    All Pond Solutions 2000 EF

I would be surprised if it created a whirlpool, so I dont think you need to worry there. I'll add that I had a 1000 filter of theirs and it was great until I dropped the head from only about 10cm above the ground and it must have cracked it internally somewhere as it proceded to empty the tank...

    Shhhhh please!

If you have to have very high surface water turnover to stop the fish gasping then you probably have the CO2 to high. If you reduce the surface agitation, reduce the co2 accordingly :) Sam

    What Goes In Your Filter

I use 100% sponge in all my filters as I don't see the need for anything else. Might as well save yourself some money. I don't use carbon as to start with and if replaced it will remove ferts.to keep the flow up I tend to have at least one media basket empty if not two depending on the tank size...

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

Just thought I would follow this one up and say that the one in my marine tank has been running for several months now and I think the initial noise issues were just while it 'bedded in'. Eheim Classic 2217

I've used a 2211 for years and never had a problem with it. The only slight annoyance with the classic range is that they lack and way of detaching the hoses so you end up having to use double taps which are 10quid each, which makes the whole filter a lot more expensive. For similar money you...

Yeh, I agree. I doubt there is any need for the additional bio filtration, and if all you really want is flow, just stick to the pump :) Sam

    I give up on Glass

I just swapped from glass to plastic and the difference in flow is remarkable. Its not a large tank, but the surface has gone from millpond to force 4 gale. Well worth it. Glass looks nice, but if that's at the detriment of the plants and good growth, it ain't worth it in my book. Sam

    Fluval fx5

Everything I've heard about them has been that its noisy-ish. Not thunderous but definitely noticeable when running. Out of interest, how big is the tank? You might be better off with a smaller filter and then a powerhead or two for flow. Sam

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

Let me know what you find if out, if thats ok, as I've got another one wanting to go into my planted tank but the risk of noise is putting me off at the moment. If it can be reduced that would be excellent. Cheers Sam

    How noisy is your Koralia/Resun?

For my 250lt tank I use the kitchen mixer tap and one of these http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?a ... =266993459 You have to tighten it quite a lot or the pressure causes it to leak, but it does make 50% w/c even on my 250lt a doddle. For smaller tanks I just use a bucket or 5lt bottle...

    Aquamanta EFX300 Review

Thanks for the review, been looking at the 600 for a while but my local MA don't seem to be able to run on eon a tank at the shop, so I was left wondering how noisy it was for a 2200lph filter. Filter materials

You cant have a go at someone if they don't know the facts, so only right I point people in the right direction :) The whole ethics topic is one that I'm sure raises many questions in the hobby. Where do you draw the line? Who knows. Sam
  24. T

    Filter materials

In a word yes. They are being drained and the peat removed for compost and as a fuel and Im sure other things. I wont get on my high horse about it, I'm sure google will tell you how valuable they are for wildlife and what damage is being done by removing them. Peat bogs - are areas of very...
  25. T

    Filter materials

I'd caution against peat, not only does it affect the water chemistry by lowing pH, which I guess might be the point of you adding it, but as a product for an aquarium its collection and use has to be questioned. Why destroy peat bogs just to lower the pH in your home tank? Just my 2p worth. Sam

    Filter media for idiots (me)!

People will disagree with me, but in my book - no. There is nothing those fancy and expensive media can do that sponge can't so save yourself a small fortune and use coarse sponge first and fine sponge second. Planted tanks typically have an oversize filter to increase flow so you can get lots...

External for 25l tank advice needed

Only trouble with the eheim 2213 is it lacks connectors to allow you to remove the pipes easily for cleaning and such. You can buy the double tap connectors but they aren't cheep, would add £20 to the price if not more. Sam
  29. T

External for 25l tank advice needed

Or the tetratec ex600? I've got one running on my 12" cube 27lt, works a treat. Or the ex400 if you dont mind importing it. http://www.aquaristic.net/shop.php/sid/ ... anufac.940 I've used this company before for an eheim 2211 would use them again. Sam
  30. T

    Which filter? New to externals.

Typically we planted people would be looking for 10x the tank turn over per hour, so in your case a filter rated at 1800lph or more. That's going to be tricky to be honest, especially if you want it silent. If you have space to have two filters, then two tetratex ex1200's would be good which...

lily pipes - Aqua magic, cal aqua or other?

Yep, get cheap is my view. Ok the ADA and Cal Aqua ones look proper lovely, but for the price its not worth it in my book. You probably get better flow characteristics with the top range stuff, again not worth the extra money personally. Sam PS - Also, if I was gonna spend the money on a bit...

External filter for 90 Litre planted tank?

The eheim is ok but expensive for what you get flow wise, if it were me I'd get the tetra or new maidenhead filter which I'm told is just the upgraded aqua one filter wth MA branding. If it's silent it could do well the planted gobby as the 600 I think is rated at 2200lpg
  38. T

Connecting Fluval FX5 to 17mm lily pipes?

I cant for the life of me find a link to it, but my local MA has a hose connector that has staggered sizes and you just cut off the part that fits smaller hoses to the point at which the hose size you need is at the end. Sorry that really doesn't make sense, its a pond connector. Sam

    Glassware

I've just swapped over my green eheim intake and outlet for glassware on my work tank and have noticed an instance reduction in flow around the tank. Just wondered if this is due to the small intake slits not drawing in as much water or is it just that with a spray bar the small holes mean...

Bought 2nd hand Tetratec EX700, how to clean?

I loved this when I saw the review, quite honestly I'm amazed the didn't thin of it sooner!! I even thought of it when I was looking at the korila's, which are just so bulky in the tank IMHO. Just a shame I didn't patent the idea!!! Sam

    Eheim 2180

I think the 2078 is the new version of the 2080 if so, I've got the 2080 and its pretty heavy. Maidenhead Aquatics have also brought out their own range of externals, the AquaManta EFX range. The 600 has a reported 2200lph flow and from what I've seen of them in the shop they aren't massive...

Noooo, broken my glass intake :(

Providing the filter is still working it should be fine for a few days. Its the main reason I always get cheapo glassware, just far to easy to break, and ADA is to expensive to have a spare set! Not much you can do really, it's always a risk with glass I suppose, I feel your pain...

    TetraTec EX 2400 - review

Eheim are expensive, but you get what you pay for. I may however in the future not bother with such a large filter and instead just use a powerhead for circulation. Big pumps just mean one thing = noise. Sam
  65. T

    Smallest Circulation pump

I only mentioned the +3000 as thats what I used, wasn't suggesting that you get one! Dare say it be ridiculously powerful on your tank too! :lol I use one of these for water changes and has both an intake and outlet, so you can attach tubing :) http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalo ...
  66. T

    Smallest Circulation pump

Could you find a way of having the pump outside the tank? I.e. in the cabinet? I've got an eheim compact +3000 running a 'closed loop' on my 4ft, you just need some tubing and spare intake and outtake, both of which in my case are glass :) It sucks in water and pump sit back out again around...

How about the eheim 2211? I run one on my 25lkt cube and its perfect, but you'd probably have to import it and the euro exchange rate is rubbish at the moment. Though I guess the ex400 would also be worth looking at, cheaper too. If its anything like the ex600 I have it'll be a great filter...

  69. T

How much L/H would I aim for?

Yeh providing the fish can cope and you're not literally blowing plants and substrate around the tank, the more turnover the better really. I've got a 1000lph (that's the rated turn over don't forget) filter running on my 30x30x60cm 60lt tank. Sam
