    Inline heater + CO2 Atomizer

Personally I've used CO2 for so long I haven't got any comparisons :)
  2. nry

    Inline heater + CO2 Atomizer

That's some markup on the AE one! I just got the eBay one and it took about 4 weeks to turn up...much cheaper though. I have a Hydor and Boyu inline at present, no issues at all. The internals of the Hydor are smooth, I'd not worry about any air being trapped, not sure it's even possible :)

Branded White Filter Pads vs The sheets of filter stuff

The white pads tend to be a floss/wool medium - once clogged they don't seem, to me, to take as nicely to cleaning as they're not as firm so they break up, the sheets are easily as good as the higher priced shaped pads, and as you say - much cheaper!

    Lily pipe query

I'm darned if I can find them now, but I recently saw (online) inlet and outlet pipework with no loop, you had to run the flexible tubing into the tank a little - these would fit into any type of tank/hood combination. I'll keep looking :)

    Struggling with heating my nano!

Running one of the Hydors will work fine, the main 'issue' with an over-powered heater is if it sticks on, it will raise the tank temp too high much quicker than a lower powered one.

This might sound daft but...how to clean a filter?

In recent months I stopped using the floss based on a few threads on here, can't say I noticed any difference in water clarity. Might keep that up. Flow rate wise, I also have a Koralia on with the CO2 so it makes it a little more difficult to monitor plant swaying :)

This might sound daft but...how to clean a filter?

Not easy to judge flow rate, or at least I don't find it too easy :)

This might sound daft but...how to clean a filter?

I have a TetraTec EX600 - it has baskets containing: Base - ceramic rings topped with sponge Middle - Tetra Bioballs Top - more sponge topped with filter floss I don't use carbon. Generally all I've ever done, approx. every 4 weeks, is take the filter away from the tank, gently squeeze the...

    Filter cleaning

I am wondering if I need to be harsher when cleaning out my filter (TetraTec EX600)? Every 4-5 weeks it gets opened, I replace the thin polywool layer with new polywool and do nothing else beyond swill some old tank water around in the filter, drain, then refill with old tank water. Should I...

hydor inline heater question, semi urgent...

I recently saw some ribbed external/smooth internal filter piping at my LFS - I did debate buying some at a future date...shame it was black, but it most certainly would not kink!

Another furrowed brow in this business we call flow!

Could you add an inline pump instead? You may as well buy a more powerful filter though... http://www.force4.co.uk/848/Rule--iL280 ... ign=pid848

Leaking TetraTec, not anymore, chances of 'fixed'?

Don't think it was the o-ring seal, it was never touched or moved at any point but it's still not leaking so looks like I'll end up with a spare filter!
  20. nry

Leaking TetraTec, not anymore, chances of 'fixed'?

Cleaned my filter out last night and this afternoon I noticed it was leaking slightly, a little pool of water in the base of the cabinet and a little bit of wet carpet - filter was dripping slowly from what I can only assume was either the motorhead or the pipe connector. I stripped and cleaned...

  23. nry

    I give up on Glass

Unless I put my lily pipe half way in/out of the water I didn't get anything at all either, they're not designed to give much really. In the end the Koralia I just added has been the best thing to improve surface movement to reduce/remove the film build up I have nearly always had.

  25. nry

Reducing the flow rate of a Koralia?

Is there any way of reducing the flow rate of a Koralia (Nano Evo 900 in this case)? It is very powerful and I'd say is a touch overkill for my 60cmx30x30 tank. Are there any things along the lines of inline resistors or equivalent that would let me turn it down a touch?

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

Made it a bit better by trimming the internal tube on the housing that the end of the prop shaft sits into when you clip the housing on, but ordered a Koralia Evo Nano for £22 new via eBay so hopefully that will be nice and quiet :)

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

I'll have a go this weekend though I don't know if I have any airline, might be some CO2 tubing left if I hunt around in the 'cupboard' under the stairs :)
  32. nry

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

Something about putting a short bit of airline on the impeller shaft to reduce vibration - not taken the Resun apart to see if there is space though.
  33. nry

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

I can see me replacing it unless the airline trick works, if we've not got the TV on etc. then it is very noticeable.

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

I got the Resun 2000 in the tank last night, and yeah, huge improvement in flow, but it is rather noisy. It gives off quite a vibration, which in the living room is a touch distracting. I've seen others here mention the Koralia can be a bit noisy and that a short bit of airline hose on the...

Internal pump on with CO2 or all the time?

My eBay Resun pump has finally turned up :) Do I set it up on the same timer as the CO2 solenoid so it is on with CO2 only, ot have it on all the time? It came with a foreign plug - am I safe to cut this off and wire on a normal 3-pin plug, or must I use an adapter?

Got one of the Resun's on order from eBay, can't argue at £9.50 delivered from HK who I've used before! What am I aiming for with flow? Last night I submerged the lily pipe as opposed to having it partly above the water level, I suspect this in itself would increase flow, and it is still...

    Whick Koralia for 15UKG/algae?

I'm beginning to assume the marginal algae issues in my 15UKG tank (60x30x30) are down to poor flow. AquaMagic, a lily pipe is a lily pipe! I broke one of mine last year and was very glad they weren't the much more expensive Cal Aqua ones! AquaMagic and others do nano-suitable lily pipes, but the normal 12/13mm ones are fine for a 30cm cube, had mine in mine for a while at one point. Just...

Mine is cracking. Massive media capacity and don't forget the LPH reading will be around half the quoted figures once it is full of media. Given you can adjust the flow rate then it'll be fine. I had mine running on a 30cm cube whilst I re-scaped my 54-litre and it was fine.

    Plastic Lily Pipes

Has no-one come up with some well made acrylic versions of these yet? Is there a reason for not using acrylic as to me it seems a stronger and cheaper alternative to glass ones?
  55. nry

    Hose Length

Some slack is good - when you pull the filter out to clean it you have enough length on the pipework so things don't snag or pull even tighter. I have a good few loops in my tubing for this reason alone, alongside the fact that loops prevent kinks too :)

Filter - how long off before problems?

Our electricity is off today from 8:30am this morning through until 4pm this afternoon. I borrowed a whacking great UPS from work which keeps a 700w server running for 20 minutes and I figured this would run my teeny 10w TetraTec EX600 for most of the power-off period - it seems this may not...

Cleaning brush for 13mm lily pipes?

I bought a cleaning brush from AE thinking it would do for my 13mm lily pipes but it isn't flexible enough at the brush end for me to even debate risking the glassware. It's more for cleaning filter piping it seems. Are there any 'cheap' brushes for cleaning the lily pipes or are there other...

    Cleaning of Filter Media

I'm inclined to agree unless someone can say definitively otherwise. I'd not bother with old tank water for a new tank but I would use old filter media to start a new filter off. Old tank water for washing filter media is pretty much the same as using dechlorinated water - you don't want to...

Cheap Lily Pipes / Lily Pipes for a Fluval 105

What size is the tubing on the filter? That dictates the lily pipe diameter to go for... eBay has some cheap ones which I got a year or so ago: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aquarium-Inflow-O ... 240%3A1318 £25 delivered for 13mm pipes.
  64. nry

    What External filter???

I have some eBay 13mm lily pipes with a TetraTec EX600 and they're fine. Turnover/flow rate is very good though mine was knackered by using a Jaqno external reactor which is hopefully coming out soon. The EX600 is a perfect size for a ~60litre tank if you ask me.
  65. nry

    swapping filters over

Stuff the filter media from the internal into the external. You'll need to remove some of the external's media but you'll maintain exactly the same amount of bacteria etc so little to no difference in anything! Slowly swap in the filter media shaped for the external every few weeks.

    Cloudy Water

May or not be relevant, but sometimes the chelater (so I am told) in some liquid plant fertilisers (and that sometimes in powdered trace mixes) can cause cloudy water. I had this with SeaChem and the AE mix, switching to Tropica Plant Nutrition (which is said to have a better chelater) has...

Lily pipe outlet - placement r.e. waterline

I'm on 30ppm already, don't fancy notching it up any further, though I am looking to ditch the Jaqno, no more efficient than a Rhinox diffuser and a great deal more annoying when the filter gets a clean out.
  68. nry

Lily pipe outlet - placement r.e. waterline

I've found that unless I have my lily pipe outlet breaking the waterline significantly I still get a build up of surface scum (like that which hangs around lampposts at night but easier to get rid of) - moving it beneath the surface does give a vortex but this doesn't help much to clear the...
