What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

The brigittae/merah hybrids are documented as being sterile- but they can reproduce together. Also, merah and brigittae overlap geographically and some mimicry has been observed, also, there are possible 'undescribed' species in these collection zones. In short, its a mess.

    Dwarf Puffer sexing??

I saw a puffer sneak up behind a bigger puffer, bite him and shake it like a dog with a chew toy Scary.
  3. darren636

    Best substrate for pygmy cories

Mine are on a mix of jbl sansibar and unipac Samoa. They are constantly foraging, along with prolonged periods of being absolutely motionless.
  4. darren636

    bio load

It'd going to do something, but remember. A lot of it comes from feeding the fish. Just keep an eye on ammonia levels and be ready to do a waterchange or two.
  5. darren636

    Bold very small schooling fish?

The only time my pygmy's leave the substrate to browse the upper plants is when the lights are off, and my tank is low light. 40w over 260 litres.
  6. darren636

    Bold very small schooling fish?

My pygmies spend 99% of their time on the substrate. All the dwarf Cory's do, really .
  7. darren636

    Bold very small schooling fish?

Microdevario are also prolific jumpers. They don't care about much but will go over the edge
  8. darren636

    Bold very small schooling fish?

In that tank, 12 at least. Even then , they will spook easily.
  9. darren636

    Rainbowfish Diseases?

I hope they are in your quarantine tank, they could wipe out your existing stock.
  10. darren636

    Experience with spawning Pygmy Corys?

Depending on hiding places, and the eggs surviving the 4 day development, you might get one make it. 23 litre is a bit small though, good chance that the betta will find the eggs.
  11. darren636

    Hara Jerdoni

    That's remarkable

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

Mine did, for the first couple of times

    Is my Rummynose Tetra ill?

I'd be worming them. Might even save the thin one.
  14. darren636

Fish keep hiding during CO2/Light period?

This is exactly why I gave up with high tech.
  15. darren636

Fish keep hiding during CO2/Light period?

    Sounds like co2 toxicity.
  16. darren636

    Dwarf Puffer sexing??

Very cute characters But also completely psychopathic!
  17. darren636

    Silly Oto photo

Haha! Look.like planes coming in to land.
  18. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

What's the tank temperature. Just noticed my new group in the q tank are glass surfing Temperature at 30 degrees ! Oooops
  19. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

They're all male ! Addendum. Youre off your trolley!!!
  20. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

They will be able to escape. My microdevario would get double that height !
  21. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

Chloroplasts! Are they a thing? I seem to remember them from biology...
  22. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

    I ordered some yesterday!
  23. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

That's a novel idea. And quite mad! I was pondering this issue last night. You don't see people putting delicate liquorice gourami into high tech set ups,.boraras inhabit the same environments. Just a musing. Good luck with them.
  24. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

I went completely low tech. These guys are not suited to high tech. I'm not saying some people don't have success. Its not quantity - its a group behaviour issue. I'd turn off co2 , reduce light intensity and reduce flow for a couple of days and see what happens, then gradually and slowly ramp...
  25. darren636

What's wrong with my chili rasboras?

Mine hated co2 , bright lights and high flow
  26. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

I agree with manu embers must weigh about 5 x more than a boraras and look to be a stronger, tougher fish. Plus, they are gems in their own right. I've never had them though
  27. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

Its your tank But there's got to be a more suited fish. I used to have 30 brigittae in my high tech, but they hated it. Microdevario would be better. They really don't care about anything and are much better swimmers, much stronger. But will jump when spooked.
  28. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

High flow is exactly what boraras don't like. They live in tea stained puddles With no flow , very dim light and zero nutrients . I can't really imagine a worse environment for any boraras.
  29. darren636

    Shoalling non jumpers

They will jump if its dark and you turn the lights on
  30. darren636

    What Cory is this?

    Aspidora???
  31. darren636

    What Cory is this?

It's not one of the 3 usual suspects- pygmaeus, hastatus and habrosus. Is it corydoras cochui? Not sure about some of the fin markings Planet catfish may be of use
  32. darren636

    Otto pre spawning behaviour?

Females are wider and fatter. I don't see any colouration difference in mine
  33. darren636

    Otto pre spawning behaviour?

You'll notice males following the female , rather than general swimming about
  34. darren636

    Corydoras hastatus (Dwarf Cory) breeding

Mine go nuts in the dawn sun, so light could be a trigger. I do wonder about that 0kh and its effect though. Seriously fish say they need a bit of carbonate hardness
  35. darren636

    Corydoras hastatus (Dwarf Cory) breeding

Could be a lack of kh. Perhaps take it up to 1-2 kh. My water is 50% ro with the rest plain hard tap water- hence my high pH. But I don't think the pH matters.
  36. darren636

    Corydoras hastatus (Dwarf Cory) breeding

Bridgey_c I'm down on the south west coast. This is the second lot of babies I've had, The first spawning only 1 made it to adulthood. This time I set up my 40litre quarantine tank and hatched the eggs in there. Meanwhile another two batches of eggs were laid by another female, so I've ended...
  37. darren636

    Corydoras hastatus (Dwarf Cory) breeding

Pygmy Cory males spawn at 4 months. The girls take a lot longer to reach this stage I guess it's about the same for hastatus. Maybe a touch longer. I'm overrun with pygmy babies at the moment!
  38. darren636

    Oreichthys cosuatis

I saw those hara a couple of years ago. If they stayed really small I would have got a bunch, but I didn't trust the sales guy. Great looking things!

Cardinal Tetras with white spot, eventually dies

Looks like a parasite. Dermosporidia ? Its very trendy right now Lots of gravel vacuuming and water changes.
  40. darren636

22 litre nano / what am I limited to

Female erythromicron have pale bellies, whereas the males have full vertical stripes . Males do spar on a daily basis and my 40 litre proved too small to accommodate my group of 6, which bred quite prolifically in hard water.
  41. darren636

22 litre nano / what am I limited to

    None , really.
  42. darren636

    Ottos eating cyclops

My otos love new era tropical grazer and new era catfish pellets. Both have plenty of animal protein. And I'm guessing the biofilm and algae otos consume in the wild has plenty of single celled bugs.
  43. darren636

    Ottos

I've got multiple pygmy fry, scooting about oblivious to me out in the open, But the adults hide when I go near, I've seen it before in previous fry, once they start schooling with the adults, they learn to hide with them.
  44. darren636

    Ottos

Last week I've been leaving the porch light on, this gives just enough light to see the otos in silhouette at night. Took 3 nights to finally spot all of them out at once. Noticed my pygmy corydoras spend more time mid water at night than during the day, even though my tank is low light. Both...

    algae seaweed for ottos

My otos wait for vegetables to get mushy before eating. Can take 2 days for them to regard it as food Also, They are partial to NEW ERA TROPICAL GRAZER.

  55. darren636

Breeding Corydoras Panda for the first time

Feed fish some live food for a few days. Then do a cool , softer water , water change. You will notice in the early morning fish going crazy. Chasing etc
  56. darren636

    Fish flakes...do they expire?

You can buy starter cultures of microworm . very cheap. Just mix up some ready break in an old ice cream tub and add culture.
  57. darren636

Would corys be ok on nutasoil?

I think they will be perfectly happy. Its nice and rounded shape will allow corydoras to root about without issue.
  58. darren636

    Fish flakes...do they expire?

Yeah, they spoil , same as any food stuff. My fish are tiny, even the smallest food pouch lasts forever. I renew my food every few months. Some people buy in bulk, remove what they need for a month and seal the main container air tight. If possible, have 2-3 different foods on the go, with...

Fish for A 20 Liter Tank

can you tell me about your set up/ maintenance regime? My lfs had a group of 9 of these for about a year. wish I had given them a home- they looked pretty sad in 400ppm + water , with nowhere to hide
  70. darren636

Fish for A 20 Liter Tank

You can do as you like! Maybe boraras uropthalmoides- they really are small. But you will need soft water and Lots of water changes for fish. . Shrimp not take your fancy?

    Shoaling fish in hard water

Perhaps mine are just lazy! but yeah, they resent high flow, and as for breeding- there is confusion as to how many species of 'brigittae' there are and even the scientists can't agree on many aspects such as sexing and reproduction. My dominant males dance and display to the females a lot...
  76. darren636

    Shoaling fish in hard water

I have found co2 of no benefit for my b. Brigittae. In fact, they detest the extra water flow necessary to distribute co2 effectively , however they lose most natural behaviour at tds 200+ , even if the ph is acidic or neutral, yet display and court at low tds even if the ph is over 8.
  77. darren636

    Shoaling fish in hard water

ph down and co2 won't help the fish in any way. boraras need softer water, 100- 180 ppm for decent behaviour and life span
  78. darren636

    What fish is this?

    its a big fish :shh:
  79. darren636

  83. darren636

    Shoaling fish in hard water

Small schooling fish for new tank

Maculata should be boraras maculata. D. Erythromicron are related to the c p d ,they come from lake inle and must have. Alkaline water. Unlike the others who do best in acidic. How about microrasbora rubescens , too?
  88. darren636

Small schooling fish for new tank

microdevario kubotai are crazy ,dumb fish. they are not interested in exploring or searching for food, all they do is squabble. microdevario nana might be a better choice. boraras are much more interesting, they get around, search all the areas and explore.
  89. darren636

Small schooling fish for new tank

50 cardinals is too many in a 180, embers and any of the boraras are fine.
  90. darren636

    nannostomus beckfordi jumpers ?

weeeell... if you dont fill ut up to the brim, and have some floating plants in the corners, it might be ok. in an open top tank you are likely to have casualties, of many species,

    Celestial danio stocking advice

you might find the boraras to be as shy as the cpd. i have 40 chili 's and hardly see them in my 260. they spend most time in and around the plants and wood. darting in and out.

    Tetras & Shrimp

    Tetras & Shrimp

that depends on which tetra you want.... most have teeth and will use em' .... in fairness , most fish will eat baby shrimp.
  100. darren636

    how many rasboras?
