    Nitrate level

This just shows you why you should never take into account your water parameters when working out ferts dosing levels. I have seen this many many times on this forum, peeps complaining the plants are suffering and you find out they are not dosing EI levels, but some funny version of dosing...

Stunted plants in Hard water ?

Yes it's an illusion, you are starting down the rabbit hole of wasting your time and money on something that is not really important. Most plants and fish don't really care about water hardness. Plants make use of what they have available. I would suggest poor CO2 levels and CO2 distribution in...

Does anyone have an indoor carnivorous plant garden?

Worth a visit on their open days, it you are in this area of the country. They have regular open days. I went round with hands in pockets, so I didn't touch/prod anything I shouldn't and to stop my wallet escaping and emptying...:D Carnivorous Plants | Venus Fly Traps - Hantsflytrap

    Storing potted plants

My original pot of HC arrived well before I was ready, so I stored it on my windowsill at work, with my desk lamp pointing at it, during the time I was there. Algae, poor growth, drama

Any magnesium dosing. EI required MgSO4, you are not dosing EI. May not be the issue but in 100% of cases where someone invents their own dosing scheme, algae and poor plants is the result.

    Nutrient deficiencies?

Generally mechanical damage to plants is a sign of poor CO2 levels and distribution, especially low down in the tank. Could of course be something having a munch, but poor CO2, for your light levels is my bet. What is your filtration rate, needs to be at least 400 gallons per hour, preferably...

Using CO2 and some plants still melting

99% of the time, algae like as in your pictures is indicative of poor CO2 levels and poor CO2 distribution. For a 60l tank you should be aiming at a filter capacity of at least 600litre/hour, preferably outputting via a suitable spray bar located across the back of the tank. Is your filter...

Whats the secret to keeping Red plants Red ?

Here is another red plant I keep, bit big for a tank. Only red for a couple of days in each year. This picture was two days ago, leaves were very dark red this morning almost black. Will all be on the ground in a couple of days.

Whats the secret to keeping Red plants Red ?

This is a picture from last night, when I noticed one end of the tank was "reddish" rather than "greenish". Tank is 180l, CO2 levels are "took ages to get right" green/yellow drop checker. Dosing x2 EI levels due to rather large plant mass. Lighting is 4 x T5 HO tubes (thus very high light)...

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

I think you missed it. The original EI research used RO water, with none or limited hardness added, so as to exclude any issues due to water supply quality. Some US sites, though do quote you don't need to add MgSO4 if using tap water, as in US hardness is often due to Mg rather than Ca. Not...

Do I need more Nitrate if tap water has enough?

I have never had problems with red plants when dosing EI. One issue to watch is the upper leaves clearly shade the lower...
  23. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

Light intensity probably. Try putting the drop checker amongst the plants that are having issues and see what it says. A pH profile using a meter is also handy in that a drop of 1pH from CO2 on till lights on as about 30ppm CO2.
  24. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

Obvious from pics, too much light for CO2 levels. Simple. Easy fix, sort CO2 levels or lower light levels. If dosing EI correctly (with weekly water changes) you will not have nutrient deficiency issues, therefore must be CO2 levels or the light levels supplied. Job done.
  25. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

As you are dosing EI I doubt it is potassium deficiency. Most plant "mechanical issues" are either fish nibbling or poor CO2. How big is your tank, how big is your filter etc. Though dosing potassium sulphate should do no harm.
  26. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

Not really. Why are you dosing potassium sulphate then ? APF's guidance is a fine start. Dose more if you have a large plant mass, dose less if less plants.
  27. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

Better to add small doses alternate daily, as the macro will react with the micro neutralising the effects of them both. Are you sure you are adding sufficient nitrate, if only dosing smaller (?) doses of potassium nitrate ? I have never heard of anyone ever really having potassium deficiency...
  28. ian_m

Is Sulphate of Potash safe to use in aquariums?

Dose both potassium sulphate and magnesium sulphate on the alternate days to the micros, as these salts are macro salts. What are you using to supply nitrate, if not dosing potassium nitrate ?
  29. ian_m

    what deficiency is this??

Does not contain potassium or magnesium, which will be required if you are using CO2 and high light. Lack of potassium will also cause curled leaves, I didn't mention before as I thought you were supplying potassium, which I now know specialised doesn't contain.
  30. ian_m

    what deficiency is this??

Lack of magnesium usually causes yellowing of leaves, similar to lack of iron. However as magnesium is mobile in the plant, unlike iron, the plant will recover once magnesium is supplied.
  31. ian_m

    what deficiency is this??

Looks like lack of calcium, could be especially as you are using RO. How are you hardening your water and what with ?

  33. ian_m

Do I need more Nitrate if tap water has enough?

No, ignore your water report. Going down that route and changing things based on somebodies water report, is the start of algae and associated tank problems. The water report is for their test point on a particular day and not your tap water today. Just keep dosing EI, no issues with excess...

    Plant deficiency help please

As Edvert says, that is way way too longer light period, especially if your CO2 is not fully sorted, especially not getting a 1pH drop. pH drops tend to under read CO2 levels (handy so as to not gas fish), so CO2 levels likely to be far far lower than expected. A drop checker can help here. As...

    Plant deficiency : Iron ? Mg ?

Any "mechanical damage" to plants, holes, tatty edges etc, is either fish munching or insufficient & poor CO2 for your light levels. What is your filtration rate ? (Filter should be at least 1600l/hr for a tank your size). How is flow distributed ?

My Green Plants Suffer From Yellowing

You need to look what of your fertilisers is adding iron and what is adding magnesium (if any). If you dose magnesium sulphate (available from garden centres, Boots and Ebay) all plants will green up as magnesium is mobile in the plant. If you dose extra iron, only new leaves will be greener...

With how much light intensity does the plant start photosynthesis?

Search the forum for "light compensation point", especially posts by CEG4048 for discussion of minimum light levels necessary for plants to start photosynthesising. It actually quite high, as seen by the human eye, before even "low light" plants start synthesising.
  42. ian_m

My Green Plants Suffer From Yellowing

I would start with 4-5 hours then slowly increase time say over next couple of weeks. 6 hours is a good time to keep plants from taking over the tank too quickly. I have 2 T5 tubes 4pm to 11pm and 4 T5 tubes 5pm to 10:30. But I spent years (?) getting CO2 spot on.

My Green Plants Suffer From Yellowing

New aquarium, plants won't grow? Help!

Low Nitrate levels can cause algae. Ignore your water report, that is for the water companies test point on a particular day, not your tap water today. So add nitrate, even in excess as this will help reduce algae, along with shorter and not so bright lights. Excess's phosphate, or even spot...
