If so the little O rings that you can see in your first pic caused the same problem for me, I replaced them and have had no problems since.

I run Ex 1200s and have had no problems, however another filter I had, had a small problem on the inlet hose which allowed it to suck air in as it brought the water into the filter. I cut off the end of the hose, reseated it and have had no problems since.
I clean mine when it looks like they need them. For glass pipes like lilyglass, etc I use a flexi brush I bought from AE & for the longer flexible pipes I have a pair of long rigid pipe cleaners (1m) - I can't remember where I bought them but it may have been aquatics online.
