    Cherry shrimp nano tank

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi all, Those that are still in the tank should be OK. Segmented worms (Annelids, earthworms and leeches) are pretty difficult to get rid off with chemicals and Fendbendazole <"Fenbendazole - Wikipedia"> has low toxicity to Annelids, Crustaceans, Molluscs and Vertebrates, which is definitely an...

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi all, They usually stop moving fairly quickly, and then retract their tentacles and a day later they are gone. Planaria take longer, but the same sort of thing happens, they stop moving and then die. You often see them pale and motionless on the glass, days after you added the Panacur. It...

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi all, You can't. I tend to ignore them unless I have fry in the tank. Panacur works really well, you can get the powder to treat Cats & Dogs pretty cheaply on ebay etc. cheers Darrel

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi all, Small Corydoras sp? <"Filter recommendations for 30l tank.">. You would need somewhere to put them afterwards. The fry of a bigger Corydoras species would also work, if you fancied Gold Laser's etc <"PlanetCatfish.com - Corydoras (lineage 7) sp. (Cw010) (Callichthyidae)...

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi all, Yes, they are California Blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus). I have them in most of my filters and in any tanks without fish <"Feeding a California Blackworm culture - Lumbriculus variegatus">. These are some of @Simon Cole's cheers Darrel

Hi all, Welcome to UKAPS. That is the one, crustacean naming is all to do with legs. It is an Isopod ("all legs the same") crustacean, just like Woodlice. Scuds (Hyalella, Gammarus, Crangonyx etc) are Amphipods ("some legs different") and shrimps are Decapods ("ten legs"). Easiest way to...

    Snail removal

Hi all, You can use sparkling <"carbonated (soda) water">, it contains <"a vast amount of CO2"> and will kill most animals. You really answered your own question, copper (Cu) isn't highly toxic to plants (at low levels), but it is to invertebrates. I'll put my card on the table straight away...

    Help with Black worm culture

Hi all, I assume they eat the plant as the leaves are shed, and the plant itself maintains water quality. There are probably better options than Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), but my "spare" cultures <"are outside in buckets"> (below), so it has to be a plant that is hardy in the UK...

Trying a Caradina CRS tank in a slightly different way

Hi all, I think that is just because they were Oak (Quercus spp.) leaves. These are very resistant to both grazing and decomposition, because they contain a lot of tannins, terpenes etc. So very good for tinting the water, but not so good as shrimp food. In studies of <"leaf decomposition in...

    Help with Black worm culture

Hi all, I don't attempt to fragment mine, I just leave them get on with it. I don't know what you are feeding them with, but I use the <"Hornwort method"> and if I want to bulk them up, a small amount of cooked veg. and / or spirulina flake. cheers Darrel

Hi all, I'm definitely leaning towards it being successful. Personally I would <"buy a conductivity meter"> (if you don't have one?) and use that reading as your prime metric. You need to <"find a datum value (range)"> initially, and you choose this by looking at shrimp and plant health, and...

Trying a Caradina CRS tank in a slightly different way

Hi all, Sound plausible. In which case @hamfist might get less effect with his soil grains not actually forming the substrate. Colour might be important. I don't ever have much sand visible in my tanks, so its colour is less important, but I could see a big expanse of shiny, white sand may...

Trying a Caradina CRS tank in a slightly different way

Hi all, That could be a slight disadvantage to using an "active" substrate. It isn't really exhausted, it is just at equilibrium with the tank water and therefore will have lost its softening effect. Because <"it is ion exchange"> an exhausted substrate would then actually harden softer water...

Trying a Caradina CRS tank in a slightly different way

Hi all, Welcome to UKAPS. That should work. If you are using RO you don't actually need a buffering substrate. You can use an inert substrate (silica sand) and just add some dead leaves etc. to provide some tannins etc. Because <"RO is a blank slate"> the only ions it contains are the ones...

    Enclosed ecosphere

Hi all, Even the <"EcoSphere"> ones, they sold sealed with <"Halocaridina rubra">, (“Opae Ula” or "Red Volcano Shrimp"), were a bit of a con, because the shrimps died slowly, they are just incredibly tough so it took them a long time to die. cheers Darrel

Hi all, That sounds right and hopefully pretty cheap? (a couple of $ a pound?) you should be able to find some that costs "chicken feed". You just need to add a little and see how long it takes to dissolve (you can put it in a net bag in the filter, or the tank, etc). If it doesn't dissolve...

    Shell attrition

Hi all, Yes, something is wrong in the measurements somewhere. The "somewhere" is the problem. They should, so either the pH is above pH 7, or they haven't been in the tank long enough for shell attrition to show. Ramshorn snails are more tolerant of softer (less alkaline) water <"than many...

    Cherry shrimp dying off

Hi all, I don't think it is H2S production either looking at the tank. I'm not a CO2 user, but an issue shrimps have is that they have <"haemocyanin"> as their oxygen / CO2 transporter and it is less efficient than haemoglobin. That is a really good point. Have a look at <"Wipe Out">, but it...

    Cherry shrimp in soft water

    Cherry shrimp in soft water

Hi all, Your biologist friend is misinformed, as soon as the pH of the water falls below pH 7 calcium carbonate (CaCO3) begins to go into solution. Snails can only build shell where the mantle covers the shell and it can't repair the older shell whorls. I get this <"a lot in my tanks">. In...
