Algae IS taking over and I'm at the end of my knowledge

Hi Angel Great to hear your tank is sorted out - well done! I'm sorry to hear you've had so much conflicting advice, but ultimately you've sifted the wheat from the chaff (mine was probably chaff!) and got on top of things. If UKAPS has been extra helpful to you, how about rewarding us with a...

Algae IS taking over and I'm at the end of my knowledge

Hi Angel I'm NOT the person to be taking any advice from, as I'm only three weeks into my first-ever aquarium, and struggling with it. But FWIW, when I read this thread, two things surprised me. One, you're only doing 20-30% water changes once-weekly. I'd have expected to see more like 50%...

has anyone read this? (sears-conlin article on algae)

I'm interested in the dubious idea that there are two conflicting camps - high tech and low tech. As a complete newbie to aquaria (I've just started my first ever tank) I did my research and realised I simply couldn't know what approach would suit me until I got stuck in. Unsurprisingly...

Green water in tank with filter being cycled

Thanks, George - the scope for fretting seems endless. I'm not facing a learning curve - more a learning cliff!

Green water in tank with filter being cycled

OK, here's a shaky image of the tank this evening. The background is white card. Is this green water, or just a greenish cast caused by light reflecting off the plants?

Green water in tank with filter being cycled

Thanks, Spidey - I'll certainly get a picture up this evening. I just thought there might be something more precise than that. After all, I see the name "green water", look in my tank and see, well, green water! :D

Green water in tank with filter being cycled

Thanks both. I don't want to do the willow branch method, as I've only just planted up the tank and don't want to disturb anything by hoiking rooted willow branches out of the substrate after just a few days. And I don't want to spend on a UV unit in case I've completely misdiagnosed the green...

Green water in tank with filter being cycled

Hi all, I've got green water (not cloudy, just decidedly green-tinged) in my VERY young set-up - just three days old (journal here). Tank specifications - 100x45x55cms high - heavily planted from outset into Aquasoil Lighting - T5 2x24w, on for 6 hours, raised high, probably 20 inches above...

    Algae are nutrient scavengers

+1 - on all counts!
