    Garden Plant ID's. Post here!

I have another one... Well, two  Sorry, large pic: http://deviant-uk.org/pics/uploads/IMG_20130529_120653.jpg Interested in what both of these are. I'm looking for a shrub to fill a gap in the garden, in a mostly shady spot. I like the small leaves of both of these two.

    Plant identification

It's hard to judge scale from the photo, but I think it could be correct. It should be pretty small and compact though. If you google image search for coral pellia, you can see a few comparison shots with regular pellia etc. One in particular looks similar to your photo.

    Low maintenance cold water plants?

Tropical setups just require an appropriate heater to maintain the water temp. Your average tropical tank will run at around 25 - 27 degrees centigrade, but this will depend on the fish you keep. If you already have cold water fish (ie white cloud minnows, goldfish etc) then not really worth...

    Micrantherum monte carlo

So you would say this would be OK in something on the lower light end of the scale, say 11w over 10 or 20 litres?
  10. Steve Smith

    Anubis nana.

Hi Ant. Welcome to UKAPS. Anubias have a rhizome, which is the thick root that the leaves grow off. If you have a reasonable amount of rhizome, a good few centimetres, you can cut it, but you need to use something sharp to make sure it's a clean cut. Also, anubias needs to be tied to rocks...

    Anyone tried these "exotic" species

Everything I've read about Buce is that it should be treated like Anubias, and tied to wood/rock. I'd love to give it a try :)

I was reading about this the other day. Looks like a nice creeping carpet plant :) I'm assuming it's more of a high light lover.

    Garden Plant ID's. Post here!

That's sort of appropriate, as I'm currently about 4 miles away from Kenilworth. Thanks again Darrel. As always, you are the fountain of knowledge :) I wonder if I could get it to grow in a wabi-kusa or something. I suspect it likes dry conditions if it tends to favour growing on walls. I...

I have another one :) This is growing on the wall outside work. It's been there for several years, spreading around here and there. I love it :) Untitled by Casa-Steve, on Flickr Any ideas what this is? (sorry for the blurry photo, it's windy outside!)

    Garden Plant ID's. Post here!

Excellent, thanks for that Darrel. I had a feeling it wasn't Hydrocotyle, but it really has that look. I'm thinking of transplanting it to a pot as it's been in this spot for about 5 years and that's as big as it's managed to get. I'll have a read around propagation etc.

Post your garden plant ID requests here! Thought it would be good to keep them separate from aquatic plant chat :) So, I'll start. Can anyone ID this plant that I have in the garden? It looks a lot like some sort of Hydrocotyle but I don't recall what it actually is. If memory serves, I...

I have very little experience with 1-2 grow, but everything I've heard suggests they can keep for a long time. Smallest Nymphaea species for aquarium use?

Just wondered what the smallest nymphaea species was that would be suitable for using in an aquarium. Googling smallest nymphaea I get Nyphaea thermarum. Not sure about whether this would be suitable though (for submersed growth).

    What plant is this?

    H. Polysperma can go pinky red, and has whitish veins on the leaves: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=hygrop ... 20&bih=989
  34. Steve Smith

    What plant is this?

Looks like a hygrophila to me. The difference in leaves is most likely because it's in the middle of adapting to to submerged growth, so the lower leaves are immerse growth still (and will probably die off).
  35. Steve Smith

    Staurogyne

Hey John. I'm growing this too and have the same thing. I'm wondering if it's changing form. I'm dosing Step 1, Special Shade and Brighty K, with injected CO2 and occasional Easy Carbo. It's got new growth growing from the crown but it's not enough to be able to see a difference yet.

    Bunches, potted, pads, cuttings?

Cuttings are usually fine with stem plants but potted gives you a stronger plant in my opinion. Sometimes you might not get the same amount from a potted plant, but I think that this isn't always the case. My preference is potted plants :) As for pads, that's usually things like mosses...

    Java ferns and moss

Java moss will indeed attach itself to wood/rough stone after a while. When a Java fern produces a lot of plantlets, it can be a sign that things aren't quite right. It will generally produce them anyway though. It's best to remove plantlets, as the mother plant will be diverting energy into...

    Can I split Cryptocoryne Balansae?

In that case, no I wouldn't attempt to split it. On the plus side, you see the little horn like growths. They are new plantlets growing by the looks of it. Once it establishes it should spread well :)
  48. Steve Smith

    Can I split Cryptocoryne Balansae?

Pogostemon Helferi or Marsilea Crenata; Carpeting

Pogostemon makes a nice carpet, but it can grow quite bulky. How big is your tank? Marsilea sort of looks like Glosso when it grows in, but is a very slow grower from past experience (though I don't think I grew it in the best of conditions). It would look smaller and quite neat :)

  65. Steve Smith

Have you seen a Crypt with only tall stems?

That looks like a lily of some sort to me? From the pictures, it looks like the leaf is set to roll open and flat, like a lily pad. I might be totally wrong though. Can you remember what the root/rhizome looked like? I believe lily's tend to be bulbs, but again I could be wrong :)

Buying good aquality plants in UK

what's the downside to using e. parvula as carpet plant?

It can get quite intertwined with itself, and then start growing ontop of itself. Thinning it out can help, but then that's quite difficult too as it forms long chains of plantlets which you have to be carful of when pulling it out (otherwise you end up in a bigger mess!).

Re: [WANTED] Looking for Staurogyne. Hehe. You kinda pinch them and pull them off the stem. If you look at the top of the stem you can see the newest leaves in the crown, as they are nice and lush and smaller than the rest of the leaves. You pinch them between your fingertips and tug them...

Re: [WANTED] Looking for Staurogyne. Hi Andy. It's similar to many stem plants. If you pinch out the new crown of leaves growing at the top of the stem it should spur the plant to bush out somewhat. This is also true with taller stems, where you cut them low down so they fork into two, where...

    poor quality java ferns

Well, the way I see it is that you'll have cut away most of the plant's nutritional uptake method, ie the leaves. So less nutrients would be absorbed until it starts to grow back. Obviously it depends on the setup. If theres lots of other plants in the tank, then probably not relevant :) I...

Cut the tops off, as Sam says. if you look at the stem of one of your P. helferi plants you can see nodes, where the leaves grow out of. Snip with sharp scissors just above one of these nodes. Then take the cutting and replant it (you might need to take of the bottom few leaves).

    Hemianthus micranthemoides

You'll find that HM spreads horizontally and vertically at the same time when it grows. It should form a nice bush! Just be careful you don't let it get too thick else you'll get die off of the lower stems. Just give it a good trim when it's looking too thick :)
