no HC growth in 3 weeks.. confusing.. any help?

Your lights are on for quite a long time, I would cut back to 6-8hrs. Upping the co2 if you are able might also help. All this said I've struggled with HC of the years, I've managed a carpet a couple fof times, but more often than not I get exactly the same result as you - no grown and it...

do i just rinse new imported plants? whats the process

You can give them a rinse just to be sure you've washed off any potential residues, but to be honest just get them in the tank, there shouldn't be too much to worry about :) Sam

    Moss Balls

They are supposed to be very easy to grow. Not a moss as well, but an algae shaped into a ball. Not many people use them as a far as I see, as tend to be difficult to use in scaping, but if you're just looking for something for the shrimp they'd probably be ideal. Sam

A problem with alternanthera reineckii 'purple'

Lots of plants produce aerial roots, but alternanthera reineckii is particularly good at it, its just the way it grows, not much you can do about it unfortunately, apart from the scissors as has been suggested. Sam :)

    Yep definitely mondo grass.

    Nymphea Stellata

I don't even bother to bury it, just leave it where needed, the roots soon hold it in place. They can flower but you need to let it develop leaves that reach the surface before it'll flower. There was a thread on here recently about a lily flowering in a tank. Sam

    Newbie with freshly planted Glosso

IMO yes, any co2 system that's based on a 96g or smaller cylinder is only really going to be effective on the smallest of nanos. This would be a better bet. Cylinder should last 6-8 weeks on a 25lt tank. viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7696 Sam

    plants for a fluval edge

Cryps sounds like a good idea, you can get a very good 'jungle' with them alone. They don't come in vibrant colours, but they aren't all green, like Cryptocoryne wendtii, although this might be a bit big for the edge tank. Trouble is, anything very red is going to need very good lighting...
  12. T

    No substrate

Dont see why not. The material in the pots when you buy it is just mineral wool and only really there to anchor the plant, as its inert from what I know. Providing the water have plenty of ferts I think it'd work fine. Whenever I've grown cryps they tend to produce there aerial roots anyway...

    Help out of my depth!

Only one of those I'd been a bit envious of is the E.tennellus, which does much better under good lighting. The rest should be fine on almost any tank :) Sam
  14. T

    Why is this happening?

It can take a bit to get going so give it time. You're lighting is suite low though so that could be adding to the problem. It probably wont be a major issue, but I would have the CO2 coming on 2hrs before the lights so the levels build up enough, that is of course unless you've got excellent...

    Sluggesh growth after rescape

Interesting thoughts, thanks all. It could be a dormant or adjusting period, had the same thing with HC in the past. I can see new roots and runners growing in the substrate, so its getting there, just slowly! Got a lot of stick off my work mates for getting the HC looking perfect and then...

    Sluggesh growth after rescape

Hi all, I re-scaped my work tank a few months back. The HC it had in it was going great guns, but since the re-scape the dwarf hair-grass I replace it with has taken a good 8 weeks to properly establish and start growing? I've had this on other tanks after a re-scape. It seems that re-using...

what's the downside to using e. parvula as carpet plant?

    quick riccia question

I'm sure people have used a complete carpet of it before, not that I can bring to mind a specific scape. The trouble with riccia long term is that it needs lots of maintenance to retie it when its grown out of the original netting. If you're happy to do that every few weeks, go for it I say...

    Can I grown these plants?

Try and see? Its still not loads over such a small tank, but worth a try? Sam
  29. T

    Can I grown these plants?

Yeast CO2 will be ok on a 9lt tank. 1WPG is quite low though as suggested above. 4-6WPG would be better I think. A 20w desk lamp would be ideal I think. Sam

what is a good Low plant for the front of the tank.

I dont really think that exists unfortunately, all carpeting plants will grow over themselves to a certain extent and as its (relatively speaking) a very small area in a tank compared to the nature habitat, maintenance is inevitable. Sam
  36. T

    Carpeting Sagittaria Pusilus

No idea, impossible to say as it depends on the tank, and I've never grown it before myself. In lower light it could take a couple of weeks. The more you add the quicker it should fill out. Sam

    what happend to my plant?

    pogostamon helferi

Humm the typical fert problem with this plant relates to a lack of trace, which makes it turn white. As its turning brown I doubt its that. Moving to EI asap would rule out it being a fert problem. Sam
  48. T

    White leaves P. Helferi

You're actually quadrupling the trace there! Just leave it at 5g in 250ml (i.e. same concentration) but double the dose to 10ml :) What trace are you using? Sam

    Hemianthus micranthemoides

I would do it the same way you do any stems, plant it dense, then give it a good hair cut once its established, it should grow back even denser, but you'll have to keep on top of it, it does get that leggy look pretty quickly. Sam
  53. T

    Reccomend me some suitable plants....

With that setup you're looking at low light plants, so all the usually suspects would be ok :) things like anubias, some cryts, java ferns, mosses, etc. Hope that helps. Sam

    Sagittaria platyphylla

That's Glossostigma elatinoides or glosso for short (its quite a mouthful!) Its a demanding plant, well to get it to carpet anyway, needs plenty of light, co2 and nutrients. In low light tanks it tends to grow upwards. More info here http://www.tropica.com/productcard_1.asp?id=045A Sam
  61. T

    Sagittaria platyphylla

Have you see this? http://www.tropica.dk/productcard_1.asp?id=081 I've not had this one specifically, but in my experience there is no such thing as a dwarf sag, they all end up very very tall, well over the stated heights. We need a bit more info, like size of the tank, what kind of lighting it is (T5 or T8 and the make/model if possible), what ferts you're adding, filtration, the plants you've got. The more the better :) My feeling at the moment is a lack of light, but the HC seems to be bucking this theory...

Can you ID these plants please?

The best advice for this is to chuck in a load more plants, see how they grow and develop the scape from there. There is no substitute for first hand experience of how the plants grow, which I know takes time, but its well worth it. Also have a look at the journal section to see what other...

    Fissidens

To be fair to Aquatic Magic they are always (well for me anyway) very good about refunds if plants arrive in less than expected condition. As LD says their glassware and hardware goods are very good, which is generally what I use them for. Sam

    Plants from local fish shop

It shouldn't matter in that its inert and wouldn't do anything to the water. However try and remove as much as possible as it will restrict root growth and stops the roots getting to the nutrients in the substrate. Don't worry if you do end up removing some roots, you're supposed to cut the...

How do you trim HC Cuba?

Yeh give it a hair cut, but I don't think there is anything you can do about the trillions (I've counted ;)) of bits that float about. You have to be careful not to net out any fish at the same time, which Ive done in the past. Sam

  90. T

    Vallisneria spiralis

I woouldnt think it'll do any harm, the extra flow may actually be of some benefit as it replenishes the water immediately surrounding the leaves which is likely to be lower in ferts and CO2 with water laced with both :) Sam

Pogostemon Helferi - New growth is white

I get this, but find adding extra trace mix does the trick :) Sam
  92. T
