    Deep study on Peat

Sounds like the same precedents with water right laws here in the USA as well. Lawyers make out great on those issues. I try hard to conjure up win-wins for all the groups, otherwise forget it. Land value increases, they always like that, more and better use of the water and quality, they all...

    Deep study on Peat

Calling out the policies of countries, the products and particularly shaming the products and companies that sell and market such products is a wise approach. The USA? We are great at one export: Weapons. Pretty shameful. Hopefully the nations can can learn from the past rather than using...

    Deep study on Peat

I could do this for my 70 Gallon Buce tank for the emergent parts, they do well here outdoors. But I'm more aquatics and then Bonsai or natives type of Green thumb. We have an excellent carnivorous plant shop about an hour's drive from here. I've kept and had several species and done well, but...

    Deep study on Peat

Yep, agreed, both in the EU, Asia and NA, as well as the tropical regions. I refuse to support any food made with Palm oil, this is what happens to most illegal logging land afterwards. If not that, then small scale gold mining, or open air iron ore mining etc. This is well documented, but...

    Deep study on Peat

I was ready to give the guy my wallet. I felt like I was actually there in the photos, which are massive 2-3 meter prints! I know how the wetlands feel, since you are right there in them at his studio. It's like beign at Ansel's studio right there in Valley of Yosemite National Park. You can...

Cover or not to cover? CO2 on the surface....

I use lids for reducing humidity in the winter when the lights are off. Saves some energy in heating the tanks and less mold build up in the home.

    Deep study on Peat

In general, there is scant research done for Tropical wetlands, rivers and lakes. Less for soils. Some, but not that much compared to the US or Europe. We have the everglades in the USA, which is a subtropical fen. A lot of research is done in the state of Florida for this reason, but also with...

    Low tech questions?

So wait, you want a low tech non CO2 tank, but you have Nuke powered light, want water changes and high tech stuff??? I hope the plants are mostly emergent.

    Low tech questions?

Darrel, I've known a wide array of hobbyists types, from the "hands off type", to "the meddler". If they avoided the water change, had a few simple rules followered, they did well with Carpet plants also. I'm talking a nice HC rug. The Hobbyists? One of them was Diana Walstad. While I might...

    Low tech questions?

I think your personality and the location of the tank seem to be the problem, not the method:) You want something to mess with, that's the problem. You cannot leave it be. I have some tanks like this. I redo them if so. The low tech tanks I liked the best I have out in the garage ....or have...

    Low tech questions?

DSM work well for carpeting plants for Non CO2 methods. But do not add a lot of stem plants, try to minimize the no# of species, keep the design more along the lines of an iwagumi style etc, much more open. If you want a more jungle like feel; then you might want to try a different method and...

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience Well maybe it's a CO2 stability issue, maybe not. Maybe it's just the 1st 30 min or 120 minutes that are important for CO2 and the rest of the day be over a wider range. Maybe adjusting the light slowly is a better way, maybe it's...

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience Spores can be asexual also, there is often no need to complete the entire life cycle for such pest, aquatic weeds spread mainly via asexual propagation. Sheath's text is good for general stuff on Audouinella. Generally found in...

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience Well, some use both methods, and rather than seeking cause, they seek to falsify what they can test. This seems to work with a higher degree of certainty and within the hobby fairly well. Searching for the cause itself...........may...

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience Overstocked tanks of any type have lots of issues, the algae is likely more helpful in that example  With CO2 enrichment, it's added for a few reasons: mostly to prevent CO2 competition and differences in uptake between plant...

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience And these add hydroxide alkalinity (as opposed to carbonate alkalinity, making those pH/KH charts messy and well, not particularly useful). PO4 also can affect alkalinity. Often times they do lime softening where they raise the pH...

How do you stop BBA with no CO2

This is not really a non CO2, rather the system is still carbon enriched, and adding good consistent Excel Easy carb DIY will help, I agree with snails and shrimp and SAE's. They will all put a world of hurt on BBA. You can add say 10mls per 10 Gal of the Excel daily and do water changes etc...

Soil substrate, nutrient dosing, and CO2?

Haha, I laugh at stuff like this though, I tease folks ( a lot)) but you'd never know it on line, most think I'm this mean old crotchey man:0 They are often surprised when they meet me. Then it makes much more sense. Do not worry, you are a good hobbyists in my book regardless of what is said...

Soil substrate, nutrient dosing, and CO2?

I use soil of many types, but I do not think I'm irrational about them:) ADA As is soil also, so is rice paddy soil and delta clay where many species live, and the clays of Everglades, or the clays in irrigation canals that are loaded with aquatic weeds, or the various peat clays on the upper...

    EI and discus.

Many folks never noticed any issues with fish, breeding, shrimp etc when they overdosed......... Just do a few water changes ot reduce things back to normal. Auto dosing pumps often get set improperly........and lead to such errors.

    RO & CO2

Plants will adapt to various CO2 levels. Say 0-3ppm range. and say 30-50ppm range etc. Even middle ranges, say 15-20ppm. Once cannot pull out light intensity independently, they ar elinked and this is BASIC stuff here, photosynthesis equation etc. Light + CO2 + water(we got plenty of that)=...

    Naturally add co2?

Now suggesting that high CO2 is not natural, I can assure you, Easy Carbo Excel is not found in nature!!!! It's highly toxic as well. But for some reason, people seem willing to dose this. This is not just you, it's most aquarist. I do not understand this contradiction. CO2 and Excel/Easy Carbo...

    Naturally add co2?

You might try both methods and then see what you prefer for a given goal. This "goal" is 100% yours, it is not mine, or anyone else. If you see a tank you like, do that. There are many locations in nature where CO2 is high, 30ppm etc, Bonita springs, in the Mato Grosso Brasil, perhaps 100 or...

    Low tech - no waterchanges?

    Low tech - no waterchanges?

http://www.barrreport.com/showthread.ph ... O2-methods Lengthy thread using water column dosing 1x a week, maybe 2-3 x a month etc. Specific for no water changes and non CO2 methods. I would suggest a mix of this plus sediment based ferts like soils, worm casting, ADA As etc. Example of the...

Cani dose 1 weeks EI dosing at the start of the week????

I think most have much better results dosing 2-3x a week if they use CO2. Non CO2 works very well however with 2-4x a month dosing at about 6-10X less the EI amounts. You can do daily also. Dosing is not hard, you feed the fish daily or not? Same type of thing there. Fish can go a long time...

    Change from High to Low

Well, you have issues with CO2, not nutrients. You can fix the symptom by reducing the light, or fix the CO2. If you want better plant growth, more CO2, not more light is ther way to go, so either way with the light, yuo need to work more with CO2, stay on top of that. Stop messing with...

'prepping' ADA aquasoil for no water changes

Might try a DSM for the low lech non CO2 method. Also, you could do the normal routine for water changes, and use Excel, then once things are grown in, say 8-12 weeks etc, slowly ease off the Excel and go full no Carbon enrichment and reduce the water changes down to zero. Those are two...
