Long Term Algae Issue, please help!

It’s definitely not cyano, it’s green spot algae type of thing. Impossible to remove without a razor, so impossible to remove from leaves.

Long Term Algae Issue, please help!

Thanks Darrel, that does make a lot of sense actually. Do you suggest adding more iron? Would this work with the water chemistry in mind? Do you have any suggestions?

Long Term Algae Issue, please help!

I’ve had this tank up and running for 2 years now, everything in it grows well, and there’s no other types of algae except for the one pictured which covers the plants and kills them. I read that high phosphates cause this, so I tested my tap water (London tap) and found that my tap water had...

    What on earth is this?!?

Well, I'm still not sure, but I spent 3 hours cleaning the whole tank, filter & attachments. & 60% WC. Had to use a razor blade to get that stuff off, VERY stubboorn! Just hope that's the end of it.

    What on earth is this?!?

Neither have I. I have had snails for years anyway and they've never left any marks. There's SO MUCH of it. And I can't spot any different snails :( EDIT: It must be some kind of algae/bacteria, as it's growing by the hour on it's own accord.

    What on earth is this?!?

This has appeared in the last 48 hours of adding a plant bought from the forum. EDIT: Those weird swirly things on the glass. It's everywhere! :eh:

    Black Algae?

Hi Neil, Is this tank supposed to be low tech? Because adding all that fresh water adds CO2, and you are dosing too. Which essentially makes it closer to EI. I'm always wary of lighting levels without CO2, I think you can get away with MUCH lower than most think, an when you do, flow isn't...

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

Hi, it worked a treat! No BGA since, just a ton of hair algae now :?

    Green Film on Surface

My tap water is very hard, and I use eco-complete, but I still get surface scum unless I use my skimmer attachment every couple of days...

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

Just unwrapped my tank after a 72 hour blackout, and some of my stems have grown MASSIVE!!!! I can't believe it, there was definitely no light getting in, just the filter and an airstone going. All the fish are well, will post pics and details later :)

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

I'm dosing KNO3 1/4 tsp every other day (double EI), might up it to 1/2 then?

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

That's just so much flow, it would blow my flipping sand around! I know that I have 10x flow, and I also know that many other people manage to maintain great planted tanks with 10x or less, i.e. oldwhitewood's 60cm. 60 quid is good, but my filter has a built in heater which is extremely...

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

I have an eden 501 aswell, the flow of my 2322 is double that - pump output is 700LPH and the filter circulation is 500LPH, I see CO2 bubbles flow right round the whole aquarium so I know that it's not that bad, but yes I suppose more flow would be nicer, but it's just not an option, this filter...

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

Thanks for your post, but believe me, I have tried everything and everything seems to be fine to me otherwise. I plan to do a blackout next week, I'm waiting for a small air pump to arrive so my fish don't suffocate, I'm going to wrap it up extremely well and hope that it all dies :x

Precisely. And that's just ridiculous, if not expensive

    Green Film on Surface

Maybe so, but it gets rid of it. I get it in my tank and have more than 10x turnover filter. If you don't have LOADS of surface movement when you have high light, you are gonna get it.

    DESPAIR: My BGA Problem.

Hello scapers, I was hoping around this time to post some lovely pics of my tank and plants, though the BGA just won't back off. I had to go away for 3 days, it was the end of my dosing cycle so the tank normally gets 2 days break, but had 3 instead. The CO2 and lights were on timers and...

    Green Film on Surface

I had similar problems for months, tried everything, then I thought sod it! And bought a skimmer attatchment for £3 off ebay (the same one that aquaessentials sell), now I skim the surface through the night, ensureing that the surface is crystal clear all day :D I'd say it's been my best my...

    Is a blackout necessary?

BTW I have never blacked out, and find spot dosing (with a syringe), Excel with the filter off for a while far more effective (and cheaper) than just dumping some in the tank every day!

    blackout raise temp of tank??

It's not natural, and it scares me! I just don't like the idea, and I love my fishes too much! not for me.

    blackout raise temp of tank??

Well BGA is due to either low Phosphorus, low flow rate or bad maintainence - dirty filter etc. I have been through hell and back with it. I just cleaned up well, dosed double EI rates, and got as much flow from my filter as possible - shortening hose etc. You just have to keep on top of it...

    blackout raise temp of tank??

What is the problem - what type of algae etc etc EDIT: Link me the thread for your stats / info?

    blackout raise temp of tank??

Water will stay cooler anyway I reckon, but if you're gonna do a blackout you're gonna do a blackout right? Maybe get an airline in there? Personally I won't do blackouts anyway, i hate the idea.
  27. PM

    blackout raise temp of tank??

Water will naturally be a couple of degrees C below room temp. So there won't be any lights on it heating it up (obviously), so just turn your heater off if the rooms that hot. Or just set the thermostat. It ain't gonna heat up without a heat source

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

Hi ceg4048, in my opinion the lighting isn't that high, 48W of T5 for 14USG - I had 96W of T5 on the same tank when had Iwagumi layout with no problems! (Was dosing with Seachem back then). Also the light unit is 20CM above the top of the tank (quite far esp. in proportion to the tank), so the...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

Okayyy... SO! I super mega cleaned everything as I said before, upped the dosing a bit (about 60% more of each thing), and have better circulation than I've had in a long time (due to lots of pruning and re-arranging things in the tank). But I am still getting BGA, admittedly it's not as bad...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

Cool, well I just spent ALL DAY cleaning the tank, glass, filter, plants (every leaf), and re-planted it all. though I threw away probably 60% of plants due to their poor condition. I kinda just planted them back any old how too  From now on I will dose double my old fert regime and...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

Hi, it's T5 - the arcadia plant pros. I dose a Dash (1/4 tsp) of KNO3 every other day, along with a Smidgen (1/32 tsp)of K2PO4. And then a Smidgen of Trace on the other days. I have some baking measuring spoons to measure these amounts precisely. Does this amount seem okay? I have no idea...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

hmm, well my filter is 500 ltrs per hour, and the tank is 54 ltrs (but obviously contains less water than that), so I think my flow is good! ALL of the plants visibly move in the current, and it's not over grown. I cleaned the filter about two months ago (after maybe 6 months) and it really...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

At the moment I just cannot get rid of my BGA, I remove as much as poss, and within 1 or 2 days it's EVERYWHERE again. Stats: CO2: Pressurized - 30PPM (drop checker) Filter: Eheim 2322 Lights: 2x24W suspended (10 hours) Dosing: EI - K2PO4, KNO3, Trace all from Aqua Essentials. Water change...
