    Anubias Leaves Falling Off

Thanks for all the info :D that's really helpful. This is a non-CO2-injection tank and stocking is neither under or over-stocked. So I gather it's ok to dose TPN+ according to the bottle, no Excel and a water change say once a month?
  2. T

    Anubias Leaves Falling Off

Do you think? I thought they'd be okay, I've seen many other tanks where people dose this loosely with good results. How much/often would you recommend I dose?

    Anubias Leaves Falling Off

This tank was set up in January and has been added to gradually since then. I've had anubias in there from the start. Obviously the ones that were added earlier on are doing better because they've had time to establish themselves. I don't know where they're coming from, but lately I've...

    A good floater.

What's Dwarf Clover? Are you referring to HC? You need more light than you currently have to grow Glosso and HC. At least around 2-2.5WPG.
  6. T

    A good floater.

Eleocharis (Hairgrass) should be ok as a foreground plant.

    Plants that tolerate cooler temperatures?

I think Ferns and Anubias would cope. Maybe Moss aswell, but I think that's about it.

    Anubias Barteri var Barteri

It sure does do best when attached to wood or rock. DO NOT plant it in the substrate.

    java fern

 I don't think that's Java Fern... I think Phillipine is slightly longer and a bit thinner... I don't really know how to explain. Go onto Google Images and compare.

Suggest a plant to add some colour?

Are you specifically looking for a stem? I think some type of Fern would look pretty cool.

    narrow/needle leaf java fern

^ That's it ;) Narrow leaved Ferns tend to have longer leaves. Needle are smaller.

Bolbitis heudelotii - how would you use it...

I'm not sure on placement, have a play and see what looks best. It's fine to staple - much easier than fiddling around with cotton. If you do have any spare, I'm sure someone could put it to good use *wink wink* :P

They are the same plants, AE have just got a section so people who want easy plants can just buy from that part of the shop. Each pot is about 5cm I'd say, if you tell us thet ank dimensions, the plants you want etc then we'll be able to give you an idea on how many to get.

    Crypt Plantin

I'm going to be buying some Crypts soon for my tank, and want to do it properly. So, here's what I gather is the best way to plant them: - Remove the rockwool from the roots - Split the plant into plantlets - a few stems on each plantlet - Cut the roots back to about an inch - Plant in the...

    can you keep plants overnight

I would say they would be fine in a bucket overnight, although I would be a bit reluctant to keep them in there any longer. They probably would be fine though - if you did want to keep them in there longer then do a water change each day and maybe add a small amount of ferts or something, but...

Can you leave aquabasis uncapped? If you can, then do. I'm not sure about the hairgrass issue. From experience, those conditions should be fine. When I was first starting out with plants, I had some in a tank with 1.5wpg, no ferts or co2 *not even liquid) and just gravel. I didn't give it a...
  26. T

    rotala

Both will work. You could also try Eleocharis (hairgrass), Crypt Parva and E tenellus although they do grow quite tall. Hairgrass is a good option though.
  27. T

    rotala

I've seen quite a few tanks where Glosso has been used as a foreground plant in a tank with gravel substrate. Just make sure the gravel is quite fine.
  28. T

    rotala

Yeah, as Mark said stems will grow as tall as you let them. I'm not sure about the Tropica substrate. I don't know the ins and outs behind it but I think it's got some stuff in it that if you leave it uncapped can be toxic to the fish. Don't take this as fact though.

    ...do these need CO2 injection?

I've been looking through a few journals and stuff including George's 'Little Mountain'. Tips and tricks for handling plants in the aquarium

^ Seperate it into plantlets (just pull the plant apart into clumps just above the root), trim the roots back a bit and then trim the leaves right back. This should promote a lot of new growth. Nice video, it should help a lot of newbies to planted tanks.

    Toxic plants

I guess so, unless they are dying gradually or something. I don't think this theory is correct to be honest, Anubias and the other plants may be toxic in some way but not in the sense that they have any affect on shrimp.
  46. T

    Toxic plants

I have heard of this before, but only in Anubias. I immediately thought of your tank, Andy and I'm sure there's a million other tanks out there with these plants and shrimp. Probably is just a myth.
  47. T

    Toxic plants

Really? I just put an Anubias into a tank that will house shrimp and am planning to put cabomba in there. I'd be interested to know if there is any truth in this, definately.
  48. T

    similar types

Try The Green Machine, another one of our sponsors. Bacoupa Australis is a background plant, but it can be used mid-ground I suppose and I have heard of it even being used as a foreground plant.

    A Stupid Plant/Substrate-Related Question

I'm putting gravel etc over it because it's gonna be a biotope and that's the substrate which will be most natural. I could go with Tropica, but I already have the AquaSoil lying around so there's no point in spending more money!

    A Stupid Plant/Substrate-Related Question

    A Stupid Plant/Substrate-Related Question

Okay, so this is probably a really really really really really really really really (you get the idea) stupid question. I'm going to set up a tank after Christmas with a substrate base of ADA AquaSoil, topped with a mix of graded gravel (i.e. 8mm grains down to 2mm) and sand. Thetank will be...

    plants for low light tank.?

Sounds cool, let us know how you get on! :)
  56. T

    plants for low light tank.?

I don't know about that one - Google it. There are two 'foreground' plants that would be okay for you - Crypt Parva and Eleocharis Parvula. They're not as low as things like Glosso and HC but do stay quite low - enough to be a foreground plant.
  57. T

    plants for low light tank.?

Yeah, I think all Crypts are fine in low light. I've never seen one that isn't. If in doubt, just Google any plants you're unsure of.
  58. T

    plants for low light tank.?

There's quite a bit of choice for you, seeing as you inject CO2 aswell. Anubias Moss Crypts Ferns Most stems Most Echinodorus (Amazon Swords) Hairgrass Vallis

Maybe a really small Echinodourus or a really neat looking Crypt? :? :)

    Limnobium Laevigatum (Amazon Frogbit)

I've not kept it personally, but I've heard that it's a great plant but can grow quite large quite quickly and block out quite a lot of light.
  61. T

    fore ground plants

I think your only option would be Cryptocoryne Parva, will grow to about 6cm under your light. All other foreground plants demand hight light, good fertilisation and CO2 injection. It is quite expensive from Tropica - you can get it from www.aquaessentials.co.uk or www.thegreenmachineonline.com...

    Planting Crypts

^ I know, but what I'm saying is: 1. Should there be several stems coming from the crown (i.e. five or six) or 2. Should you just plant ONE stem at a time (i.e. have just one stem coming from each crown and plant it like that)
  63. T

    Planting Crypts

I've seen that but it still doesn't really explain it properly :(

    Planting Crypts

Crypts are my favourite plant, but I still don't know if I'm planting them correctly. I know you need to seperate them into 'plantlets', but what exactly are plantlets? I seperate them into clumps with about 5-6 stems in each. Is it better to just seperate each stem, and plant each stem...
  65. T

    Crypts.

Best place is one of our sponsors, Aqua Essentials or The Green Machine. Your best bet for the foreground is Parva, stays quite low at about 4cm I think. For the midground there are quite a few choices, the main one that comes to miund is Wendtii but have a look through the Tropica catalogue...

  67. T

    A Question

That makes a lot more sense now, thanks guys. So a generic HC mountain scape could be achieveable without CO2 injection as long as there is enough light and TPN+/Easy Carbo dosing?
  68. T

    A Question

^ It's not really for a specific tank, I was just wondering. Do you really reckon anything could be grown? Even without co2 injection?
  69. T

    plants for goldfish tank

I thnk Anubias and Java Ferns are okay, like you already said. Moss might survive but don't count on it, the Goldfish might take a liking to it. Apart from that, the only other plant I can think of is Elodea Densa.

  74. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

I don't feel confident enough to use CO2 to be honest. It would be great if someone could tell me all of the equipment that I need. I'm sure it's better to get his done while I have some spare change!
  75. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

    No CO2 injection, just Excel.
  76. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

Oh right, I could get a 205 instead because the 405 seems too much. The 105 can do for the 35l that I have. So Glossostigma Elatinoides would be fine with this, yeah?
  77. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

It's suitable for aquariums under 100l according to the box - mine is 72l.
  78. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

I forgot to mention that the lighting will be T5. The filter will be a Fluval 105.
  79. T

    Glossostigma Elatinoides

I plan to use Glossostigma Elatinoides in the next few months, having never grown it before. The aquarium in question will have around 2WPG, Seachem Flourish Excel and Tropica Plant Nutrition+ dosing. Is this suitable?
