If you have to have very high surface water turnover to stop the fish gasping then you probably have the CO2 to high. If you reduce the surface agitation, reduce the co2 accordingly :) Sam

Sounds like either the pump is still running or the 'off' valves aren't closed completely. Sam

I use 100% sponge in all my filters as I don't see the need for anything else. Might as well save yourself some money. I don't use carbon as to start with and if replaced it will remove ferts.to keep the flow up I tend to have at least one media basket empty if not two depending on the tank size...

I just swapped from glass to plastic and the difference in flow is remarkable. Its not a large tank, but the surface has gone from millpond to force 4 gale. Well worth it. Glass looks nice, but if that's at the detriment of the plants and good growth, it ain't worth it in my book. Sam

Everything I've heard about them has been that its noisy-ish. Not thunderous but definitely noticeable when running. Out of interest, how big is the tank? You might be better off with a smaller filter and then a powerhead or two for flow. Sam

For my 250lt tank I use the kitchen mixer tap and one of these http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?a ... =266993459 You have to tighten it quite a lot or the pressure causes it to leak, but it does make 50% w/c even on my 250lt a doddle. For smaller tanks I just use a bucket or 5lt bottle...

Thanks for the review, been looking at the 600 for a while but my local MA don't seem to be able to run on eon a tank at the shop, so I was left wondering how noisy it was for a 2200lph filter. If its as quite as you say, it could be a real contender, as more filter in that range are to noisy...

I'd caution against peat, not only does it affect the water chemistry by lowing pH, which I guess might be the point of you adding it, but as a product for an aquarium its collection and use has to be questioned. Why destroy peat bogs just to lower the pH in your home tank? Just my 2p worth. Sam

Only trouble with the eheim 2213 is it lacks connectors to allow you to remove the pipes easily for cleaning and such. You can buy the double tap connectors but they aren't cheep, would add £20 to the price if not more. Sam

I cant for the life of me find a link to it, but my local MA has a hose connector that has staggered sizes and you just cut off the part that fits smaller hoses to the point at which the hose size you need is at the end. Sorry that really doesn't make sense, its a pond connector. Sam

I think the 2078 is the new version of the 2080 if so, I've got the 2080 and its pretty heavy. Maidenhead Aquatics have also brought out their own range of externals, the AquaManta EFX range. The 600 has a reported 2200lph flow and from what I've seen of them in the shop they aren't massive...

4500lph on a 125lt tank would be a bit high to be honest. I would go for something around thr 1000lph mark, esp if you already got a 500 and 600 running on it. Sam

Eheim are expensive, but you get what you pay for. I may however in the future not bother with such a large filter and instead just use a powerhead for circulation. Big pumps just mean one thing = noise. Sam

How about the eheim 2211? I run one on my 25lkt cube and its perfect, but you'd probably have to import it and the euro exchange rate is rubbish at the moment. Though I guess the ex400 would also be worth looking at, cheaper too. If its anything like the ex600 I have it'll be a great filter...

Think most people swap the fluval piping over to clear PVC tubing, as you say its pretty ugly. Try here, they have loads of different types, perhaps get a few meters of a few types and see which one works best? Its not expensive stuff if you're only using it for the filter tubing...

Yeh providing the fish can cope and you're not literally blowing plants and substrate around the tank, the more turnover the better really. I've got a 1000lph (that's the rated turn over don't forget) filter running on my 30x30x60cm 60lt tank. Sam

The quickest way to cycle a tank is run the filter for it on another tank for a few weeks, although I appreciate that is not always possible :) Sam
