. Well done.

Thanks all , Zozo, what do you think if I put the cyperus into deeper water over winter, then its roots will hopefully not freeze?

As of this weekend 10-11th June: It's not all tidied up, I'm still planting and there is bags and tools all over the place. Stone (5 tonnes of it) may look a bit overwhelming at the moment, but I expect this to soften as the softscape grows in. Still awaiting a couple of purple and purple...

13th May, filling and trial run: I am using a 12000l flow through filter and a 6000l rated PondXpert pump. Over rating seems to be the thing to do.One of the things about ponds I notice is that hiding the liner can be a bigger. I thought about various options and in the end settled on...

9th May, Getting laid: I used Firestone? Liner for the main pond and supposedly more flexible but not quite as thick Greenseal for the stream and upper pool. Thick underlay went on first then the main pond liner followed by the stream liner. There is good overlap between the two I think a few...

4th May Digging deeper: Took the photo about 9 in the evening, sorry. Digging deeper on new build land is no fun. It's full of crap rubble and such. Also this land slopes towards the house, so one side of the pond is not the same as the other. With that in mind it's barely 60cm at the deepest...

30th April: I had an approximate idea of the shape and flow, but I had not drawn anything out. Last time I did anything pondy was when I was 10. I have always appreciated water in the garden, but never got around to doing anything about it. Looking at various different methods, at one point I...

Hi all, I have not really been on here for a long while and this year I have been focussed on the garden while the Rainbowfish have taken a backseat. I have lived in my current new build house for 6 years but have never really got around to doing much with the back garden. Getting it landscaped...

    Pond dechlorinators

I was wondering, can we actually use the pond version of dechlorinators/chloramine reducers? It is just that they seem to work out cheaper and having an 860litre seems to make more sense. Was just wondering if there is somthing very different in them that would make them unsuitable for aquarium...
