Water change 50% net or gross ?

Yeah pre-Sumerian era here too, and am in the middle of cycling so have transported over 600 litres this weekend by bucket. I'm somehow scared of the tech (and the tightly coiled green tubing) and transporting it through the house and up the garden. Tried a pump and it flipped off the glass and...

Transition to new scape (270L oddn0ise)

The algae is now in clumps, and easier to pick out, it's still attached to the outer edges of the Anubias leaves, does it ever die off and completely detach from the leaves?

    Tank seal decay

Have gone for the bodge just help out the sealant that is thinning a little, but in 2 more years it will definitely be time for a new tank. Have made a first time trip to Aquariums Gardens and was blown away, excellent set-up and service and am now about to do my final scape, and so far, taking...

    Tank seal decay

Was hoping to try silicon on silicon and hope for the best. It's the getting it cleaned up that will be the trickiest part. Any suggestions?

    Tank seal decay

Patch for now, as I think it's all OK, next time around it will be a new opti-white tank, opti-white wasn't used that much then, and yes it does have a few 'painful' scratches.

    Tank seal decay

You're right, one more scape and then it time for a new one. It's in a fireplace and behind paneling so a new tank will be a slightly more complicated job...

Considering a rescape - what are the best practices?

Am following this and just wanted to know how things are going. Am about to start my 2/3 week re-scape process too.

    Tank seal decay

My tank is heading towards its 20th year and am starting to get nervous about the seals going. One area on the front face has decayed, there's algae on it and the sealant has worn thin, its just in a small area 4 cm in length and the decay is to about half of the depth of the sealant. Anyone...

OK thanks very much Darrel, will give that a go, as I'm definitely leaning towards keeping the anubias at least

Transition to new scape (270L oddn0ise)

Haven't been around for a few years but am now planning to start a new scape. This is the previous set-up and it's been very low maintenance for a couple of years now, so there's been a build up of Black Beard Algae as I discarded the CO2 injection. What's the opinion on moving plants from an...

When assassins need to be assassinated

When assassins need to be assassinated

My assassin snails have done a great job, and have extinguished the nasty snail infestation I had. But they've got on so well they've now breed and I have hundreds of small assassins snails, if anyone would like some, or have some Crypts to swap for them, let me know. Can send 10 small ones at...

    Help, Help, Help!

Large water change and things seems stable now. Have dropped the water level and left things for the night. It looks like I had opened the CO2 valve too much and it's been on all day. The Corys seem OK though. Thanks for the help

    Help, Help, Help!

changed a little of the media and cleaned it out. I only changed about 20% of the water, yesterday. I can only think it's got something to do with the gas. Could have possibly been on all night, and just wondering whether the canister is actually filled with CO2?

    Help, Help, Help!

Hi, Have just come home to a tank full of dead fish. Glowlights and Kitty Tetras all dead. Have just lifted 3 Corydoras out and after floating up side down for a while have now moved to the bottom of a bucket of fresh water. My red shrimp all seem OK, there are now no snails on the glass, and...

    Bushy plant suggestions

Hi UKAPS, my tank is settling down now after a growth stint of algae, and snails. But the plants are now settling down and taking shape, the crypts are waking up and it's been the shift to a spray bar that has helped things along. I'd like to grow a nice plant to fill out the back left and...

    is the flow right?

Hi Keith, things are settling down nicely and I'll look to try a spray bar soon. Cheers
  21. oddn0ise

    is the flow right?

OK spray bar is an option, just have not used one for a long time. Inlet is bottom right beneath the outlet. The main question is: is having the flow from the filter flowing into the wood a good or a bad thing. So still a high turn-over of the water just not that much movement/flow through the...
  22. oddn0ise

    is the flow right?

Hi, have placed the wood exactly in the right position, visually, but the flow from the filter is aiming at the wood. Should flow be quite strong, through the tank or does it help plants and CO2 to restrain the flow? There's plenty of it, but, it's not flowing through the tank. Any thoughts...

    The art of patience...

I’ve started work on a new 270L scape, my first for a few years, and I can’t wait to point out the need for patience… as it is so critical. I like to get the water in and filter running as quickly as possible in a new scape but this urge to fill quickly makes planting especially fine grass like...

    Plague of snails!!!

Assasins worked for me too, put six into my 270l and they keep the pesky snails under control. I think the heat has done some damage to them as well, since the hot weather I've definitely got less. And I've not seen any damage to my shrimp population either.

    Sudden appearance of parasites

The first time I'd noticed them was on a dead Cory, then within a day I had about 30 dotted around on the glass (light grey, about 2-3mm long and moving in S shape on glass) since then have not seen them on the glass but will check with the magnifying glass tonight.

    Sudden appearance of parasites

Thanks for all the input. Have seen very little of the Planaria of late as I've taken to cleaning, or at least brushing the plants and substrate to move any detritus. You can also bait for them with a prawn, just put it in at lights out and about an hour later collect it, it will be covered in...

    Sudden appearance of parasites

Thanks for the comments so far, would like to get rid of them as they are quite an eye sore. Are the treatments mentioned above 'No Planaria' etc toxic to fish/shrimps or will upset the balance in my tank?

    Sudden appearance of parasites

After a major 50% water change yesterday, I found one of my Corydoras today, dead. I checked him out with my magnifying glass (one of my best purchases) and there were three parasites on him. About 4mm long and just under 1mm wide, worm like with a slight head shape, can anyone help with...

    Is Purigen safe?

Great! Here goes... going in the filter now... looking forward to cleaner water. And I believe I can rinse it in bleach to regenerate it, sounds a little worrying using bleach but is that the case?

    Is Purigen safe?

I noticed a lot of aquascapers in competitons using Purigen to clean the water. Is it safe to go in an existing tank to clear the water or will it effect other things? Any advice would be appreciated but I drop a sachet into my filter.

How much time do people spend actually watching their tanks?

Re: How much time do people spend actually watching their ta I probably spend more time working on it than looking at it, but enjoy both. Have just bought a magnifying glass and this is proving very popular with the kids, would recommend it. They're now really into checking out the shrimps.

Creating a new aquascape in existing tank

Creating a new aquascape in existing tank

Hi Paul, I'm far from a guru but have just gone through exactly the same scenario at the start of September. Gutted my 10 year old tank and started again.
