Having a discussion on a discus forum and the general consensus seems o be that brown algae is caused by high phosphates. Is this correct? My phosphates are usually sky high but I never experience brown algae!
im no expert but what is your filtration like? is it pressurised co2 that your injecting? (not a DIY yeast mix) and how are you injecting it (inline diffuser, standard diffuser) it sounds to me like the co2 is not reaching the bottom of your tank.
Im not experienced in pirahna keeping so I cant comment on that but as for the lighting. I would reduce the period back to what you had it at (at least if not more) and if its possible raise the height a bit and then monitor for a week or two.
Did you have algae issues before you increased it? And how long are they running for now. I found that 2 t5s even just for 6 hours a day was a bit much and I had to raise mine a fair bit to get a good balance
You say youve changed the duration of the lighting? Have you increased it I take it? What bulbs are you using t5 or t8? Four bulbs (320w) seems an incredable amount for a four foot!!! On my old 4ft 285l co2 injected tank I only needed 2 54w bulbs running.
Size of tank?
Are you dosing ferts?
Lighting period?
Injecting co2?
Type of lighting?
And how long has tank been running?
With the answers to these questions we can help you out. However, most of the time youll find algae is simply the cause of too much light.
I had this problem in a fluval edge i used to own. It was all down to water changes. As its been said a couple of 50pc changes a week and youll see an improvement.
can a small amount of unscented bleach not be used? i cleaned out a 100l barrel with a solution of 1/10 before using it for water changes for my discus tank without problems.
Re: blimey is this gunk on my wood?
Im at the same stage as you and ive been told the same. Meanwhile ibe been scrubbing it with a toothbrush and continued with regular water changes.
