Bugs you might encounter in your aquarium

Can anyone identify these worms found in the bottom of a sump online a Discus Tank. We suspect they may be harmless detritus worms, but the owner just wants to be certain. TIA

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Thanks Darrell, very much appreciated. They have indeed done exactly what you have advised above. I mixed the powder in a solution of warm water in a small container and made sure it was completely dissolved before adding it. So it appears to have done the trick. I also vacuumed out the few...

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi, the 22% Panacur - Fenbendazole arrived today. I did a 50% water change and added it to a small sample of water, mixed it, and added it around 1.30pm this afternoon. How do you know when the Hydra are dead? I can still see plenty of them on the glass at the moment. Do they just fall off...

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Hi Darrel, Yes I have seen the fresh water Hydra, they are another pain in the backside. I have been siphoning them out doing water changes. But you can never get them all. I might end up catching as many of the shrimp as I can, sell them to my local LFS. Then bin the plants and substrate.

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

Thanks Darrel, That is a relief. Although to be honest they do really freak me out. I think I'd rather not have them but probably impossible now to get rid of them now that they are in there. Cheers, Steve

What are these Worms in my Shrimp Tank

A month or two ago I cleaned out both of my big Eheim T5 650 Thermal Filters. Amongst the filter medium, in the sponges and in the bottom of the filter were about 60 odd or more Red Cherry Shrimps. Rather than pour them away with all the gunk in the bottom of the filter I decided to set up a...

Solution for getting rid of freshwater limpets - Acroloxus Lacustris

In over 40 years of fishkeeping I have never seen one of those Acroloxus Lacustris in any of my tanks. Any idea how they got into your tank? I guess I've just been lucky.

My 200 litre planted Red Cherry Shrimp Tank

I've got a few hundred at the moment. Every few weeks I catch as many adults as I can and sell them to my local LFS for £1.00 each. Usually between 50 and 70 at any one time. The hardest part is catching them. I've tried the siphon through a tube into a bucket method. But it is impossible to...

It's been a few months now since I set this up. The tank is a Juwel Lido 200 tank with 2 x T5 tubes. Running with an Eheim External Canister Filter and 2 x double sponge filters. Injected CO2 at 90 bubbles per minute, and EI Dosing at half dosing. Lighting period 9 hours per day. Starting to...

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can help with this question. I have got a very established planted tank with a lot of Red Cherry Shrimp in that are doing very well. In the tank I have also got 4 x large Cardinal Tetras. One of them has developed White Spot, and another has got fungus on its...

    Cherry Shrimp Water

Thanks very much, great news. Although I just read somewhere that you shouldn't put them in a tank with freshly bought plants, because they supposedly contain chemicals which will kill the shrimp. I never heard that before. I was going to put them in here, but I only out the plants in yesterday.

Tips on culturing white worms please?

Hi, I like the video, and the bread idea with glass on top. I just avoid the plastic boxes because it makes the soil sweat when it gets too warm. The wooden crates allow a bot more aeration, allows the soil to breathe keeping the soil from going off too quickly. Otherwise great video. Steve

Tips on culturing white worms please?

Hi, If by 'white worms' you mean Enchytraen worms? I used to culture these and feed them to my Discus fish which usually induced them to spawn. Get yourself a starter culture from a reliable source, you can find them on ebay and the supplier usually provides a set of instructions on how to...

Hi Matty, What PLAN? :D There was no plan just hit and miss by trial and error, mostly error   Maybe they did not like the sterile tank, maybe what they needed was a gravel / stony bed with high movement of water around them similar to the river flowing hmmmm

Not exactly sure mate, but my tank for the shrimp fry raising is located in the garage and it is pretty cold in there. Also I think the water for the phytoplankton has to be a certain temperature, but like Richard says we are still shooting in the dark. Steve

    Breeding Amano / Yamato shrimp

Hi Richard, Seems like we are both fumbling about on a trial by error route. I left it for a few...
