Sorry to bump an old thread (there was a thread specifically about this rock but can't find it in new system)
I've just taken delivery of 25kg of this stuff have done the typical vinegar test and not a single bubble or fizz. I've got some sat in some RO now will leave it there a couple of...
get a shovel and a sieve goto your back garden dig a hole about 2x2x2 foot.
By time you've sieved all the soil you'll have a bag full of the pebbles/cobbles.
part one is here http://www.keepingtropicalfish.co.uk/?p=267
part 2 will hopefully be tomorrow which will cover setting up a standard tank ie: non planted for a few neons etc
part 3 will be planting the tank up on a budget.
its only a little personal site thing I just thought i'd like to write...
posted a plant list of what I've got at the moment in my previous post (I edited it while you replied :) ) I want to get it posted up first as part of my tanks on a budget mini series then I'll make a journal post here. Pretty sure it won't look too good on the budget its going on but my plan...
just sticking it at the bottom of the stairs

crypt wendtii brown x4
crypt wendtii green x3
Echinodorus harbich (I think not 100% its some kind of echinodorus just not fully sure on type 1 plant 1 small plantlet)
Cyperus Helferi...
hrmp i never thought about doing it as an island only thing in my head was i'm stuck with an internal filter which isn't bad (its an eheim aquaball) but I was thinking of using the wood to hide it by building up around the wood and putting some big leafed stems behind it and crypts around the...
For my little blog I've set myself a challenge of getting an entire tank setup and planted for less than £100 all in. To do it I've had to beg borrow scrounge and buy second hand everything.
Now I'm almost out of budget for the challenge upto £70 so far and still have plants to buy/steal but...
alot of people do it for fun though and don't like being "judged" other people who i'd consider perfectly capable of providing brilliant scapes like alistair and george don't have tanks setup at the moment either.
no planted tank setup at the moment though i'll be starting a new small one in a week or 3 but won't be anywhere near ready in time. only tank with plants in is my cutting/growing tank don't think I can really enter that as its pretty much a 2x1x1 matt of random plants :)
Re: Keep your surface clean
you use a modified marine style overflow do you not just instead of going to a sump you go through media and return straight to tank?
check the substrates you're using see if they leech ammonia if not then as soon as the waters clear you should be safe to stick fish straight back in assuming mature filters.
if they leech ammonia then you may need to leave it a couple of days but again a mature filter will speed up the...
depends alot on size of tank, substrate being used (does it leak ammonia etc or is it stable from go?) and if your using an already matured filter.
if you're using a fairly safe substrate and a matured filter you can stick your fish back in within an hour or 2 of the rescape once water is clear...
that was what me and sc were just talking about figured we'd flesh out the concept get you guys involved first in what features / design / name / layout / logo etc we wanted and then have a chat with george about it after.
hosting isn't an issue I have my own servers too its more a case of if you guys are serious about running a competition or not if you are then its worth while putting in the time to design and develop something i'm sure we've got a few designers here who can come up with some nice clean designs...
would be easy enough to setup a website allowing people to enter and upload videos+pictures etc and then allow judges to vote.
the hard part would be securing some form of sponsorship with prizes to the top 3 for example
if its limestone and I remember basic chemistry correctly you can put it in coke over night and when you ph test the coke in the morning it could be an alk or ph neutral as limestone neutralises acid
use card to separate the 2 different area's of substrate then once its all in the shape you want it remove the card and use stones to cover the join (or wood)
mines still light and fluffy after 2 months I suspect once plants get rooted into it and it gets filled with fishy poop it'll settle down but no idea nobody else seems to complain :(
give it a while unti you stick corys in though
i couldn't find an actual category winners list only the entrants pages am I being blind?
grats on the comments though guys they are nice looking tanks
