    Eheim auto feeder?

EKOMIXO Get one of these fish feeders, they have an airline connection that blows air through the food to keep it dry. Mine air runs 22:45 till 2am and every type of food is fine, no clumping and stays dry all the time.

    Co2

Seachem Excel is a polymerised version of gluteraldehyde that is supposedly less toxic due to it breaking down slower than neat gluteraldehyde. Both CO2 tablets and gluteraldehyde are really in the end very poor sources of CO2, providing only a couple of ppm (parts per million) above naturally...

    Help moving tank and fishes

That's what I have done. The bags stops the water sloshing around during transport. Just leave a large air space above each bag. I wedged the buckets in the footwell of the car, covered buckets with old bed sheets, to stop further sloshing and keep dirt/mess out and make it dark and drove my...

    Help moving tank and fishes

My filter and tank was left for over 3 days with no power (know was 3 days from our house alarm log), one winter, when RCD tripped due to substation neutral fault. Came back home to very cold house, tank at 15'C. Restored power and all was fine.

    Help moving tank and fishes

Only possible ammonia problem if you completely remove and put back the substrate. I would leave the plants in place, cover substrate/plants surface with cling film to prevent water loss from plants (in this weather!) and stop dirt/bits falling into tank getting into substrate. Just make sure...

    Help moving tank and fishes

Put fish in plastic bags in plastic buckets, I've used Ziploc bags in the past. Put substrate & plants in buckets or large sealable plastic boxes to make them easier to move. Transport the tank empty, wrapped in blankets or some other protection. Empty water from filter to make it easier to...

Moved Tank... Lost Almost Everything Instantly?!

Prime just says single dose will remove chlorine and chloramine. I did read, that if using ye olde, but ridiculously cheap, sodium thiosulphate method you need to double dose it. Here is sodium thiosulphate with chlorine. and reaction with chloramine, needs twice the amount. Any finally...

Moved Tank... Lost Almost Everything Instantly?!

I have seen it being reported that chloramine is being injected into UK water (instead of chlorine) due to current hot weather. Chloramine lasts longer in the water pipes, especially in hot weather, but I think this is due to possible lower water pressure and to neutralise anything that gets...

A pointed out, should add Prime to tank, then water to neutralise the chlorine/chloramine as the water is added, and filters off as well.

Moved Tank... Lost Almost Everything Instantly?!

This fish can also be affected by chorine/chloramine, it burns their gills and can asphyxiate them. The sudden loss does seem to indicate chlorine/chloramine present in fatal levels. You should always dechlorinate the water before adding to the tank.

    need advice

The best thing you can do for your fish and you is KISS. Keep it simple st*pid. Many people overcomplicate fish/plant keeping after Googling and waste an enormous amount of time & worries over things that in the end should be simple. So using tap water (and dechlorinator) is simple. Job done.

Safe Plecs for a Planted Tank

When I had plec's and plants I used to spent every other day replanting stems that had either dug up by the plec's. They also damaged the plants whilst they vacuumed around, usually punching holes in broad leafed plants.

    Holiday fish feeders

I have a Hydor fish feeder (see Ebay) which in fact I have ended up using all the time. It has an air inlet, from air pump, to keep the food dry, which in my experience is...

I think I did something really stupid....

Not really, we have ascertained that copper did not poison the original posters fish as copper pipework does not add copper to the water supply.
  31. ian_m

I think I did something really stupid....

Yes. Generally copper pipe gets coated with limescale, either naturally in the water or added by water companies, thus copper (and lead pipe if you still have it) is immune to being attacked, due to the coating. However this is not the case with some brasses, which will be attacked, zinc being...

I think I did something really stupid....

No the guy was confusing chloramine with ammonia. Scottish water injected chloramine into the water supply to sterilise the water/pipes after a burst pipe, this is very common all around the world (including the Netherlands) if there is ever any chance of contamination of the water during water...
  33. ian_m

I think I did something really stupid....

Generally this is nothing to do with copper pipes, occurs with plastic piping as well, but is due to dezincifcation of the "non water board compliant" parts in the brass in taps (or other fittings). This is seen on very old taps as well as more modern Chinese cheap taps (and fittings), the hot...

I think I did something really stupid....

The problem is, when there is ever a water supply issue and emergency chlorine & chloramine is added to the water, you won't know until all your fish die and all the bacteria in your filters die. Thus, in most first world countries, you should always use dechlorinator. If you know your water...

I think I did something really stupid....

Yes but I think largely an old wives tale. Copper pipe is attacked by hot soft low pH water, but my "Copper Tube in Domestic Water Services Design and Installation" book states that there are no UK companies that supply water that will attack copper as the water is treated to remove acidity...

Not too sure about temperature drop, I used to fill straight from cold tap via hose, tank used to drop to 15-18C, no fish problems. In fact most of the fish seemed to like to swim in the incoming cold water. BUT what I did do is always 100% without fail, was dose the tank with dechlorinator...

Will Otos do well in my tank?

Don't see any issue with your setup. I got 6 in early 2012, three left now. Not fed explicitly their own food, but do eat algae wafers and left over food from rest of fish. In my experience they are not an algae cleaning up crew, they ignore BBA and all types of green algae. They do spend a lot...

Went RO, lost tens of Cories

Couple of things spring to mind... 1. If you are using rain water, you have run off contamination somewhere. Read that rain water from a "felt" roof (or even the roofing felt under tiles dipping into the gutter) can cause fish fatal contamination. 2. I assume you have an RO pre-filter to remove...

    Clown loach deaths ?

Did rinse the coarse foam in both filters in tank water as I would normally do each week, to remove coarse muck and odd leaves. Didn't notice other fish having issues. Clown loach deaths ?

Water change, with dechlorinator, before first death was the Saturday. Water change on Sunday had dechlorinator, so hopefully not a chlorine issue. All other fish appear OK. Plecos in planted aquaria

    Bad experience with new fish
