    Fundamentals of Aquatic Lighting

Neither, the optimal light was "researched" a long time ago .. the old t8 tubes setup provide(d) everything that is(was) needed. Later on the producers decided that this approach wasn't beneficial for their big pockets and threw in t5s, mhs and now leds. If algae had been traded on stock it...

    Fundamentals of Aquatic Lighting

For me is a mix between #1 & #6 for aesthetics, if I like how it renders the color I stick on it, I don't care about something else since I run my tanks with T8s, they are enough to grow any plant and not too much to make my fish wanting to war sunglasses. Cheers, Mike

    Colour temperature

Actually I don't know if kelvin numbers are accurate, I mean I had one 965 and one 865 at home, both 6500k of course and the 965 was on the orange side without much on the greens and everything looked meh, poo like. I put it in the bin and now I'm using only 865s. Back to the OPs question, using...

    T5 LED tubes?

The quantity and quality of light is poor for that type of leds, try at least ones with a better CRI to render the colors properly.

Have we got any good nano LED ideas yet?

The 7W Eheim lamp ~ 84$ (is it dimmable?) RapidLED (3x Cree 5W, Dimmable Nano Driver, Heatsink, Adhesive) ~ 65$ or you can go for cheap ebay leds.

    Lowering Juwel Lighting Levels

The reflector works for me, be sure to have metal clips, the plastic ones break in time and it could fall. I don't have clips and I just bent it, no issues during the summer. Mike

Desk lamp bulb for aquarium AND accurate colour rendition for monitor!

Any desk lamp should do, you should easily find a 6500k bulb to fit it, an Osram/Philips 23w should be fine (I use these types of bulbs: ESSENTIAL 23W CDL E27 220-240V 1CT - Philips). Mike

    Split photo periods?

There are a bunch of myths about lighting, there's no minimum or maximum required period, you can use any as long as you do the fertilization correctly and choose the right plants. Be advised that for longer periods (>12h) you need to cut the intensity a lot and provide shades to keep the fish...

ADA Aquasky LEDs Hands on experience

I think they balance the light units for their system (tank size, ferts, amount of CO2 suggested, filtration) so there shouldn't be any issues if the tank is run correctly. Yes dimming would be nice but, for now, a basic one that's not overly expensive it's just perfect. This is the one I was...

    LED Lighting

I hardly think you can achieve something nice if you go on the classic planted aquarium route given the tall shape. I'd strip it and make a paludarium/riparium (google them) 1/3 water and the background filled with plants, use the ADA soil to fill the plants' baskets and gravel/stones for the...

2x54w without reflectors is the limit your tank size can handle without issues if the lamp is close to the water surface ~6".

    LED upgrade or this?

I've only seen that you are trying to grow some mosses that usually do well even with room's ambient light. You don't really need gazillions watts, usually for your tank's size 1x 11w/13w Clip on PL Nano Light like this one: http://www.dennerle.eu/global/index.php ... 78&lang=en would suffice...

If you cover the water surface with lots of floating plants the HQI wouldn't be an issue. Mike

    Converting Marine to Planted Freshwater

A typical amazon tank looks like this: A nice background, some roots, a couple of swords and some floaters and of course fish. Forget about discus cause your tank is too small for them when they are fully grown but you can buy some small south american chiclids and a shoal of tetras. The HQI...

    Side lighting the tank

Just started my experiment by keeping on the background light 2x24w t5s during the photoperiod (indirect light bouncing from the white wall, the unit is placed slightly below the tank level). Anyone into this? After a week I can say that my rotalas near the back glass are pinkish but crawling...

    Enough Light?

I know what you feel, I've been there myself. I'm not a scientist but I can tell you form my current knowledge that you can fight algae blooms using a few lighting tricks: - lower the intensity (turn off some tubes, take the reflectors out) or, - lower the photoperiod to a couple of hours a day...

    Enough Light?

I wouldn't trust aquajournal 100% about plant growth. I think Ceg is encouraging us to think and act more on plant growth and not spend our efforts fighting algae, thus avoiding algae blooms. You can't eliminate all the algae in the aquarium even with everything in check (light, ferts...

    2x11w or 2x18w over 60cm?

Oh I remember you used to be really good at DIY :). You can also make the luminaire yourself BTW. Mike

    2x11w or 2x18w over 60cm?

You really don't need to run one tube, just rise the lamp a bit until things settle in, that's why I also pointed the suspension kit. Run it for 5-6h/day and slowly increase the period 0.5-1h / week. :)

    2x11w or 2x18w over 60cm?

I find that PL lights don't cover as much area as tubes do. They are nice for nano cubes though. You'll need at least 4 to cover "evenly" the tank and I don't think it's going to look that nice. :) You shouldn't rush if you can't afford a decent luminaire, better wait another month. Mike

Plants with less and more light

Don't think Viktor is still using T8s. :) About the purple coloring hmm I still don't think it needs only huge amounts of light, fertilizing regime I think it plays a big role. I'll try an experiment the next weeks in my tank using medium to high lighting, low NP fertilization and lots of CO2...

Plants with less and more light

Totally agree with you Viktor, for example rotalas and some ludwigias like arcuata and brevipes need more light to show off the beautifull colors and shapes. BTW your arcuata should be purple  Mike

    60x40x40: lighting?

If the plants are already adapted to the tank and you match the CO2/nutrients to the light and plant mass probably you won't have any issues. If you've just put the plants in your tank is better to play safe for a while until they adapt and loose the old leaves. That means you can use 1 T5, then...

    60x40x40: lighting?

I usually run high lit aquariums but for the first weeks I tend to keep the photo-period up to 5h/day and increase it slowly the following weeks. Try to match the CO2, flow and EI dosing accordingly. Keep us updated if there are any issues and remember to plant it heavily. Mike

    60x40x40: lighting?

2x24w with reflectors would suffice, anyway make sure the flow reaches the bottom of the tank.
