What species do you have now?
Amazon Swords and Crypts have good root systems, although you'll need to let them establish themselves first. You could also have Java Ferns and Anubias attached to wood.
I sorted out the Fluval 105 today! Everything for this tank is sorted now, except for the plants. I'll start a journal up once I've got things done. :D
I do have a Fluval 105 that I've never used. I tried to use it once but obviously did something wrong because it leaked and stuff... I'll give it another go. The only thing is, the intake/outake are quite large anyway.
That's what I thought about the water changes, Andy. I've seen quite a few tanks on here where that's been done.
Ed, thanks for that advice - it makes more sense now you've put it like that!
Do you think (about the crampness)? I've got a similar internal to what I'll be getting - it's not...
Nope, no CO2 injection - just EasyCarbo. Thanks for the advice, Mark. That's the main thing I wasn't sure on myself. I'll wait for someone who has more experience with that to help out.
Ok, I'm planning a tank that I would consider my first real aquascape, so I want to get it right. I'd appreciate it if a few of the more experienced members could look over my plan and see if they think it's viable.
Tank: 35l (approx. 50x30x25)
Lighting: 14w (approx. 1.5WPG) 6 hours for the...
I've only got the 2008 booklet but I'm dissapointed with it. The photos are too small and there's not any information on any of the setups past the top 10 or so I think.
You'd be better off buying a Nature Aquarium World book if you haven't already got all three, or from what I hear the Aqua...
I think photos are definately the most attraction!
And as George said, opinions and comments are what you're aiming for but not just from experienced members - everyone's opinion counts.
^ I think the reason also being that if the creator publishes the image that they are going to use in the competition beforehand then someone else could steal it.
I don't think we have a lack of journals at all. I mean, if you wanna post a journal for your tank then you will, if you don't the you won't I suppose.
Simples ;)
I think it's nice to read through journals, and equally as nice when someone just posts amazing tank photos out of the blue. It's...
I'm a long-term kinda guy.
Well... that's the idea anyway. I plan for my 'aquascapes' to be long term, but often end up getting bored of them or not happy and just change it!
Ohh I see. :D I am goin to sign up anyway, I was just curiious as to how it was going to differ much from the actual forums because that hadn't really been explained.
Cheers guys ;)
You can get tubs/bins etc from places like Tesco, Argos and Wilkinsons. Some of them hold 70l or so, they would be suitable. Move the filter/heater over and keep in darkness.
I was also watching this, I had the window open ready to bid and everything but I got distracted, forgot about it and remembered about a second after it sold! I was so frustrated.
Advantages to tanks with lids:
- Fish can't jump out as easily
- Heat is kept in more easily
- If you have cats, children etc it helps
- Stops insects and stuff getting in
I'm sure theres a load more advantages but they are the main ones I could think of. Needless to say, many people hae...
UKAPS should definately make a sticky somewhere with a dictionary of useful links. I know they already have one on the main site but they should update it more.
It was definately one of the best, if not the best issue I've got, and I've got about 30 issues. Like Aaron said, the product guide was really good, and the rest of the planted tank section. The focus on fish was also a good one this month.
I haven't managed to read all of it yet, but it's...
mine come today, great issue. i especially liked the article on tom messengers tank, nice one mate.
i'm looking forward to next months issue already! (we get to have a peek at your new tank, george ;))
I don't hae a link, but if you search on the PFK website George did a video blog of a step-by-step setup some time ago, and described how to plant some of the plants.
...or you could always ask in the Plants forums if you're ever confused. ;)
I mostly read the planted tank articles and some of the fish articles/maybe some others that interest me aswell.
I definately think it's a great idea for more people from this forum to submit. I know this might be a bit humerous considering that i'm not even average compared to some of the guys...
personally, i don't find 30cm too limiting. it all depends on the other dimensions, but i think ti should be okay. what i find realy annoying is when tanks don't have enough height, i think that's a bit more important, especially with what you're planning to do. even a cube would be good for...
i do the same, just chuck in a bit of hot and cold from the taps until it feels right to the touch. i doun't actually check the temp before putting the water into the tank, which is quite bad but i've never had any problems.
Yeah, a black background will help a fair bit. You can pickup a nice one for a few quid at Aqua Essentials.
Just kind of put plants in front of it. Speaking from experience, I know it is quite intrusive but it can be done. As Paulo said, his journals are a perfect example.
How about breeding shrimp, but like bumblebee shrimp or something, a bit less common but still cheap?
I like the idea of breeding Guppies, but you would really need another tank for that because they can get out of hand unless you keep the population down, and even then you could only have...
Hahaha, that's it then!
I've never actually said it aloud before (except maybe to myself like a weirdo ) so I wasn't sure.Looks like I was right :D
I think you could base your scape on both of them. It won't turn out exactly like whichever one you pick anyway.
In terms of easiness to do, I'd say no.2 though.
I haven't heard from everyone, but I'm sure you'll alllet me know if there's any problems.
Thanks to everone who participated, I think it went well! Hopefully next year we'll have a few more people take part.
:D
Thanks again guys :) really helpful of you
Again, if there's anyone else that doesn't mind, even just a 'feel free to use photos from my posts' would be fine.
Thanks aaron, I'll take a look at your posts and see if there's anything that I could use.
Behold - that might come in handy, at the moment I'm just taking anything and everything to be honest. Thanks!
Thanks again everyone, I'm always looking for more photos. Even if it's just a 'feel free to...
I know I've talked about this a million times but I've decided to go ahead and make a resource-type-thing on all aspects of fiskeeping and planted tanks.
I'm not sure on what exactly the content of the site will be, but at the moment I'm looking for photos. Just any fish-related photos that...
Well if money is no object, get a custom built opti-white tank! Something maybe 70 x 40 x 40 with a nice cabinet - the works.
There's loads of filters, heaters and lighting about - just take a look at Aqua Essentials and The Green Machine, our two sponsors for an insight.
As far as CO2...
^ I noticed that with regards to the placings. I was looking at some of them thinking ''are you looking at the same scape as I am?'' because I think there were better scapes than some of the higher ranked ones.
^ I'll take a look at them, thanks. Only problem is, all of the fish shops I've ever been to only ever seen to stock the 'bread and butter' Gouramis, I've never even seen Sparkling or Chocolates in the flesh.
Great! I've heard good things about them and they are so cheap. Their site is so hard to navigate though.
They also don't seem to have as much selection as they used to if I remember?
I've been researching Sri Lanka, Cherry Barbs, habitat, Crypts, everything for ages. Not so much Gourami biotopes though, because that's just a new idea.
So, for ages I've been wanting to set up a biotope of Sri Lanka, whith Crypts and maybe Aponogeton Crispus. Mainly because I love Crypts - they're my favourite plants and Cherry Barbs seem like pretty cool fish.I also love the idea of making a natural enviroment.
However, I am now also...
Oh, I've seen that tank on your blog before! It's got one of the best hardscapes I've ever seen. I think It'll look even better when the plants fill in more and there's more height to them.
Put 'em on the pan with some chips.
No, seriously. I just put them in another tank (most likely my sisters tank, that's the dumping ground). I've never taken any fish to a shop. I just wouldn't know what to say - ''can you take these fish for me''. I would feel guilty and stuff.
It depends what plants you want to keep. Plants such as ferns, anubias, crypts and mosses would be fine without co2 injection and just easycarbo but crypts would definately benefit from a nutrient rich substrate such as aquasoil because they are heavy root feeders.
Loads of people have open tops, even though I have never tried it for a number of reasons.
I'm not sure about your lights but usually you can attatch them to the side of the tank with a clip or something? They'd be fine above open water if they're attatched properly. Failing that yhou could...
What plants do you have? It might be an idea to prune them if they are too overgrown etc and remove any leaves with loads of algae.
I would say first get your dosing right, but I can't really help with that.
Your water is probably/cloudy/dirty and has surface scum becaus eyou don't have enough...
I think it's a great idea to print out a load of our stuff, leaflets, articles, everything and just let the public have at 'em. They would love that.
I know UKAPS tries to stay away from selling blah blah but maybe we could sell a few tool kits and other exclusive merchandise that we have to...
I don't know... I don't think it would be very good for them because as you said, they need night and day to photosynthesise and respire.
If there's livestock in the tank though, they need night to rest so...yeah. :)
Re: FoF - Raising the bar even higher next year
I oally aree RE he venue. I don' know exacly where it was, but it was some random place too far away for me to go.
If it was in London or something, I think a lot more people would be able to make it, both from this forum and from other...
I would assume soap isn't exactly good for your tank, whether it be for the fish, plants or both but it's better than having chemicals or whatnot on your hands.
I don't bother washing my hands before putting them in the tank unless I have something on them, like sauce or something then I just...
I think you would have problems with only excel when having 4wpg. I think there's these 11w/9w lights called arc pods or something, aqua essentials sell them. a couple of those would be okay.
I like journals with all of the details because I like to see all of the plants that are used, fish, stats, how the scape has evolved and the original hardscape etc, just to give me inspiration and more knowledge.
I think journals are more for long-term kinda scapes, whereas final photos are...
It's probably died and the other fish have finished it off. That's hapened to me before. It you have a really good look then you could find a body or something, but it might have already been eaten or whatever.
Have youchecked around the tank? I know Neons aren't known for jumping but...it's...
There's no doubt about it that anyone on this forum would recommend ADA Aquasoil as the best substate. That's available from both our sponsors too!
You should ask in the Substrate section for more information
As far as heating goes, what do you wanna know? I don't think undergravel heating or...
For inspiration and such the Nature Aquarium books by Takeshi Amano are great. They're on sale from Aqua Essentials, one of our sponsors. PFK is good too.
Apart from that, you'll find all you need on this forum and on other websites! Off the top of my head a few good websites are:
CAU Aqua...
Although big fish aren't really used in the planted tank scene, I think it depends on the species.
I think your reed fish will be okay with plants because I've seen a member on another forum with these in their planted tank without mention of any problems. I would guess the Balas would be okay...
