    Stream Biotope

Hi all, I like it. Have a look at <"Your tanks: Nick Ridout">. I'm <"taking some credit"> for Nick's success. I don't personally subscribe to the <"don't have any plants"> argument either. If there are riparian (Willow (Salix spp.) etc.) trees growing along a temperate stream they are as...

    Whitewater biotope feasibility ?

Hi all, They are mainly fine silt and clays. The <"rivers originate in the Andes">, which are a young mountain range, and which are being rapidly eroded. The rivers flow down slope across <"the Andes Piedmont"> and drop their load of larger sediment particles, but the fine particles only...

    Oryzias woworae biotope

Hi all, Yes, I think it is a combination of that and the light scattering effect of the calcium carbonate precipitate in the very clear water. The <"marl in the turloughs is white"> and I've seen the same effect in disused <"China Clay"> & Limestone quarries and at the <"karst spring at...

    Oryzias woworae biotope

Hi all, Yes, <"they have a specialised flora">, but it is mainly <"slow growing mosses">, <"Eleocharis etc"> and the plants are usually covered with calcium carbonate (via biogenic decalcification), so not obviously green. cheers Darrel

    Oryzias woworae biotope

Hi all, It is much photographed in winter & spring, because it is a <"marl lake (and turlough complex)"> and when most of the marl is submerged below clear water it looks otherworldly. cheers Darrel

    Oryzias woworae biotope

Hi all, It is usually where you have <"high levels of calcium carbonate"> (CaCO3) in the water. This is a <"Marl Lake in W. Ireland"> (Lough Gealain) cheers Darrel

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, I don't know but I'd probably avoid Mango (Mangifera indica), it's member of the <"Anacardiaceae">, and most of them are fairly toxic. cheers Darrel

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, I'm not a CO2 user and I don't have hard water in the tanks, but generally "hard water fish" don't do well in soft water. You can maintain soft water fish in harder water, but there life span maybe limited and they can't usually breed successfully. If you travel to either end of the...

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, I think you can keep Sailfin Mollies in full salinity. Seawater has high dGH and dKH and I'd definitely keep Mollies in hard water. Cheers Darrel

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, I really enjoyed the video, but he doesn't explain that pH is a ratio, as well as a log10 scale and it is the ratio aspect that means you can go through several orders of magnitude of pH change with very little change in actual ionic composition. This leads him to talk about rapid "pH...

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, You just need to aim for <"low conductivity water">, and then any <"addition of tannins"> will reduce the pH. From the <"FEOW link">: What you have to remember is that pH <"is never stable"> in soft vegetated water and <"that it doesn't matter">. cheers Darrel

Questions regarding biotope setup - BADC 2022

Hi all, I think microbial activity is reduced in the"black water", but nitrification doesn't stop, because we now know about s whole panoply of ammonia oxidising archaea that occur in acidic conditions. Cheers Darrel

    Project Redchin

Hi all, It looks like both @Tyko_N 's and this reference mention water lilies (Nymphaea) and N. lotus "Zenkeri" is both W. African and <"commonly available">. cheers Darrel

Hi all, Found this from <"Ghana"> cheers Darrel

Plant List for Papua New Guinea Biotopes

Hi all, Definitely is. We have a thread <"Cryptocoryne dewitii"> and there should be some biotope bits in <"Rainbowfishes ~ Their Care & Keeping in Captivity Second Edition - 2011"> A few of the plants on the list are available commercially, although they tend to be species that are very...
