Biological filtration - one for Darrel, Clive and co.

Issues with O2 seem to cause havoc in planted tanks due to higher organic matter, and biomass, if these die back much.....plants.........and their roots......which pump O2 into the sediment............so that sediment is a gaint filter essentially, then like Ady suggest, you(the aquarium) will...

    ADA Vuppa

I had high hopes, but the best thing for this solution is the Mame, it's all glass and the prefilter skimmer is quite effective and fun the watch and try and figure out how it works. Not cheap either, but, does the job really well, much better and muc less intrustive that the Vuppa or the Ehiem...

    ADA Vuppa

Adding acticvated carbon to a surface skimnmer that's a self powered internal filter basically, I think they should have though more about this device before marketing it. Needs to be external and out of the aquarium.

    Alfagrog for reducing Nitrates?

Plants do a better job and look prettier than any bacteria I've seen.

Water flow in the planted aquarium?

Nice article Darrel, that's a goodie. Post it here in the stickies, it's more than worthy. I'm a pleco freak and have had many species, bred quite a few and many of my flow patterns in all my tanks are designed for their needs. Anyone with as many plecos as I have is got the disease. They ARE...

Opinions on Cal Aqua Labs Efflux F1

They are nice, good alternative to ADA. Regards, Tom Barr

Water flow in the planted aquarium?

Let me stick a hot pepper in the mix. What does a large water change do? Think about it in terms of gas space, aerenchyma, and how much that can hold as far as O2/Co2, current, boundary layers etc. If you did a large water change, say 7x a week, say after 1-2 hours after the lights came on...

Ozone Processor / Generator in Planted Tanks

UV maybe, but not O3. I've used O3 in marine systems, I suppose it could be used some in FW....but there's not much real need, or usage. UV better suits the issues of killing things in the water as it passes through. Regards, Tom Barr

Water flow in the planted aquarium?

I've looked at ADA's flow and store front displays etc for some time and modified things to enhance things. I want good flow, but not plants being blasted around either, same for fish for the most part. The goal here is to have good low pressure, but high volume flow like we see in natural...

    Pearling with High Turnover?

I get a lot of pearling even at 15X turn over per hour. But I have high light and fast growth, that, really determines a rate of pearling, basically the faster the rates of plant growth, the faster they will pearl and give off O2. Plants give off O2 out of their stomata which tend to be on the...

High water turnover - discuss :)

I do not think I ever told anyone to do lower flows etc in the past. I've always been a strong advocate of over filtration and higher flow rates. It's just thinking about it in the context of CO2 and mixing and reduction of flows due to the thick plant beds as they grow and fill in a tank are...
