    Pond Soil!?!?!?

I've used Blagdons for my low-tech. Been up and running a few weeks now and all seems OK.

using soil in the aquarium types of compost to use

Others may disagree but I'd not use sand over soil. I think you'll find anaerobic soil if you do. As for which soil to use... I've been trying to work out which soil to use for ages. So many conflicting facts. If I still go low-tech then I think I'm settled on either garden soil or aquatic soil.

    washing gravel

I usually fill a bucket about 3rd deep with the gravel and then use my hose on the jet setting. Keep the bucket tipped over slightly so it does not fill up (i.e. just overflows on one side) and when the water get really murky give it a tip to get rid of the water. Keep going until the water is...

Anaerobic areas - good, bad or indifferent?

But that then leads to yet another question to support the basis of your question, or more the point your observation that it does not make a difference... You based the outcome of your experience on an assumption that you have anaerobic areas. If, in fact, you don't have anaerobic areas then...

Anaerobic areas - good, bad or indifferent?

It seems that nobody can deny that a heated cable may make a difference. The whole area is surrounded by opinion, conjecture, and absence of fact for or against the claimed or incidental benefits (or not). Both of my previous posts have been borne out by the subsequent comments. I think my...

Anaerobic areas - good, bad or indifferent?

You gotta admit, it's an avenue worth exploring... Everyone is quite nonchalant about their preference to use or not without really being able to substantiate their reasons other than to usually state that the plants just seem to grow fine without, therefore, why bother. I would agree that plant...

Anaerobic areas - good, bad or indifferent?

Perhaps this is where an UG heating cable may prove useful?

need advice on substrate for new tank

I've got a bow fronted tank (albeit just a small Aqua 40 cube) and it ruins the depth completely - looking through the front (curved) pane it looks about 10cm from front to back when, in fact, it's nearly 30cm! The effect is worse the further from the tank you are. It's an effect that I suppose...
