If you're only changing 4l in a 30l tank I can't see any problem going with 50/50 straight away, You're only replacing 2l of tap for RO, it will take quite a while to reach equilibrium but that's OK.

I'm with Darrel, a very thin sprinkling of sand on the bottom, it doesn't matter if some gets sucked up during maintenance, occasionally just add a bit more.

I personally think they are beneficial for a month or so at start-up purely as a source of oxygen until the plants get going, Aquarium Gardens, Green Aqua and the like use them, but they are most definitely not needed.

I occasionally find a plant of BBA waving in the wind at the junction of the highest point of flow in my tank (opposite the outlets) and conversely find one under some Buce leaves now and again low down near the substrate where there is a lot less flow and probably also traces of organic...

If they are being forced underwater then that's probably not a good thing. I would plant a good few clumps of Limnophila Sessiflora (or similar fast growing plant) along the back your tank to help kickstart the ecosystem, they will also help to protect your floating plants once they have grown...

To be honest I'm not sure mate that's why it became an interest, you've got a dirtied tank perhaps something is leaching out from there. At 330 TDS tap water I doubt Seiru Stone will dissolve in that but I'm not an expert.

Going back a bit I'm interested to know what's increasing your TDS so much That seems to be a lot of fertz and fish food. Cheers!

As far as I'm aware glute is only really effective against red algaes i.e. black beard algae, it has a limited effect on the green algaes.

Depends on the parameters of your tap water, coming from the North West it's quite probable your water is soft. I keep mine at GH5 KH1-2 and without scouring the WWW I think this is about right. Consistency is one of the most important factors keeping shrimp. Cheers!
