Hi Piotr
The crypt in my nano is Cryptocoryne Tropica, and the stemmed plants in the foreground are indeed Staurogyne Repens ( green) and Alternanthera Reineckii 'Mini' (pink) - well done :)
I'll get Dan to confirm re his tank today.
I look forward to seeing the videos.
Tony
Here are the 10 great scapes from the AquaScaping competition, these were all scaped on Saturday, and then judged on Sunday morning by Heiko Bleher, Dan Crawford, James Starr Marshall, Mark Evans, Chris Lukhap and Lars Green from Tropica.
Reigning champion Stu Worrall...
(Just thought I'd post these comments in the main AL thread ;) )
Great to meet up with everyone at Aquatics Live 2012 this weekend, the show was pretty good overall, but I think the planted tanks of the ukaps, freshwatershrimp, and Aquajardin stands stood out above the rest !
This was the...
My Hydors don't click either, though theres a pretty fast flow through them too.
As an aside, its worth using some tape on the temperature dial of Hydors, to stop it being accidentally rotated. There have been quite a few stories on here and elsewhere of folks finding their fish dead having...
Mine was ordered through TGM, and has very little silicon in the corners, just where the edge meets a face - its very neat and tidy. I believe there is a correlation between the size of the tank / thickness of the glass / and amount of silicon required.
Tony
Hi John, my 100cm optiwhite is from Aquariums Ltd and the quality is excellent - well worth the wait. My nano is an ADA mini M , and the quality is even better with the finest silicon work you'll see, and superb value for money too.
Tony
Hi - look forward to seeing the pics :)
As already said, cut the photo period down to 6 - 8 hours max. Then work on your CO2, in a tank that size ( you havent mentioned the depth front to back, but I'm going to guess its 24", which would give you something like 800 L volume) I'd split the CO2...
Hiya
The metal ones from Aqua Essentials ( http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/ae-design-brass-non-return-valve-p-1607.html ) have barbed fittings that stop the CO2 pipe slipping off. Works best with the harder CO2 pipe which is a tight fit, rather than the more rubbery type pipe.
Hope that...
Hi Laurie, and welcome to ukaps :D
As Ceejay says, go for the 4dkH in the drop checker. Once you have that right, and as long as their is no livestock in the tank, ramp the CO2 right up so the DC goes yellow to help the plants recover from the travels. You'll then have to gradually reduce...
I had a 3ft tall x 3ft wide x 12"deep tank for my discus for a while, but it was no good at all for a planted tank, as you couldn't reach the substrate for planting, pruning, cleaning etc It was virtually impossible to even position the hardscape - you had to reach down as far as you could then...
Looks like a good starting plan Frank - it'd be nice to get some height in the back corner of the tank as its pretty deep front to back.
Look forward to the pics.
Tony
Hi
I'd ordered the IAPLC 2010 book directly from ADA in Japan, and it arrived this morning ( it took 8 days ). As a bonus they have also thrown in the new "Book of ADA" :)
Both are beautifully presented works, and well worth the £17 outlay.
The IAPLC book has an A4 page devoted to each of...
Thanks guys :D
I've just been away for a month, so am catching up on all things ukaps. The tank survived fairly well, except for a BBA outbreak  It would seem the E Tennellus was particularly keen on the simplified ferts regime I left the person looking after the house - it has gone...
Hi Jarthel
I know its really tricky to buy hardscape on line, as its so hard to see the 3D shapes of the wood from a photo or two. The fact that it is probably the most important part of your tank design makes it even trickier !
If the shop wont take the items back (and IMO when it comes to...
Its really tricky to select wood without seeing it in the tank. If you already own the tank and the roots, then try them in there and post some pics - it'll give a far better sense of the scale of the wood and how it sits in the tank space.
If you havent bought the wood yet, and its at your...
Hi Jarthel
I had a 90cm tall tank for a while, and it was impossible to work with as I just couldnt reach the substrate (I'm 6'2 with long arms !!).
I think anything deeper that the distance from your armpit to the start of your fingers gets tricky to work with.
Tony
As the wood is on its way, we've locked this and the other threads, and collated all the info into a new thread here:
http://www.ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6687
Wow, thanks Tom :D We really appreciate all your efforts in getting this over to us, I'm sure it isn't the easiest of stuff to package up. I'll drop you a PM re payment :D
I'll have a chat with Dan Crawford today about how we're going to distribute all this.
Cheers
Tony
Hi Nick
I'd go with the inline hydor if your running an external filter - as Garuf says, only about £20 - £25 on ebay. It'll give you stability, and the option of more fauna :D
Tony
Hi all
My new tank has arrived, so I'm going to start scaping it in the next few days.
If I add mulm from my other tanks filters below the substrate, but then dont add water to the tank for a few days, will the goodness in the mulm be useless ? I'll be playing around with hardscape for a few...
Hi Tom
Will you have any ready to send in the next few days ? Just thinking that our get together at TGM is on the 17th May, so if it could get here before then I can take it along for folks. USPS reckons 6-10days so I guess it would have to leave you by the 6th to be safe.
Let me know how...
I just had a look around for quotes, and it seems USPS might be the best option.
They'll do a 30lb box, max length 60", and max total length+girth of 108" for $114 ( about £78 ). Delivery will be 6-10 days.
To give you an idea, this arrangement of manzanita is about 60cm x 60cm, and weighs...
Hi Tom
As with Dan, I'm happy to take a box here too (I'm in Surrey).
Personally I'd like enough pieces for a centre style layout in a 40" x 20" x 20" tank, with branches coming up out of the surface.
If I get quotes for shipping a box say 36" x 24" x 24" and weighing 30lb / 15kg would that...
Yep, I'm liking the iwagumi style, though I can see me getting bored with looking at one too. To me the enjoyment would come from getting the hardscape right, so I'd probably redo it every few months.
I find the journals the most inspiring section of the forum. Its great to see what everyone else is up to, and great to see how a scapes life starts out. Equipment selection, substrate laying, hardscaping choice and positioning, right through to plant choice, positioning and eventual pruning...
I guess I'm similar to above, although I'm so new to this, that mine are short term so far :D
I really enjoy the hardscaping bit, and am a bit impatient so the nano will get rescaped fairly regularly - its so quick and easy to work on. However the bigger tank will be long term, as changing...
Interesting you say that Clark, I find in my nano, that I get more pearling when the flow is turned down a bit ! Maybe the higher flow of the eheim in the little nano creates too much aeration, even though the lily outlet is well below the surface.
Tony
I wish I'd known how easy it is to scratch front of the tank, when a bit of the sand gets stuck in the scourer your using
Which led to......
A pale, or white background will show up glass scratches far less than a dark background :D
The general recommendation is a minimum 10 x flow for planted, so for your 12 litres, aim for at least 120lph. I run an external eheim, and I think eden 501's are well thought of.
Tony
I've ordered on too from p@h, as said above, 10% off too !
Says 4 days for delivery, so we'll see if when it arrives - I thought it was out of stock with all suppliers.
Tony
A copy of Book 1 sold on ebay for £15 last Sunday, and one sold a couple of weeks earlier for over £50 ! I was all poised to put a late bid on the £15 one, when the phone rang and I got distracted
I've got book 3 which is great, and will keep an eye out for the rest.
Tony
If it helps rest your mind a little, we had an unexpected power failure last year in the house and it was off for about 36 hours.
So we had no filters, no lights, no CO2, and no heating - the tank temp dropped to 19C.
We lost a few plants and had alot of muck / algae in the tank...
Hi Garuf
Sorry to hear this - I've had a close call with my Hydor when I caught the dial accidently - luckily I caught mine in time. I have found that the temp you select on the dial is not that accurate though.
Take a few days to come to terms with it, and I'm sure you'll come back to it...
Thanks guys - the DC is new from AE and shows no signs of damage, so I'm not sure about it leaking.
I'm now thinking this:
Between 5am and 6am the DC has been out of the water, due to the water change. It would therefore go blue from the air. As the water level would fill back up it would...
A little update....
I just renewed the 4dKH solution in the DC, which was 8 days old, and within an hour it has turned to yellow. So it looks like CO2 poisoning was the problem :(  I've now got the CO2 off and the O2 on for a couple of hours to bring it back down. I guess it...
Is CO2 poisoning degenerative / cumulative (not sure that those are the right terms ) ?
Its just that the CO2 is only on from 7.30am to 4pm, then the lights stay on for another hour, then the O2 pump kicks in for 7 hours. At 5am 50 odd litres of water are pumped out, with fresh (non Co2'd)...
Hi James
Thanks for your reply. Both my spray bars put water in at surface level, so that creates movement on the surface (and theres no scum). I also have 2 airstones which come on after main lights go out, and stay on until midnight to inject O2.
Thanks for the reassurance on the dosing...
Hi Sam
Yep, that was my first thought - I just find it weird that non of the other fish have any symptoms, especially the discus who started breathing a bit heavily a couple of weeks back when the DC slipped in to the yellow for a couple of hours by accident. I guess some fish are more...
Evening all
I've lost a couple of fish today, and am trying to work out why. One of my SAE's died last night, and the other died this morning - each was breathing incredibly quickly prior to dying. I've now just noticed my oto has died too. All the other fish - 13 discus, 30+ rummys, botia...
From the article: "launched at the Pet and Aquatic Trade Shows (PATS) in Sandown during mid March"
Is this show trade only, as the title suggests ? I'm 5 mins from Sandown so would love to go if I could get in !
Sorry for the hijack
