The roots you see actually come from the anubias
Which are attached to the wood
I removed the wood and left the plants that were in the soil in place
Syphoned out as much water as possible
The substrate had minimal disturbance
But like you say it much of released excess into the water...
Hi all
I was very luckily recently to pick up a 70L tank from a member on here
It is a complete setup with twinstar light, oase 250 thermo filter and pressurised Co2
Ive had it about 2 weeks now
Take 25 litres of the water with me and set it up in an hour at my home complete with adding back...
Great work everyone
Ive used freshly cut pear tree wood in a tank before without any problems
Didnt see any mention of pine cones but presume they are full of dome resin ?
Then theres cinnamon, which ive seen being used
Can Star anise be used ?
Dandelion leaves are supposed to be good fish...
Unfortunately a lot of shops buy plants with their fish stock from a wholesaler so they dont sell the branded plants we all know,

Hi
Lets say they are bunched plants from a lfs
Theres lots of stuff on web on how to clean new plants & kill off any pests like using bleach
What method do you use ?
Many Many Years ago i used a 9volt battery and copper wire stripped bare at the ends and hung suspended on opposite side of...
You’d need to start with a good number of shrimp from the outset to have any sort of presence in a large tank
So the cost may be a down side to it
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
It doesn’t matter what size the tank is for shrimp
If you like them then the bigger the better as far as I’m concerned
So go with the big one
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Here in uk the lfs will have no choice but to increase the prices of everything in a stock tank , plants shrimp snails fish etc they all use up electricity
I know the owner of a good lfs and they currently pay £1000 per week on electricity so there’s no way they could swallow the extra £500 per...
That’s a crazy distance [emoji23]
I’m sure you could of had one made to the exact dimensions locally for less than the cost of buying that tank and the fuel used ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Congratulations that’s a great find [emoji106] even if the heater and pump do not work you could still do an emersed scape in it
We live in such a wasteful society
People are lazy and stupid it took more effort to take that to the tip than to whack a pic on Fb marketplace, freegle etc...
Shrimp feeding dish
Sinking food for the shrimp while feeding fish floating food
Feed them at opposite ends of your tank
Or feed shrimp at night
Live daphnia disperses so all fish have the same chance to catch it
Or you keep feeding bit at a time until all the fish have fed enough...
Get something you can syphon water in that’s big enough to hold all the water
Put it next to where the tank is going
Cheap option are paddling pools
You can either Empty tank as low as possible small fish will be ok in an inch of water or
Catch fish and empty it completely
Put fish in...
I use to use it all the time in my filter beds it’s was great and grow huge and roots were very iilong
So my concern would be that it grew too big to use in an aquariums filter chamber
What do you want it to take out of the water ?I’llio
Don’t your plants already use it all up
There are...
Just make sure there’s no fat left of then
Can’t see why they would treat them with anything it just add to the costs
Plus if it’s harmful to fish surely it’ll be harmful to birds too
Give one a good clean
Boil it
Then try just one

Which Filter media are you thinking of ?
As it’s for a nano and to eliminate the need fir a basket why not use one piece of filter foam ?
Easily obtained
Easily cut to shape
Easy to get out
Easy to clean
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Why not put a small pump in the aquarium and pump the water to a canister outside
Couldn’t you adapt a flask of a ss water bottle
This would keep the costs down
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Peat blocks have been used for a long time in filters but then it colours the water
Surely it’s easy to use specialist resins these days in a filter
But it’s even easier to use soft water for your water changes
Buy a hma
Buy RO or RO water
Collect rainwater for free

Why didn’t you tell me as the plants only arrived today
And I put them on the surface of my 350 litre to get string light and good Ferts to help them recovery
Not happy mate think I’ll destroy them
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve found a really easy way to raise daphnia
I use large tubs 400litres + but it could easily be scaled down
Fill container with my hma filter add some mature aquarium water from water change
I add snails any type
Then I simply throw in vegetables but I’ve found banana skins are really...
Also be very careful with black Betta sourcing as there are genetic issues with “all black” in Bettas so you want to support a reputable breeder/farm
And because I just can’t resist (once again  )
Note these are Thai Bettas and color names may vary significantly between countries, and...
Remember it will need somewhere to rest level with the surface
I’ve had lots that have slept above the water surface
Happy to get you a black Male when you need it
Yes frosted background will show him off better

You can get rolls of Polystyrene’s in decorating shops
It’s about 2mm thick
It’s not dense so it will squash down easily to fill the void between the board and the cabinet
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think you underestimate the strength of glass
In fish breeders set ups it’s common to just support large tanks just at each end
I’m talking 6ft long 2ft tall 2ft wide
Just sat on timber 2 inches wide just at the ends
This in comparison is a tiny tank
So for a simple solution get a piece...
If you do it by the book there are a lot of costs involved so unless you are opening a business it’s really not economical for the average home aquarium

Insulation insulation insulation
I would recommend 150mm thick dense polystyrene or even better kingspan if the budget will allow
How tall is the building ?
Can you insulate the floor ?
Clear roofs are not good as they will not be as good as an insulated one plus you have no control of how...
I would add all the plants snails and any shrimp
Leave it 2 weeks so you can get the lighting right and sort Out any algae problems
Then I would take some mature media from an existing tank and add that when the fish arrive
I would also have floating plants to help out for the first 6 months...
Have you thought about just using hard scape and only floating plants ?
I’m sure the loach will appreciate to shade the floating plants provide
Or totally thinking outside of the box here what about using a water lilly ?

Last weekend I uprooted the aponogetons I had I’m my trigon 350.
It started as 1 specimen plant at the rear corner to hide pipes but it multiplied in the dirt substrate very fast and the plants were easily a metre long when I took them out to send to a friend.
Now I’m looking for suggestions for...
I don’t think it will come apart as it’s been used a long time in aquariums
For filling gaps and joining things that do not have flat surfaces together I use superglue and baking powder it’s makes a sort of plastic glue
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hi
Will the water change be done in one go
Do you have to have help doing it or do you rely on someone doing it ?
The key to a low maintenance aquarium is very light stocking
What filtration will it have ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If I’m right you already have aquariums set up and this is one for your son
If that’s right why don’t you use some the mature filter media in your sons setup ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you want to fill the gaps around the wood base and the plastic use superglue then sprinkle baking soda on it
I’ve used it to mend and create lots of things
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Where’s your RO filter ?
Does it fill a barrel ?
If so then fill it with the required mix and drop a pond pump in it to pump the water to your tank
How do you heat the water in your home? If it’s a combi boiler use warm tap water for your mix
Are you treating the tape water you use with...
I believe it’s about the type of acrylic you use
There’s two types
Extruded and cast
Extruded is used for almost everything as it’s cheaper to produce but it warps in high humidity
Cast acrylic is used to make aquariums
It’s a lot more expensive even than glass that’s one reason you don’t...
Hi All
I love open top tanks
But
I hate the light pollution you get from them
Anyone got any ideas how to customers it out ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’d say it all depends on how often you use them
Maybe the £100 stay sharper longer which is a bonus if you use them daily in your job
But for mere mortals who tinker weekly or fortnightly then I’m sure the cheapo ones are good enough
I’d compare it to average Joe buying a £5 trowel to build...
I’ve got cheap ones that do the job but never used Ada etc so can not compare
I’ve bought the curved scissors for £5 and I think the ada ones are £100 so are they 20 times better ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
And if the stocking level is minimal then just a pump to circulate the water
Or go old school with an under gravel filter
For the riparian just need a pump to raise the water up to the plants then a waterfall back down
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve been thinking of a real low tech low maintenance setup for a while now and I’ve thought about a tank just of Anubis
Just plain gravel substrate
Nana as ground cover then taller ones at the back
Surface covered with plants
The only drawback I can think of is the initial cost if it’s a...
Hi
If you are not going to have any fish in the older setup then transfer all the media into the new ones filter
Or if you are going to get new fish stock for the older one straight away then swap 50 % of the media to the new setup
If it’s going to be some time swap it all then take some back...
If you buy local betta splendens then you don’t have to change much, either add a glass lid or lower the water level as they will all have been raised in just tap water
Your do lucky being able to do that
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The obvious one is prawns either whole for larger fish or finely chopped for smaller stuff
Stinging nettles
Liver for big predators they love it raw n bloody
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A must is a plant that will grow to the surface and has large enough leaves to use as a bed
I have Bettas that actually sleep above the water surface

He bought eco complete but its about 40mm deep across the whole tank
Stems seem to be staying gown his cabomba C had gone from 150 to 300mm in a week
It's stuff like vallis & crypts that has hardly any roots on that are the problem
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks Mick.Dk
My thinking was just Mould a bit of clay around the bit or root or bottom of stem to add weight to it plus add iron etc
This clay is easy to get just wondered if it's safe to use

Hi all
my mates having a problem as he's bought a selection of loose plants from an online retailer most of which hardly have any roots so they won't anchor down
Substrate is eco complete
Yes I know the tight sob should of bought quality potted plants
Any suggestions to keep them anchored...
ok I bought this many years ago as it was the biggest one I could get away with [emoji23]
Now that I'm trying my hand at plants I realise the corner shape plus the bow front is just a nightmare to scape [emoji35][emoji35][emoji35]
Has anyone got any pics or suggestions for a suitable scape
