Morrisons and asda sell thin bleach. I've been buying asdas for a while and it's marked up as Savers thin bleach.
I would only use bleach on the lily's though, a toothbrush is good for the rocks.
To be honest it's a good excuse for a rescape. Plus not convinced I should be placing 300 plus kilo up on my landing 😱, I wouldn't trust Barratt to have made strong enough flooring. Also I couldn't move the tank with rocks and substrate in situ, far to heavy and would make far too much mess.
I...
Hi guys,
The whole downstairs of our house is due for redecoration and new flooring so I have to temporarily move the tank. Therefore I've decided I will rescape the tank.
Can anyone recommend a good temporary home for all my fish and shrimp? I've been looking at storage boxes but was worried...
Yeah that's what I've found recently, I went through a stage of trying to limit my ferts, chasing the reds on the H'ra etc, but the plants all slowed and looked a little unhappy. Since changing back to full EI the HM has exploded and is happily pearling away after a couple hours.
Yea I have it growing in mine. Grows like a weed. Nice and Bushy, find it very easy to grow, not sure how it would fare with low light/co2 etc. I trim mine back every 3 to 4 weeks normally but left it longer this time to allow it to reach the surface.
Aquarium Gardens have it in their 900 which...
Thank you @dw1305 that made them much easier to collect. Cories went crazy for them when I managed to sneak them past my 35 white cloud minnows 😂
I'm thinking of trying to introduce daphnia to the water butt and guessing that as its OK for bloodworm it'll be OK for daphnia?
Thanks Darrel, I now see exactly what that link describes.
I've caught quite a few but that is one tedious task 🤣, pipetting them one by one trying to avoid the crud they love so much.
Sorry @dw1305 , what do you mean when you say extract them from their tubes? Is this something I need to do before feeding the fish or have I misunderstood. 😁
Thanks @mort and @dw1305 thats what I've tried doing but the little blighters are determined to stay within the ball of crap in the middle. OK I'll have another go, thanks.
I've found a large number of bloodworm and smaller black worms in my water butt, however there is a decent amount of crud/leaf litter and moss at the bottom. Is there an easy way to separate the two so u don't add loads of mess to my aquarium?
Yep, mine does the same. Except I don't have any polystyrene overhang either. Quite a few people have asked similar questions as it's a little concerning 😬
Depends on the plants you plan on planting first. It is doable as most of the plants we buy are grown emersed so you can replicate this by planting, spraying with water and sealing the tank with cling film. You just keep an eye and spray every day or so. I've used this to get carpeting plants to...
I used to have my diffuser under my fx6 intake, worked ok and no bubbles or noise from filter. However the fx6 has a purge function every 12 hours which released any build up of co2 anyway.
I bought a few ramshorn snails to start my colony off, great algae eaters. Tank has plenty of them. They won't overpopulate if there's not an abundance of food.
I used gastropex when i set up my tank to eliminate baby Malaysian trumpet snails. Used when the tank was just planted and I haven't seen one as yet.
If you have a few snails it's best to do a few extra water changes after the treatment course to mitigate any ammonia spikes.
I used to do quite a lot of sea fishing where I used to take the odd fish home and always carried a large wooden batten or priest in my bag to dispatch them as quick as possible. A fast, strong hit to the head would sort most situations.
However when I lost my Harlequins last year I used clove...
Fenbendazole.
Absolutely I had quite a population of them, used to be on the glass even when the lights were on. They are the ultimate scavenger and their population will grow reasonably unhindered as long as you have food/waste.
In your situation I would try baiting a bit more, they are quite...
Caught red handed no, seen plenty of planaria next to shrimp who have jumped away when they have came into contact with something (possibly the slime trail they are supposed to leave behind). Ramshorns breed prolifically and their numbers started falling and I didn't see any small ones. So even...
Most of my planaria were whiteish/cream coloured, but they definitely took shrimp and small snails.
On a note of caution the no planaria says it doesn't effect ramshorns but it did effect a few of mine. I've not seen a worm since though and shrimp and snails are back to normal.
Yes I've witnessed them 'flinch' or jump when they come across a planaria. Ive witnessed an increase in shrimplets since treating the tank, and that's even with the 30 wcmm and 15 cpds.
It depends on what sp of snail you have. I have/had nerites and ramshorns. I removed the nerites as all meds for planaria are fatal to them. However the ramshorns bred throughout the treatment. For the sake of removing the few nerites I have it was a safe choice compared to the downsides of the...
I had to get rid of mine. Noticed a lot less baby shrimp and found the odd dead one, can't say if the planaria killed it or just fed on it after it died but they just creeped me out. They supposedly feed on shrimp and fish eggs too, if you are against meds at the moment you can try 'no more...
I followed the exact same advice when I set up my AS900, co2 was high for the first few weeks to help the plants acclimatise. As you are exceeding the 'optimum' amount (lime green drop checker) you can easily drop it back down slowly without any downsides. If there is an excess of Co2 then the...
With the exception planted discus aquariums I think most of us run our tanks at 22-23 degrees. Which is just above most people's room temp. I have a aquascaper 900 and run mine at 22, I do loose water throughout the week mainly due to my heating being on I think [emoji57] but I've never had any...
To be honest I couldn't tell you, don't trust test kits and never really looked into it.
Thank you [emoji106]
Aren't you running a chihiros wrgb11? Which is putting out more light than my twinstar? Doesn't bode well for me then. My Amanos generally strip a plant to nothing as soon as it starts...
Mine is growing like a weed, but my water is nowhere near as hard as some on here (180ppm). It's growing everywhere and I'm having to trim it constantly to try and keep it semi nice looking. I'm not sure it's 100% healthy, but hasn't got any holes as yet.
I've just planted some blyxa japonica...
Which meds have you bought @Deano3? The one @Tim Harrison recommended or the one I did.
Not sure if the esha is OK with snails but the one I posted about contains Fenbendazole which is toxic to nerites, meaning you cannot return the snails to the tank for at least 7 days.
Definitely remove the snails though, the kit comes with full instructions. Not sure on a temp home but I imagine an old ice cream tub with a lid would be OK,
They are planaria, you can buy a dog wormer medication on ebay. Search for planaria on eBay [emoji106]There's a chap that sells it ready made/dissolved. Just have to remove nerites.
They can come in on plants/hardscape and nerites, not sure if they can travel on fish but I wouldn't be...
I'm loving all the kitchen roll and towel rails, I'll be ordering one for mine.
Can't believe I've not thought of it before after all the mess I make during maintenance.
They are ramshorn snails (I hope) and they are very good at cleaning algae off of hardscape and plants. Plenty of people (myself included) introduce these snails to their tanks for that reason. They won't reproduce faster than the food source if that makes sense. Mine certainly don't. They will...
I haven't got any advice on shutting them down to be honest as it would be quite difficult right now. Not so much for the plants but for the livestock. (unless posting)
But they are cracking looking scapes and it would be a shame to see them go. [emoji106]
Is there anyway you could 'slow' the...
Thank you Darrel, I left it filled with water for several days and have rinsed it multiple times. I'll do it once more with some distilled vinegar just to be safe. Thanks.
Hi.
Could someone tell me whether empty sodium hypochlorite containers are suitable for storing water in for water changes? Well rinsed obviously. If its any help it's 11% strength.
Sam.
I didn't have any gaps in the cling film for the first few weeks, I made a few holes after 4 weeks. Completely sealed except daily ventilation. But 95% is plenty high enough.
I would turn the light up to 100% as the plants have unlimited co2 access, as for the water I always aim for the plants to be damp and for water to be collecting on the glass. The whole tank wants to be damp and humid for the plants in my opinion.
A good spray daily to cover all the plants, keep...
Haha that mad me chuckle, similar here, I just get asked 'do you really need to leave that barrel there and how many water butt's do you really need in OUR garden'
No wastage of water is what i tell her [emoji23]
Personally I would let them be, I've introduced them into my tanks, if you don't mind the look. They don't breed too fast if you're not overfeeding and they do a great job cleaning and feeding off of biofilm and eating waste. Sometimes the shells can be quite attractive, they also seem to avoid...
I have kept both of those species and I live in Somerset, I know it doesn't fix your present problem it may be worthwhile to acclimatise them to your tap as it will save a lot of effort in the future.
Makes water changes easier anyway [emoji106]
I use the inkbird (older version) controller and have mine set as others have said, however I have mine set for 22 degrees which is slightly above the air temp, so the heater goes on very rarely. When you are trying to heat your tank to 28 degrees the heater is going to be constantly heating due...
I remove them, keep them moist somewhere and when I'm done I trim the roots of the frogbit and place them back on top the water. Pita leaving them in place as you have probably realised.
I have quite a few nerites in there and to kill them would be a shame to be honest. I'll order the panacur as above, but first I'll try the baiting to see if I have a decent population before dosing. Obviously if I can remove them without using chemicals then that would be the best.
It's hard...
Thanks Darrel, I've read those threads now and you mention it's quite cheap, however I can only find it for £20 for 5, 1gram packets. Seems expensive or am I mistaken?
Thanks, did you have snails in the tank? If I kill all the snails (mts, ramshorn and nerite) I will have quite a large ammonia spike due to not being able to remove the rotting corpses from the substrate.
Hi all,
I've tried reading multiple old threads on here but struggle to get a definitive answer. I have noticed quite a few planaria worms on my glass recently and would like to remove them as I've heard they eat certain snails and shrimp.
I've read that the no planaria treatment can kill...
Inexperience. Not implementing the co2 correctly, possibly not enough light to punch down to 24''. Dwarf Hairgrass became chocked by moss that was mixed in and I maybe trimmed it too hard and too early.
Hopefully I've learnt from the mistakes so next time might be better [emoji106]
OTOH the...
Mine looked very similar to @Zeus. with the root penetration. I used a aquatic compost capped with sand. All the roots grew very well and into the soil I believe and the carpet spread very well. My only issue came when I flooded the tank TBH. That's when I lost the carpet.
To add my dry start...
I'm still very much learning, however my understanding is that removing ferts will only promote not reduce algae, as algae will thrive on much less than plants. So basically removing your ferts has starved your plants, which you have seen in the deteriorating growth since you removed the ferts...
I've suffered a little with bba recently and I believe that's partly down to me not removing damaged plants and rotting leaves and not deep cleaning enough.
I like the look of this bit of kit, @Zeus do you use this on your 500 litre?
I use the braided pipe to replace the ribbed hosing that came with my fx6, stiffer than the ribbed but larger inside diameter for better flow. Plus possibly easier to clean.
Hi,
I found the all pond solutions pipe to be very rigid and on occasion prone to kinks. The obvious and most popular would be eheim piping but I have bought a lot of pipe through, https://www.aquariumplumbing.co.uk/buy-aquariumplumbing.asp?ID=1781&ProdGrp=116
Seems to be of a better quality...
My latest tank was from ND aquatics. Very poor customer service from start to finish. The finishing on the tank also isn't great.
I'd avoid to be honest. I would pay a lot more to avoid using them.
Hi all,
I flooded my tank on Sunday after a 12 week dry start. It's a high tech so I'm obviously going through setting up the co2 correctly and stabilising it whilst doing a ph profile.
However I am experiencing mould on the wood and die back/crypt melt and wondered when I could add critters...
Thank you, I've had to open the tank and remove dust from some of the eloecharis which is a bit of a pain tbh. Hopefully they don't make too much dust out of my wood in the next 4-6 weeks [emoji33]
Thank you Darrel.
Considering I'm doing a Dry start and humidity is high (all the links you provided state that high humidity is good for them). Then do you think I'm best to just leave the wood where it is and not remove it?
That piece of wood is not too big and can easily be removed and soaked if needed. The only thing is will loose is the yogurt/Moss mixture painted on the wood.
If i am reading that correct then that's woodworm? I have had to remove a piece of new furniture that was infested with them recently. The redmoor has had no contact with any wood before going in the tank.
If I'm not wrong I need to be slightly more concerned with the presence of them?
Thanks. I was hoping you would reply, do you have any idea where it could have come from?
The soil perhaps.
Could it be causing the pile of sawdust that has come out of my redmoor root? I'm thinking no but what could that be.
Cheers.
Sam.
Hi all,
Started a Dry start off yesterday morning and this morning I have noticed little squiggle marks in the condensation on the glass. On closer inspection there is a tiny little white worm. Can anybody help with ID please. Is it something I should worry about. The worm is approx 2mm long.
Thank you very much for the kind offer.. been out most of the day so had a bit of a go at removing with some of the suggested methods.
I ended up using lemon mixed with bi carb to make a sort of fizzing paste, no use. Used vinegar with plenty of clean razor blades attached to a scraper. Might of...
Thanks, I thought it might have etched it's way into the glass however I can still feel 'raised' areas where it is on the glass if you see what I mean..
I'll look into the patio cleaner as recommended and give that a go. If that doesn't work then I'll go to glazers.
Thanks guys.
I used to clean them every week but had to take old tank down rather quickly due to crack and the cover glasses got left to one side. Might try warm citric acid, as like I said Mrs cleans kettle with it but has to be boiling. Not about to do that to the glass [emoji16]
Tank is not...
Funny you should say that. I even mixed some citric acid powder with the vinegar.. the Mrs is always using it to clean the kettle etc so thought it would work but didn't.. thanks. Didn't know if was safe to polish it out. I've heard toothpaste can work tho.
Hi all,
Trying to clean the cover glasses on aquarium, they are cover in hard water deposits from keeping African cichlids.
I have tried vinegar and elbow grease to no avail, even leaving to soak overnight.
Has anyone used anything that has got rid of these marks?
The old tank used to be...
