    George's One-Pot Iwagumi Challenge

Personally, I think this tank project makes for one of the more impressive threads on the whole forum! George has shown us so many things that can be done with a planted tank in a way we never thought possible! The initial challenge of using just one pot was fascinating enough but, add to that...

Water pouring down the overflow is the issue, Alistair has in fact considered a sump before, they work ok on injected tanks if you are prepared to use loads of gas! (like me)

That might not be a great idea as the overflow will drive off the little C02 available in a low tech tank!

A 'little' box of chocolates, licorice n allsorts - baby chocco fry

That looks quite unusual! It is difficult to see exactly what is happening, is that water ingressing into voids in the silicone or is the pressure pushing the panes of glass apart & deforming the silicone?

There are a lot of folk who get really negative & even rude at the mention of heating cables but in the 80s they were the norm & worked in the fact they did heat the tank & did not kill the plants! I didn't like the the exposed cable running down the corner of my tank so - I installed my cable...

Why is every one so keen to see the tank full of water! I thought the idea was to let the plants establish roots & put on a bit of fast growth? Hey Darrel, I live in Guernsey, the once tomato growing centre of the World! I managed a very big tomato vinery, with an added kio farm & tourist attraction, for many years! I must add this was in an era when organic growing was unheard of & we all worked in a haze of C02 & pesticides!!

With reference to adding additional C02, attitudes might have changed in recent years but, I can remember this subject being discussed at length on the planted tank forum & I am sure Tom was a contributor to that particular thread? Anyway it was decided that adding C02 was a total waste of time...

I dont think the heat mat would produce to much heat if the tank was full of circulating water but, I would just leave the (stupid design) connector sticking out the back & see how it goes. I use even smaller (area cover) mats & although you do get an uneven substrate heat the condensation...

I can assure you with that size mat, will make the whole tank very toasty, in fact it if your house is warm, it may be too warm! Edit .. Ian might well be right though, if the tank is slightly raised the mat might no be so efficient. I guess you have time to find out as the next step?

OK, thanks, what is the pumps flow rating? Its just that I am fascinated with your set up, you seem to just use one near surface return from the pump & a surface return to the pump but you must be achieving a complete flow pattern right down to the substrate! I notice there is plenty of room...

There is a huge amount about bubble count on the forums but, you can put this in some perspective when Tom has suggested he uses about one fire extinguishers contents every two - two & a half months. 55. foxfish

"Dutch something or the other" 120 Gal

You are right there Tom in fact not many tanks, if any, I have ever seen can compete with the exceptional plant growth. Re: Four Seasons 300L (02/03 Up Atomizer :) ) Yes, you soak them in bleach... however I dont find they work very well after about six months regardless of being cleaned. I assume they clog up at different rates due to water harness? To be honest I Just buy a new one every six months :?
