    PH and KH problems

pH doesnt kill fish, or plants. more than likley it will affect the filter bacteria at a certain point which will then lead to the death of a fish. but still, i have read people who have experienced pH in the range of 4-5 with no problems. KH is a measure of alkaliniity (carbonate &...

Zero nitrite? 2 weeks in - seems an odd result

because as soon as ammonia is produced, it isnt instantly utilised by the plants! It does pass through the filter and the bit that does pass through goes towards filter bacteria development. Taht is why you should add about 6 fish per week, so it isnt a sudden jump/.

Zero nitrite? 2 weeks in - seems an odd result

well the amount of NH4 produced by rotting food the plants will utilise it! Anything that is left over probably wont be enough to make a difference to bacteria levels, especially when you add fish as it will be more than the bacteria can handle anyway  There is 2 ways you can go about...

    Phosphate buffers

thanks, i dont think i will bother soaking it in a pH buffer. The size/ volume of purigen i have against the 200litres of water i doubt will cause any harm to my livestock. I think that is all it is for. I cant see how it would affect the adsorption in any way

    Phosphate buffers

Thanks Andy, did the malt vinegar work then? lol I think Dave meant post a thread on PO4 causes algae, not about rowaphos. There is a thread in my signature that goes pretty in depth about algae & nutrients if it is of any interest.

you can get ammonia from halfords or boots i think. as long as it is ammonia & water it will be safe. When you shake the bottle it will bubble, but they shoulld disappear. This is safe. If the bubbles stay (like soap bubbles) then it is no good

    Water testing kit strips

there isnt really much need for them once a tank is establishes. Any ammonia produced, even whats undectable to a test kit, you will know about because you will probably get an algal bloom, so you can always do a waterchange to help.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

Jen, you will probably have the whole of UKAPS going against your comment here, and it is not because we are a bunch of bullies, but that is Clive's method of speech, he uses examples to help get his point across, (the Matrix pops up a lot :P ), he has taught a vast majority of people some very...

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

I cant find any post which says copper is added with dechlornation? Some have said copper levels build up if you dont dechlorinate, but plants use copper anyway. thanks.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

i use it when i remember, if i run out i dont panic about it though, I used to use POND Doctor which for £6 500ml treated 11,250litres, but i recently changed over to seachem prime, which costs £10 500ml, but treats 20,000litres  Prime is about the only decently priced dechlorinator...

    got my water report!

the ones you need to know (if you need too that is!) are pH ammonia/ ammonium nitrite nitrate chlorine? Nitrate phosphate potassium then all the different compunds in trace elements. But in all seriousness i doubt this will make the slight difference in your dosing regime.

    NO3 Calibration Results

fish can survive NO3 levels in the 100's of ppm although certain species such as salminoides & fry require lower levels.

    Drop checker problems???

if you want to make up your own 4dkh then.... Add 6g of pure Sodium Bicarbonate to 5l of DeIonised water (DI) to give you a solution at 40dKH. Mix 10ml of this solution with 90ml of 'fresh' DI to give you 1l of 4dKH reference solution. This obviously makes a lot, so you can sell some on...

using remineralising agents with EI and RO water

When injecting CO2, having a lower kH means the ph would drop further than it normally would. For instance tank "A" has pH 7, kH10 - the CO2 injection may only lower the pH to 6.8 Tank "B"also has a pH of 7, but kH4 - the CO2 injection will lower the pH further, to 6.6 This is the wrong way...

    Cycling 4' tank, suspect results.

you will get nitrate showing, but you have to wait until the ammonia is processed in 12 hours, so keep adding more ammonia until this happens. i posted the above, to show that if you are adding 3ppm, 10ppm of nitrate should be about right going with the above calculation. there is a thread on...

1mg/l Ammonia >> 2.7mg/l Nitrite >> 3.7mg/l Nitrate Mg/l and ppm are essentially the same for this purpose.
