Ive got an 550D and its a great body, you only get a few extra features on the 600D, which for me didn't justify the extra cash. Got it at a good price second hand.
Sam
Agree with the better lens on an old body. I've got the D550 and am looking to get my first 'L' lens for better wildlife shots. Much better to upgrade the lens first and then the body. Lens' seem to hold their value better and for longer than bodies as well, so you could always resell a lens...
I was out the other night for work, carrying out some mist nest trapping at a National Trust gardens, and this was the last bat we caught.
Anyone what to guess what species it is?
I like the partical back lighting of the bat, which must have been someone elses flash going off at the same...
Yeh you're right about retounching it here and there but I haven't the first clue how to use photshop so that prob wont happen!
Scape? Who the hell knows!
Sam
Took this the other day whilst learning to identify sedges and rushes in north Wales. Its three photos stitched together using autostitch. I'm quite pleased with it and for no other reason than that I thought I might as well share :) it’s hopefully also an encouragement to others to take and...
Re: New toy - EOS550D. HD Vid tips?
I recently got the 550D, nice camera :) cant work out the video either really, focusing with a dslr is a nightmare!

Re: Three Rare bird's
John, John, John. When will you see sense and give me that 500mm of yours, you're clearly not using it properly if this is the best you can do ;) :P.
Sam
Sodding hell, John, the sharpness of the bird in flight is amazing! Having recently got a 550d and read far to much about lens, cameras and settings, I'm going to be geeky and ask what the settings where for these?
Sam
Interesting to hear you say that, it doesn't seem all that complicated from whats Ive read of it. Esp on smaller tanks.
Is that pearling from the macro algae?!?!?!
Sam
Lovely photos, looks like a bit to much PS for my taste in a few (I could be wrong though ;))
Are you going to enter the BBC countryfile photo comp? If not could I enter the dandelion head on your behalf?
Sam
This one is proper awesome, mate. Any chance I could have a copy of the original photo, I'd love a decent sized copy on my wall at work :)
Have you seen the BBC Countryfile photo comp? Wild and Wonderful is the theme, you can enter up to 4 photos, might be worth a punt...
That's why I've got mine going into my powerhead which is a closed loop outside the tank. No possibility of it building up inside that I wouldn't think and certainly not yet after several months of running it.
Sam
Dave,
Its not great quality due to the camera and low light and its not the swarm at its best, but hopefully gives you an idea of what it was like.
The clicks are the bat echolocation calls using a heterodyne bat detector.
Sam
You can say that again, Dave. I'm fortunate enough to be paid to look for wildlife and it never fails to amaze. Watching 119 bats swarming around a house in Exceter before they flew in to roost was something special.
Sam
Sodding hell (I wont swear this is a family friendly forum) it brings it home exactly what's going on out there when you see photos like that. My hat goes off to you and the rest of the people out there. Balls of steel mate, totally.
Look after yourself.
Sam
Just goes to show what kind of shots you can get even at home, apart from the camera, nothing there you couldn't do at home, with a few able mates.
Sam
Very nice, not seen as many aquatic plants flowering as this :) I tend to forget sometimes that just because they are aquatic it doesn't mean they cant flower!!
Sam
I think my problem when I tried emersed was to use HC and not give it a nutrient rich substrate! How do the anubias get nutrients, if they are not in the substrate? You adding anything to the water you spray they with?
Sam
Nice Dave, my only comment would be that the wood makes it look like you're looking at a scape from in amongst tree roots, like a natural Discus setup would be. But that seems to contradict with the lush green of the riccia and hairgrass? You going to put anything on the wood? Some moss would...
For me the auto setting look most real, but I guess Ive not seen the tank in the flesh, so it might not be the most true representation, but as a whole it look best to me.
