Crypts are by far my favourite plant!
  3. T

    South American Biotope

I think they might be called 'almond' leaves or something. I've seen them on eBay, sold for Bettas and Gourami.
  4. T

    New challenges...

I can't wait for this feature! Biotopes are my favourite thing. The tank that I'm planning to do now is goin to be a biotope. This will hopefully increase the number of biotopes entered into IAPLC, it's too scarce for my liking!

Group shipping buy for Manzanita driftwood from Tom Barr

I can't either - it can always be sent to you though! ;)

Group shipping buy for Manzanita driftwood from Tom Barr

So, shall we start a list of who definately wants some and how many bits, what size/shape etc. Thomas McMillan: (not sure how many) branchy bits, 20-40cm.

Group shipping buy for Manzanita driftwood from Tom Barr

That's true I guess... and come to think of it, I'm not one of them!
  8. T

Group shipping buy for Manzanita driftwood from Tom Barr

I'd be intetested in some smaller bits (less than 50cm). How about Tom sends the wood to a founder, and we hold a sort of 'UKAPS Auction' to raise a bit of money?

    60cm Iwagumi

I like it :D the only thing I would say is that the left two rocks dont' quite look right to me.

    Aquascaping a triangular tank

I think your best option is to go mound style.
  11. T

120cm - The Crypt Eternal (preview)

I thought this was meant to be long-term, George? Was this just a 'tester' and the next scape in this tank will be a more long-term alternative? I for one was surprised by the layout! I thought you would go with something similar to 'The Shade' or the Asian scape with the Peal Gourami that I...

    Aquascaping a triangular tank

I remember George scaping a triangular tank for someone a few years ao. Search on Tropical Fish Forums and take a look at that for ideas. It seems as though you'll have a bit too much free space in the centre. Maybe go for a jungle style?
  13. T

120cm - The Crypt Eternal (preview)

Re: 120cm, 370 litre preview I got my PFK today aswell. I didn't expect it to look like it does, but it looks amazing! The photo you posted here looks a lot more mature, it'd be nice to see some more recent photos.
  14. T

    terracota stick

I haven't looked, but maybe try eBay? I also saw an online shop selling them some time ago, I think it might've been the old Greenline but I'm not sure if they still do. Why not just get some smaller wood? Aqua Essentials has some pretty small Tropica Tree Roots, if you ask for small bits then...

If you had a 90x35x45 what would you do...

That second one looks amazing! I can't wait to see this one plants, it's gonna be one to watch. ;)
  16. T

If you had a 90x35x45 what would you do...

If the rocks aren't very big... I'd say opposing. I don't know why, I just think it would look better considering you don't hae any large rocks.
  17. T

    Petrified Wood

I remember Dan Crawford using it in a nice scape, I just had a quick look and can't find the post but it's there somewhere. If I remember it was called "--- Wilderness" or something along those lines. I don't think it leeches any tannins.
  18. T

    Rate my aquascape

Ha, it does aswell ;) please not Graham Norton, though. I can't stand him.
  19. T

    Rate my aquascape

You've got some good hardscape there. I'm not sure it's placed in the best position, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm sure soomeone else will be along do give advice soon enough. I would say the rocks are a little too big though. Is this your first aquascape or attempt at growing plants...

A mix of gravel + sand in tank

It has been done before. It looks fine on an aesthetical point of view, but if you're the die-hard aquascaper then I wouldn't advise it. In terms of tips, try to get quite a small grade gravel, and a similar sort of colour to the sand otherwise it'd just look really odd and artificial
  21. T

    Bornea Driftwood not sinking!!!!!!!!

Aquarium silicone, superglue or even cable ties etc are fine. I think wood will sink eventually, some bits just take an age to do so.

    Critique on change of scape

if this scape turns out anything like that last mock up, it should be one to watch. looks to be great i'd be looking for a bit of needle if and when you're ready :)
  23. T

    Coal

nope, ever seen it being used. i'm sure it could make a nice scape if used properly
  24. T

    iwagumi style, cruel to fish?

not only do they tend to jump, but they breed like rabbits. don't mix the sexes unless you have about ten other tanks spare
  25. T

    New tank - 4ft

I much prefer jungle scapes. I think it will look proper class in such a big tank too. Nice fish choice!
  26. T

    iwagumi style, cruel to fish?

As said, I would get a good shoal of something like a Rasbora or Danio. They swim in sparse rivers in the wild, and are top-dwelling which shows how confident they are. Tetras have been used in iwagumis before, but I think it's important to have at least a bit of cover, like a large rock they...

    Optiwhite iwagumi.

This one is doing it for me http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/8721/dscn0329nj8.jpg I think you should definately go for more than just HC. I think it'll look ten times better with a bit of hairgrass. It'll add that bit more height to it that it needs, rather than really tall bulky rocks and just...

Don't use massive rocks like that, just little ones.
  30. T

    Critique on change of scape

You know I'm a big fan of your scape, looking forward to this next one! I definately think your style would benefit from some rocks like Gareth said. Just maybe a few dotted strategically around the foreground outskirts and then maybe some gravel to get a natural look. I'll be watching the...

    Ideas for my tank

First off, remove the plants from the pots and get rid of the rockwool surrounding the roots. Then seperate the plants into plantlets, trim the roots back a little and plant them in the substrate. Get soem liquid ferts and c02. Bobs ya uncle ;)
  33. T

Where in a scape is c. helfri best suited?

If you're having a wall of stems, I would say in the corners. I've got it in my minds eye and it doesn't look right in the centre ;)
  34. T

    terracotta pots are fine, yeah
  35. T

    Can Bigger Wood Look Good?

Re: Big Wood Viable? Did you just pick it up off the floor? It needs to be dry and you need to make sure that all of the bark/rotting stuff is off. Give it a good scrub and a soak.
  37. T

    iwagumi or natural/jungle style

I would say the jungle style any day. Also, as said above, there's way more room for mistakes, and it's also way more achieveable IMO for someone with less experience.
  38. T

    Critique needed please!

That's so true about the hardscape and becoming hysterical. I find if you just throw something together, without having much of an idea then it works, whereas if you plan it too vigorously then it doesn't turn out as good. Also, if you look at it too much then you end up not liking it so if you...

    Critique needed please!

Re: Critique needed please!efinateut that You've got it in one! Looks really different, but as said different is good and it has that special something for me. Definatelygets the thumbs up from me. I don't see a big problem with the wood facing the way it does, it could work but that doesn't...
  41. T

    Critique needed please!

It looks a bit...weird to me. I think it would definately be better if you went for a more island scape, e.g. the wood positioned how it is, but more central and together, rocks holding them in place on top of and around the base Also, as has been said, the left piece is kind of distracting...

    where to get quality wood

^ Just type in 'bogwood' to the search bar on ebay.co.uk and loads of bogwood clumps will come up - Last-Trading-Post is the seller, they have some nice cheap Redmoor sometimes. Apart from that, our two sponsors, Aqua Essentials and The Green Machine have loads of quality wood!
  43. T

    Wood Placement & Arrangment Questions?

I think it depends on what style you're aiming for. i.e. island, etc Look at George's articles, which are pinned to the Aquascaping forum. I think there's a good paragraph or two in one of those articles on wood/rock/whatever placement.
  44. T

    Shakkie......a blast from my past.

Oh! Oh! I think I've seen this on TFF - didn't you do one called Soar aswell? (I secretly prefer that one. :D)
  45. T

    Help with aquascape...

I agree with George on this one, surprisingly. I wouldn't normally give advice like that but I actually think it would look real nice! OR What about just having a HC foreground, loose the rocks, loose the sand path and do something similar to the left-hand side but on the right? OR How about...
  46. T

How to scape a room divider?

I think your best bet is an iwagumi. Have a look at The Green Machine's ten footer - that's viewable from both sides.
  47. T

    Scaping thoughts/help

I think it'll be hard to get a good island style going with the plants you have. How about a jungle-style scape? e.g. get more anubias/federns/mosses/crypts/swords/vallis, maybe a few stems? A few bits of nice branchy Redmoor?
  48. T

    Where to get wood?

Cool, thanks guys. One question though... I'm no tree expert -how do you tell an Oak or whatever tree from any other, or am I jsut being stupid?
  49. T

    Where to get wood?

I don't really travel around much to places where there would be wood... There are parks and 'woods' around here but I've always been reluctant to use wood that you can just pick up from parks or wherever. So if you soak it in boiling water a couple of times and disinfect it a few times then...

    Where to get wood?

I'm always on the lookout for nice wood, especially when I see a nice scape somewhere and want to do something similar with the hardscape but can never seem to find 'the right wood'. I know theres AE/TGM/MA/other fish-related shops/eBay but is there anywhere else that I could get hold of...

    New scape in the works.

I like UG, so that's a good idea. What ya mean you got your fingers burnt last time? I'm a big fan of low-maint too. Let us know how it goes! PS - I'd be interested in the ferns if you decide to sell up :)

Wow, that's real unique! Nice one, can't wait to see it planted up.

    Redmoor wood

I don't think you're gonna find anywhere that sells Redmoor wood that cheaply. The only places I know of are our sponsors, Aqua Essentials and The Green Machine. Both sell individual bits and by size. You can get some bits that are cheap, but others are overpriced. You've just got to keep an eye...

    amano at his best.

I've seen most of the videos like this, but not this one. It's definately the best one - some great scapes. i like how it showed the hardscape of his home tank too, haven't seen that before. The music with those photos just makes you wanna cry! :D

    New scape in the works.

Yeah, TGM have some individual redmoor, try them. It's not thamoret I have anything agains Iwagumi's... I just think they've been done. It's not original anymore, plus they are hard to get right, as has been said. I don't like rocks as much as wood like you said Garuf, and I just think the...

Please don't do an iwagumi :(
  58. T

    New scape in the works.

Should look good. The only thing I don't like about the example you gave is that it doesn't look that 'grown in'. The plants are really low and it doesn't work for me. (Not your paint example, the photo of the actual scape.) Your Paint exampleould looks good though, should be great.
  59. T

    New scape in the works.

Paint? MS Paint? Well I never. If you ever do find wood like that, make sure there's a bit for me ;)
  60. T

    New scape in the works.

Blyxa would be good I think. Being original is good, but there's nothing wrong with following the trend if it looks good and you like it. Especially in this hobby, most things seem to have been done at least once.
  61. T

    New scape in the works.

Sexy. :P No, seriously I'm a big fan of your scapes so I know it'll be great. If you just keep the hardscape like that and get the planting how it was when you did that scape with the french name then it'll be awesome for sure. For planting, I think you've got a good idea in mind. The mix of...

    An Idea

^ It's funny you sears ahould post a link like that. I was used to keep stick insects about a gazillion years ago and thought that maybe I could keep them again in the top half and shrimp or something in the bottom half. I don't know how they would fair with the plants though.
  63. T

    An Idea

Wow, there's so many choices! I knew Anubias could but not Bacoupa or Bolbitis. So the list now stands at:s. Hygro Polysperma Crypts Anubias Bacoupa Carolina for plants that could grow out of water. I'm not sure that I'm gonna go ahead with this idea anymore, but it's always useful to have...

    my first aquascape 33l (update 22-dec )

Re: my first aquascape 33l nice tank! I think a sand path could definately work, but only if it's done properly. It's quite hard to do sand paths so that they are effective, so I would only do it if you are certain that you can get it spot on. If not, the tank looks brilliant without a sand...

    An Idea

I'm always looking for inspirationan and brainstorming new ideas for aquascapes that I can create etc and just had this idea that I think would be interesting. I'm thinking of having an open-top tank and creating an aquascape where the plants grow above the water and out of the tank. I reckon...

80cm - Playing with layout in Photoshop.

I love it when you make aquascape designs on photoshop! It's so inspirational. Love how it's looking and plant choice sems good too. ave you got stocking in mind?

What's your most favourite aquascape of all time?

Have you got any other images of that second tank? Or is there a journal or something? It looks interesting.
  69. T

What's your most favourite aquascape of all time?

Yeah, so if you had to choose just one aquascape as your most favourite of all time, which would it be?
  70. T

    Mini landscaping rocks

Yeah, I've done it millions of times. I use two hammers - use one pointy end to chisel and the other to hammer. Some of them are quite hard to break through though.
  71. T

    Open foreground or planted foreground?

I think it depends on the scape and the feel you are trying to achieve, but generally speaking I prefer sand.
  72. T

    Help me improve my scape.

I think your scape looked much better when you replaced the existing wood with Redmoor (on page 11 or something of your journal). Maybe try that again?

    sand forground critique

I think it's maybe a tiny bit too steep. When substrate is too steep i think it just takes away that sense of depth, whereas if it's just slightly sloped then that's perfect. Just make sure it's even and level though.
  74. T

    Help me improve my scape.

Hmm... Hairgrass maybe? Or Blyxa? I don't know... I can't really think of anything that won't grow too large for the space. You're gonna be a bit limited on choices i think. I love the scape how it is, I just think it's a matter of time before you get it spot on. I agree that something isn't...

    I really need Ideas

The best thing to do first is learn how to grow plants, and you're doing that so it's a step in the right direction. As far as aquascaping goes, it's just a matter or trial and error and finding your style. I found that it was good to start by copying other people's aquascapes, they will evolve...
