Often it's a piece of matte white card or some other material. People tend to play about with position, and even back lighting to get the effect they want. Often you'll find that the sheet of white card/plastic/whatever is at an angle leaning away from the tank towards the top to get a...
An indicator of how a combined show would potentially be more successful is the number of Aquatics shops that have branched out into reptiles. Most of my local places (including pets at home) sell reptiles/live food etc.
OK, if people want to discuss the good and bad about the contents of PFK magazine then please go discuss it with them on their own forum. I don't wish for UKAPS to get dragged into any slagging off of the publication. PFK has been a good friend to UKAPS, as can be seen by the number of our...
Deleted Nanocube's useless comments as blatantly someone registering to have a pop at PFK and nothing else constructive.
I'm wielding the mod stick good and hard.
Jesus. Quit bickering all of you. It's like reading the Daily Mail website comments section! Everyone seems to be jumping on their high horses. I don't see why PFK are getting dragged into this either.
Keep it civil or keep it shut.
I'm saving it for my lunch break... I had a flick through the Polish (I think) language version a few weeks back, loved the photography. Looking forward to having a read through.
Unsure really. Battery powered air pumps may help, but have you considered hiring a generator for the day?

One of the shows mentioned I think is local to me, and didn't sound especially good. I believe it was a Pet show of some sort, but aquatics wasn't featured very heavily I don't think.
That's a real shame. I really do think that they should look to how European shows are run and take some ideas from that. Vivarium, for example, was a great show and plenty to see.
I have a design for a hillstream tank which I'd like to try out. it's a variation of the river manifold design that's worked so well for people. My design would have raised floor siliconed in, of maybe an 3 or 4cm high. At one end the floor wood be egg crate/perforated some how and the other...
Are they tiny and white?
Planaria In Fish Tank | The Planted Aquarium Blog
Not a parasite, perhaps a nuisance and perhaps they were feeding on an already dead cory?
As Ian says, not a good idea. The bubbles from the air stone cause excessive surface movement which speeds up the process of gassing off the CO2 from the water.
If you feel the need to run the air pump, run it whilst lights are out but turn off before CO2. CO2 should come on and hour or so...
Turn off your filter for a short while to allow things to float to the surface and use a net to remove as much as you can. Won't work 100% but should help.
I don't think that's actually petrified wood. It looks a lot like the stone sold as petrified wood some years back, but I think its compressed sand or something like that.
If you don't wash it too vigorously, it should be OK. Real petrified wood is stone, and is a bit like flint in that it...
Well, the TMC tank and cabinets get favourable reviews from many here. ADA stuff is very good but has a brand tax really. NA tanks also get very good reviews.
Think about your budget and think about what sort of aquascape you would like to create. As you are new to aquascaping and plant...
It's a great looking scape. I like how Amano swans about like a superstar, as everyone around him is running about passing him things/wiping things down etc. And then how, at the end of the day, there are just two guys left finishing off.
Shared on the UKAPS Facebook page :)
I get what you're saying, but aside from the delivery charge I've come to the decision that I should just stick with a cheap off the shelf tank for now, and then try and put funds towards something bigger and better when I move house next year. So I'll probably go for a Clearseal or something...
Well, unfortunately I think I'm out of the running. Great prices and the photos looked good, but the delivery costs are a little prohibitive for me right now.
I read from that that they'll be delivered by hand as it were, so the delivery cost is probably pretty reasonable. Unfortunately I'm...
Nope! I *think* I submitted that form for a delivery quote, but I'm not 100% sure it worked! If I don't hear anything by the end of the week, I'll try again. £120 is great, but if delivery is going to be £50 I'd be having second thoughs
In hind sight, I think 20cm is a bit low! The tank will basically be viewable from the front and top. The chest of drawers it will be on is only 70cm high, so it'll be quite low.
I'm thinking maybe 30cm, maybe a little more. I'm just trying to get the proportions right and my math is pretty...
Bit of a dredge. I'd be interested to know peoples opinions on the height of a tank I'm considering at the moment. I have a space of 70x40cm so trying to decide on the height. Having seen George's shallow tank in the flesh, I'm taken by the idea of a shallow tank. But, how shallow, when you...
Congrats Pard/Gill :)
I liked them all. It was funny when we were all working on our scapes... We couldn't resist giving each other advice/a point of view - completely forgetting that it was a contest  We gave ourselves 20 minutes each to complete so I think we all did pretty good :)
Well, a clear winner! Here are the 4 scapes again, and there creators:
Scape 1: Winner! Pardeep
Scape 2: Matt
Scape 3: Daniel
Scape 4: Steve
Congratulations Pardeep! :)
More photos from the day at the link below (which I hadn't posted previously)...
We had a little scape competition when at Matt's at the weekend, and we decided to post the photos up for everyone to vote on! As yet, we don't know what the winner gets... Perhaps just the knowledge that their scape outshone the others on the day?
We decided to keep it anonymous, so please...
Be fair here. The import costs will be different, the exchange rates have been all over the place over the last few years also. When TGM bought these the exchange rate would probably have been far less favourable. Equally it's likely that Aqua Forest buy their ADA products from a US...
I was fortunate enough to be able to buy an almost new 20l Dennerley cube, light and filter from Chris Lukhaup at vivarium. He had 4 or 5 which he was using to sell his wild caught shrimp out of, and was then selling them off at the end of the show. Best 30 euros I've spent in a long time
It's tempting :) Maybe I can get in touch with Rory, who bought some stick insect eggs at Vivarium! I've just realised I have a hedge outside my bedroom window which is perfect for a stick insect!
Thankfully, I don't know what "that show" is. I'm finding that as I get older (*shudder*) I'm far more selective in my TV habits.
Loving that last post Gareth :) I'm toying with the idea of one of those nano viv's you linked to in another thread. I think I have the perfect place for it...
There seems to be a ladybird swarm around where I work at the moment. Great to see :) I was just sitting on a bench in the sun watching 4 or 5 scurrying around, and playing with a little jumping spider too.
Well I think everyone's had a chance to discuss this now and it's got the issue of donations into people's heads. I'll lock the topic now, as I don't want it to spiral off out of control.
I think there's been some interesting ideas raised, and some good points made. Specifically I hope people...
Don't worry folks, this is all just discussion and ideas. Rest assured that there are no plans to implement any kind of subscription etc.
This society has always functioned based on the input of it's members. The most valuable thing, in my honest opinion, is the wealth of knowledge available...
Don't forget that UKAPS gets a small amount from sponsorship as well. Donations are very important though, as the cost of becoming a sponsor really isn't that high.
I'm torn between the idea of a subscription based setup. I think perhaps a small yearly subscription to be able to use the...
Hi 1stgolf. Yep, it should appear after a certain amount of posts (I forget how many). The idea being it stops people signing up purely to sell/buy and not necessarily be part of the forum/society.
In the past many have been happy enough to pass cuttings on for the cost of postage and a small donation, or even just a donation. I think that worked pretty well :)
I'd be tempted to look elsewhere and cancel your orders (don't buy from elsewhere until you cancel them though!) If they haven't shipped your items then they should not have charged you yet.
I'd look at second hand tanks tbh, or try to find someone willing to donate an old tank. Equipment might be a different story, health and safety might dictate buying new? Or at least PAT certified :)
I'm thinking about the Pico contest from last year and how much fun that was. I'm going to have a think about this guys, and see if any of my experiences from running that little contest would translate to something bigger ;)
I thought with internet orders the supplier isn't supposed to take payment until the goods are shipped? That could be completely wrong, but I'm sure I've been told/read that somewhere...
Hey folks. A work mate has very kindly given me a Koralia 1 which he was using in his marine setup, until he replaced it with Tunze powerheads. It turned up on my desk this morning covered in the usual marine algae and "concreation" (for want of a better term).
Just wondering if there are any...
Tom did a nice 60cm/2ft cube:
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=10424
Would be an interesting one Andy! You'd have the depth, but also a lot of height to play with.
Re: What's the demand for high street planted aquarium shops
You also have to bare in mind that to buy and sell livestock, you need to have the right licenses, but in order to get those licenses you have to be inspected by the RSPCA, selling the live stock. How can you buy the livestock in the...
Re: Discussion: What's your favourite part of the hobby and
For me it's the hardscaping, as that's what I feel is my strongest ability in this hobby :) I love the initial vision, and trying to scribble ideas onto a scrap of paper. Then, playing with rocks or wood until I get something I like...
They're a great price at the moment. I paid £150 for mine with the cabinet, but they're £99 now! Shame it's collection only. Would be tempted but really can't afford, or have space for another
Hey Neil. It's a 20 litre TGM optiwhite tank with 2kg FE strapped onto it  Cal Aqua nano glassware on an Eheim Classic 2213 (want to replace this, but difficult to find a filter physically small enough for the cabinet). Also got a Do!Aqua Music Glass diffuser with Daz's J pipe...
Do you have any limestone rocks in the tank? It could be that the addition of Co2 reacted with this in some way, though I doubt that would cause such an issue.
Can you give more details about your DIY CO2 setup? Did it manage to overflow into the tank? A white blob could be the yeast mix...
Re: Using pins to hold plants on bogwood
Why not use garden wire? The sort which is vinyl coated. ADA sell a brand of this stuff called "ADA Wood tight".
Yes, those are the same tanks, only with the odd chip in them. Silicone is the same as when they were sold for £35 or there abouts at the end of 2008. I gave my to LondonDragon, who spent a while cleaning up the silicone and ended up with a reasonable tank.
The clarity of these tanks was...
I've read less than favourable things about ADA Amazonia II. I know LondonDragon had problems with it. You need to consider the amonia spike you get from ADA substrates when using it from new, ie if you are planning to rescape and existing tank which is stocked you would have to be cautious...
I think really long and short are if you're working on a nano or a larger tank. In a nano, long pinsettes become a bit of an issue. That being said they're not majorly different. I cope OK with my UKAPS ones which are all medium/long :)
Try out some of the different ones at TGM this weekend...
I suspect they're Dennerle nano tanks. They have similar corner filters/lights and look very similar. Also, it's a german vid, so it wouldn't surprise me :)
