    When to use co2

I think the oto's and pleco will find plenty to eat between rasping on biofilm on back glass, rocks, wood, and your inclusion of vegetable matter. I suspect the Sword plant's to maybe be munched on by the pleco, and the sword plant's really need a deeper substrate to do well over the long term in...

    Glutaraldehyde!

Best to run the tank for a year or two without the stuff,Take photos to look back on.Then run tank(s) with the stuff for year or two and do likewise. Use it till the jugs empty, each day,not just for spot treating algae. Then one can form their own opinion. In otherwise CO2 limited condition,I...

    Glutaraldehyde!

I recall Barr once saying.."Try,Do,then speak" but Forum's don't always work that way. I have used Glut pulled straight out of the Jug and injected directly , and kept a few number's of fishes and invert's seemingly without harm, but began using the stuff with plant only tanks first, while...

How much carbon in natural waterways?

Fluctuating temps, available O2 ,CO2, PossibleTree canopy cover(plants may see only a couple hours of direct light) ,sediment's, all fluctuate wildly in nature. Most of the plants we attempt to grow, often times do not grow completely submerged in nature. I believe these factors and causes make...

Declining bubble count. What's going on?

Maybe just increase bubble count if livestock permit's. One bubble per second is fairly low . If the diffuser is clean, and rated for or sized for the volume of water your dealing with ,then no ,it should not become clogged overnight. If diffuser isn't kept clean for extended period's, then...

    Confusion over my CO2 kit

Would/will work for smaller tanks than 80 L I suspect. 80 to 500 L to me would indicate that within this range one Atomizer properly sized for volume of water the tank holds would suffice whereas, larger than 500 L might require two Atomizer's of diffuser's,or reactor along with possibly more...

Adding gas to low tech tank?

I believe any additional CO2 into the tank will benefit the plants, but the key would be moderate light and consistency of the gas. Many are those it seems, that believe because they are injecting CO2,that they have free license to use all the light they can muster. I think most would have an...

Not a good write up for liquid carbon

Yes,, My tanks early on were algae farms, with gob's of light,phosphate/nitrate removing media, sparse to no nutrient's added,no CO2 or carbon enhancement, and either sick fishes,or decaying plant's. Was not until the interweb, and stumbling along in forum threads here, and elsewhere bout various...

Not a good write up for liquid carbon

Yes, I have been using Glut (Metricide 14) as carbon supplement for the last year. Not in an affort to combat algae, but to help provide for the plant's in my otherwise low tech affair's where carbon is limiting factor.. As both Clive and Tom Barr have indicated in this thread, most would be...

Not a good write up for liquid carbon

Hydrogen peroxide present's it's own issues if used in excess. Anubia in particular will not tolerate much peroxide IME(melt's the leaves right off) Peroxide to my knowledge, does not discriminate between good bacteria or bad bacteria ,and is why most people would recommend removing most of the...

any benefit from using liquid CO2

I do not use the gas,but do use liquid carbon supplement in low tech NON CO2. Have seen modest improvement. Don't know that I would bother with daily dosing of the liquid carbon if I was also using pressurized gas.

    I couldn't increase my CO2

Very nice looking tank, and healthy looking Pinnatifida indicates your doing well. Don't see much room for more plant's unless tear down is on the horizon? I would be quite happy with the tank as is and might experiment with other plant's in another tank /scape?

    LIQUID CO2 WARNING by JBL

Google search "Metricide verses Seachem Excel yields much discussion on how long Excel or metricide is available for the plant's. In any event, I am of the mind that plant's can't use either product except for during photosynthesis. (gas included). So if Excel or Glut is used daily at or near...

    LIQUID CO2 WARNING by JBL

More interested in how plant's assimilate or transport liquid carbon product's within themselves. If one has never used it,they might see a slight improvement in low tech,NON CO2 tank. My own observation with Metricide 14 (minus the activator) which is similar/cheaper for larger tank's as Excel...

EasyCarbo dosing questions on a 30L aquarium...

Weekly dosing work's maybe with CO2 injection, but if the product is the only additional Carbon being used, then you must use as directed or don't waste your money buying it for it will have little effect if any with weekly rather than daily dosing.IME

    Starting over - liquid CO2

Benefit's of liquid CO2 in my low tech tank's are the difference between that which is produced naturally and only that, or a little more via liquid carbon. Might also help if CO2 injection/distribution was maybe not as much,or as efficiently distributed as one might think. No,I would not...

    Starting over - liquid CO2

For my low tech NON CO2 300 litre tank I had to hang the 208 watts of T5 lighting nearly ten inches above the surface of the water to avoid Hair algae on tips of tall plant's near the surface.(have since went to four T8 tubes) I might reduce light intensity and or duration after setting up the...

    Liquid Carbon Considerations

,My understanding was that gas is easily absorbed across leaves of plant's (stomata ) almost instantly whereas the liquid carbon supplement's must first be metabolized by the plant from within which is slower process, hence the suggested daily or every other day Excel, glut dosing suggestion's. Is...

Estimating CO2 injection rates in ml per minute

I like this, Much how I used to do to determine weight of large cichlid's I occasionally care/cared for to see what food's produced the most weight gain. I simply took plastic specimen container and filled it to near middle with water and weighed it. Then insert the fish and weigh the specimen...

Do fish become acclimatized to CO2?

I try to perform water change day before adding new fish to my tank's so that they have roughly a week before large water change to adapt to the new environment. Figure they have been removed from holding tank, bagged, shipped, and then plopped into dealer's tank and then mine. Lotta adjusting to...

    Question for ceg4048

I am reminded of the sounds of the locust's I hear while night fishing on the river/lakes . Although they have nothing of discernible importance to say far as I can tell, they none the less continue with their chatter as is their nature to do so. I suspect they enjoy hearing the sound they make.

    Drop checker placement

Ahh, I see. Just seemed to me that the gas would always be trying to escape upwards, so that any indication by drop checker might be influenced by higher content near the surface. I guess if one has moved the drop checker about the tank and adjusted CO2/flow accordingly, to ensure some...

    Drop checker placement

I do not use CO2 injection, but have noted with some curiosity that many folks place the drop checker fairly high on the glass in their tanks. Would not the CO2 content always be higher towards the surface in injected tanks and thereby give perhap's false estimate as to CO2 levels? Would it not...

    Co2 Injection / PH Swing

I understand what you are saying with regards to pH and have come to believe that conductivity, or total dissolved solids which may incude nutrients, minerals, salts,or organic matter are largely responsible for stress and or osmoregulatory problems when sudden changes occur. Is why we acclimate...

    Co2 Injection / PH Swing

I agree 100 percent. I am understanding that the small pH shifts that may occur between night and morning with the use of CO2 would be similar to that which takes place in nature and would be negligible with regards to osmoregulatory functions of fish so long as the shifts were not too drastic...
