    Online Shrimp Stores

I assume you know about Freshwater Shrimp and Sharnbrook Shrimp already :) Most smaller sellers are hobbyist breeders selling off surplus to fund their hobby. Shipping costs will always be on the higher end as I would expect most people to ship via a priority mail service such as Royal Mail...

Yes sir, Mr Andy. Bit of biking here and there. Good to know :)

I believe Freshwater Shrimp are getting some copies of Breeders and Keepers. I expect numbers will be limited though.

Nice! I'd be more than happy with those at £2 each.

I know the feeling Martin :D

    When to add shrimp

In my opinion, you want to give it at least a couple of weeks, but more longer would be better. Amazonia will be leeching ammonia for a while as well so lots of water changes too.

    Strange behavior??

Where did your plants come from? Unfortunately some plant suppliers (usually Asian imports) use pesticides and other chemicals. It's possible it's related to this. There's probably a post here on UKAPS, but not seen it personally, but George Farmer has posted about this on PFK's forum: A...

    Asassin Snails

Just be careful about keeping them with Shrimp. I've had assassins take out cherry shrimp before :bored: I'd be unsure of the vegetarian diet though, they are carnivorous after all. You could maybe feed them the odd bit of frozen meaty food? (blood worms for example). I've read that they'll...

    CRS tank - which substrate?

I've just started to use Naturesoil in my new shrimp tank. Only downside is I'm using the larger grain size and I think I could do with capping it off with a much smaller black sand or something.

Where is best to buy shrimp online?

May be a good time to start thinking about buying, as the Euro is weakening against the Pound, due to Greece's monetary issues. Something to keep an eye on...

    Rabbit Pellets

Having a quick look around it looks like green pellets have copper sulfate in them. This appears to be OK for shrimp (though I'm not sure what quantities constitute a safe level). According to what I've read, many fish foods have this in as a preservative. Elemental copper is what you want to...

cherry red shrimp are in corner?

If they're hanging out near the surface, it does suggest an oxygen issue. I'd try raising the filter outlet to increase surface movement, and also do a water change to get the O2 levels up, just to be sure. Do you use any liquid carbon? Too much of this in the water can cause shrimp to...

    Assassin Snails kill Shrimps

Mine too :) Only had them a few weeks, and they've done quite a good job. Maybe we should set up a pest snail removal service and just hire them out to members for 2 weeks at a time

Small shrimp that don't breed in the aquarium?

You don't need them. They do perform a function, but they're not totally necessary. I think they make an interesting addition that isn't fish ;) Ah right, nice one Garuf. Didn't realise that. I think my LFS claimed they were cherries but orrange. That being said, the ones she had in may...

Small shrimp that don't breed in the aquarium?

I thought the orange shrimp were basically cherries? If so, they'll breed like rabbits I assume.

Small shrimp that don't breed in the aquarium?

I hear that rednose shrimp need salt/brackish to breed. Might be worth researching them. They're pretty cool looking.

    Shrimp Bedfellows

I've kept harlequins, pentazona barb and various micro rasbora (maculatus and brigatae I think) with amano shrimp, without issue. Kept the smaller fish with cherries as well (not sure the harlequins/barbs would resist the shrimplets) :)

Can you keep cherries and amanos in hardwater

I would assume lead isn't good, but copper is the worst. Do you use hot water from the hot tap when water changing? If your hot water system is quite old, this might not be helping. I have problems with shrimp as well, but I've just moved so I'm hoping I'll have more success. Also, on the...

    Temperature for the Tiger

    V red Cherry Shrimp

Great shrimp Andy! I like the first pic, with the not-so-red cherry trying to muscle in, and the last with all the not-so-reds massing, as if to make a charge for food

    Where to buy

Aqua Essentials has Tiger shrimp, though I don't know if he keeps them in stock, or oders them in. You might be lucky to get Nerites from your LFS. It's worth asking a good LFS if they can order something in for you :)

I've just received 3 assassin snails through the post last week. I think as long as they are packaged well enough they should be ok.

weird life form found in my tank.

If I'm honest, I've never done this. Sterozine (or something like that) might be worth a look. You could also consider a natural predator, like a botia loach but again you'd need to research this some more :) Also Anentome helena (Assasin Snail) might be worth a look. I'm considering buying...

weird life form found in my tank.

Do you have any shrimp or snails in the tank that you want to keep? If not, you could use one of the anti parasite medications which, along with killing off parasites, usually kill of snails and such. Research this option thoroughly before gonig down this route as some meds can cause problems...

    Moss in Shrimp Tank

Not really :) Just lots of cover so they have sheltered places to hide from fish etc. When they shed their shells they are vulnerable, and need to hide for a day or so while their new shell hardens :)
  35. Steve Smith

    Moss in Shrimp Tank

Definately. Shrimp love moss :) In my opinion it's because tastey morsels get trapped in the fine plant mass. Shrimp love to spend hours grazing accross a chunk of moss!

Will snails eat plants as well as algae?

The common pest/ramshorn/trumpet snails that I imagine a lot of us have don't eat plants as far as I know. Many apple snail species however do, as I found out to my horror on one of my last tanks :(

    I believe that'd be 12mm. It takes 12mm hose as I recall :)

Cherry Shrimp gone in to hiding

Could also be that they shed at the same time too. When they shed they tend to hide for a good few days as they're shell is quite soft initially.

    cant keep CRS!!!

Might be your Easy carbo. I have heard of some having problems with EC/Excel and shrimp. I think that's what killed off my original cherry shrimp in a small tank I had running last year. Also, Dan has just lost a couple of CRS to what I think he put down to an EC overdose I think :( Still...

    Help for Amano shrimp breeding

No experience with breeding, but the shrimplets need to be raised in slightly salty water, sort of a brackish setup I believe. I think Dan was going to attempt this but I don't think he did do it in the end. In fresh water the shrimplets won't survive, but they'll provide live food for any...

    Iodine for shedding?

I'd imagine if they were being attacked, there wouldn't be much left to identify as a problem with moulting. It sounds asif the shrimp that Egmel is finding are literally intact, just half/out of their old shell.
  49. Steve Smith

    What are these???

You never know, you might be able to cultivate them as fry food :)

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

I use my hot water tap too, on the smaller tanks. Not really had a problem, unless you count loosing 20 odd cherry shrimp :( (don't think that was related though!). I have a combi boiler in an old house which I think had it's central heating upgraded some years back (rented place).
  51. Steve Smith

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

It depends on your water pipes mainly. I think it has something to do with hot water sitting about longer in the pipes/boiler/tank and having more copper loaded into it. If you're off a newer combi boiler it shouldn't be a problem (heats from the cold water supply on the fly. That's what I've...

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

    Hydra

Apparently they can eat shrimplets, and can give a bit of a sting. No idea how that would affect fish though :|
  58. Steve Smith

    Hydra

I've not heard of hydra before, and after having a quick hunt about online it seems I have Hydra in my new setup too :( No fish in there yet though. When I first saw them I assumed they were hair algae or something, though I thought they looked a bit too weird for that! I've just read that...

    shrimp with only one claw

Was it a shrimp or a crayfish? It might be that it has lost the claw in an incident with an inquisitive fish. If so it should grow back after a few molts :) Crayfish aren't always a good thing for community from what I've read. I believe they can be predatory... Can you describe what it...

    Red Cherry

I'm hoping to get some cherries soon. I'll more than likely keep a breeding group in one of my smaller tanks (with tiny endlers) and move on some of the larger ones :)

    Anyone know what this???

I remember reading somewhere about long arm shrimp being predators, grabbing sleeping tetra and other small fish. Worth making sure its not one of these :(

    Feeding Shrimp

Interesting problem :) You could try larger algae wafers. After an hour or so they start to break appart. I'd say the average wafer is about 1cm across, so might feed plenty :)

    Bamboo shrimp

So adding a current low down in my tank (Rio 180) won't cause a problem for the plants? It'll be near to a group of Crypt. Balansae.

    Bamboo shrimp

I was lucky enough to be given a couple of these yesterday and what I didn't realise is that they generally feed using a fan system, filtering debris our of the water. They do however seem to be happy enough eating debris from the gravel. I was wondering, after doing some reading I think I...
