Help needed retrofitting LED to Fluval Roma 240L

I cut my Juwel lighting unit open after it stopped working. Reason was it had water in it after previous owner had left one end in water. I got it open, got it dried out and it worked again. However I was never able to 100% reseal it again, as the original units are plastic welded shut. Best I...

    Swapping T5 to LED

Retro fit LED tubes are designed for magnetic ballasted fluorescent tube fixtures, rather than electronic ballasts. If you have electronic ballasts you will have to rewire the tube connections. Using BICPenCad, above are "tube" wiring diagrams. 1. Is conventional magnetic ballast (B) with...

    Raising height of light

Yes you can get LED drivers than take a 0-10V input, from a potentiometer to control the brightness. Some LED drivers have an inbuilt potentiometer, you twiddle with a screwdriver, to set the brighness.

    Raising height of light

Rather than raise the LEDs Put either darkened plastic sheet in front of LED's. Strips of foil across the LED's to say block 1/3 of them. Get a dimmable LED supply ?

moving from T5's / T8's to LED - retro fit or other?

Be careful about retro fitting LED tubes in place of fluorescent tubes. Most retro fit LED tubes are designed to be retro fitted to tube holders with magnetic tube ballasts, most aquatic ballasts are the considerably more efficient electronic (Juwel certainly is electronic) and retro LED tubes...

    Juwel Rio - Lighting Options

I have the iQuatics 4 tube unit on my Vision 180. I bought it with 4 off of their tropical tubes in 2016. I thought tank looked "pinkish" so I replaced two of the tubes with 2 off Juwel HiLite day tubes, these being more white (8000K). Addition of these tubes certainly makes the green of the...

Have you got reflectors, that increases the light level significantly. Juwel T5 unit vs multilux LED unit

Why are you replacing tubes ? Bet it is because the manufacturer says so, as opposed to tubes losing lumens ? T5 tubes generally maintain greater than 80-90% lumen output after 5 years. You will generally get more as hopefully your lights are only on 6-8 hours a day. My T5 tubes are from late...

Lighting suggestions for Juwel Vision 180

I very much doubt you will find any other lights that fit this tank, the light unit looks very specific for this type of tank. May be able to bodge/DIY something with LED strips or LED spots, certainly not fluorescent tubes (or equivalent LEDs') as even the smallest tube is too big for this...

    T5 question: 3100lm @4000K vs. 2850lm @6500K

Plants won't care what spectrum/temperature light they get. However a planted tank with 10K+ tubes will look washed out, plants look "bleached" and not very green. This is why people mix say 8K and say 6.5K and even 4K, as these lower temperatures will make the plants look stand out green to...
  27. ian_m

    T5 question: 3100lm @4000K vs. 2850lm @6500K

That's a lot of light, what size is your tank ? This will help you decide what light level your tank will be running at. High light means CO2, ferts, weekly water changes, daily plant pruning etc.
  28. ian_m

    T5 question: 3100lm @4000K vs. 2850lm @6500K

Plants use light and don't really care too much about colour temperature. Your eyes care more than plants do. Choose tubes to make your plants (and fish) look good. Too lower colour temp and plants look dull & yellow and not bright (4000K and below maybe), too higher temperature and plants...

Arcadia T8 LED replacements : Ballast running hot

Here is what is in a magnetic ballast and the associated wiring looks like. The ballast is just a coil of wire on a laminated iron core (may have an over temperature sensor in case of fault). Best lighting for plants

I would think with 2 x 24W T5 tubes, especially with reflectors you will have enough light to grow almost any plant. Juwel T5 tube manufacturer

What do you mean lower quality ? My iQuatics tubes are from Jan 2016 and are still fine. I know this as I recently had a Juwel tube fail, so I played "musical tubes" and there was virtually no difference in brightness between the old tubes and brand new unused tubes.
  42. ian_m

    Juwel T5 tube manufacturer

There are 3 or 4 manufacturers or Juwel length tubes, Juwel, Arcadia, Geiselman and iQuatics. The reason they are custom lengths is due to the limited tank volumes you would get using industry standard length tubes, especially in smaller volumes under 300-400 litre. All to do with ratio of...

    marine LED for tropical tank.

With too higher Kelvin temperature, for me anything above 8000K, as mentioned above, the plants (and fish) look white and washed out. You will get a much better looking tank with more "punchy" colours by using lower colour temperature lights. I personally have a 8000K T5 HO tube, that...

What type of lighting should I go with

If you don't intend to use CO2, then you really should be looking at only a single T5 HO tube at absolute maximum, even a single tube might be too bright. Use this graph, to estimate rough light levels and if not using CO2 keep it in the low light region. Thus for a single T5 tube (and no...

    Help on lighting

The 54W T5 tubes, especially with reflectors, will well and truly place you in very very high light region, in which you will be able to grow anything. At the same time if your fertz, CO2 injection, CO2 flow are not spot on, you will be in the "convert all your plants to algae" region.

    Lighting vs Filtering

Sounds like too much light reduction. You do need to be able to see fish and plants when lights are on. Personally I would try with no foil light reducers, as you haven't got proper reflectors so light is likely lowish. Liquid carbon is unaffected by agitation/air stones so go ahead and aerate...

    Lighting vs Filtering

Yet another reason why the plants are suffering, you must feed them, especially at the light levels you have. If you aren't or can't move to bottled CO2, then your best bet will be to try running with only one T5 tube, that is normally bright enough (actually maybe too bright) to grow most...

    Questions on photo period

The CO2 two hours before lights on is the required time to infuse CO2 to 30ppm level in the water, so that when lights come on the CO2 level is steady. Varying CO2 levels during light period due to poor CO2 management is the start of poor plant health and algae making an appearance. See here...

20 inch @ 1200 lumens is roughly equivalent to 22" T5 tube @ 1220 lumens. http://www.arcadia-aquatic.com/product/freshwater-lamp/ Thus for 18" tank, you are probably in the medium light region if it is a known make of LED light. If from China it will be low light due to the probably overstated...

Can anyone recommend a light for 120 cm hightech tank

As stated by the tube manufacturers... My T5 tubes are over 4 years old and show no sign of reduced light output. See here for 6month and 30month tube side by side. In fact 2 1/2 years later the one on the right is still going. The left one failed due to "being attacked" by surfacing plants...

The Juwel HeliaLux LED 800 - 28 Watt fits the Juwel Rio 125. Job done. Make sure you get the controller or else you will be melting your plants and farming algae.

Lightning questions for a new setup!

A pH controller measures absolute pH levels not pH change as would be required to observe a 1 pH drop giving approximately 30ppm CO2. As your pH will vary as the tank water "gets dirty" & ages, as well as if you have just done a water change, you will need to set your pH controller every day to...

Lightning questions for a new setup!

A pH controller is the first step to having something else to blame for poor CO2. A pH controller doesn't help get decent diffusion and distribution, in fact will probably lead to plant melting and algae farming far quicker than than if controlling CO2 manually. So no to pH controller.

    Led lights for red plants

Like this from Zeus's monster tank. In fact he has two CO2 injectors (and DIY PLC controller) to get enough CO2 in. Picture from this post https://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/olympus-is-calling-twin-co2-reactors-fitted.43046/page-3#post-475073

    Led lights for red plants

Yes lights like these produce the most growth per penny of electricity, red growth by the ton and more carpet plant than you will ever see. Spot the issue though....
