    lower pH with vinegar

Hey, Yeah Ali, but i think, or it appears to me that mafoo was stating he had had landscape in there a while ago. Not currently ;)
  3. Nathaniel Whiteside

    lower pH with vinegar

So your ph comes out your RO machine ~ 7.5?
  4. Nathaniel Whiteside

    lower pH with vinegar

Its definitely not the '2 year ago landscape rock'. Id put money on it being the florabase, as its supposed to have a ph of ~6.5. Whats your RO ph before you add?

    ph and purigen

Can you hit .1 of a degree? Edit: Just read up and these look very good indeed. Thanks :D
  6. Nathaniel Whiteside

    ph and purigen

If the waters nice and soft, and Lindy uses enough, they'll be some effect on ph. I mentioned testing Ph as Isn't it a lot easier to get an accurate measure on with a decent meter? Are there many other tests other than liquid you can do for Kh? Unless you send it to a lab, of course.
  7. Nathaniel Whiteside

    ph and purigen

Why not try the ph after a week with it out just before water change. Then do the same with? I'd personally find it interesting. As I'll be doing a similar setup very shortly.
  8. Nathaniel Whiteside

    ph and purigen

I doubt it will affect the lower ph caused by the alder cones etc. Rather just traps the tannin colour, as after all, they're still in the water. Have you thought about running a little bag of DI resin in your filter? Softens the water no end. I don't know how controllable it would be though.

v2 pure ro system cartridge replacement.

Hey mate, I'm good thanks, how are you? Yeah I use RO man mate. I had to replace the two filters and two casings when they froze year before last. He's got everything you'll need mate.

v2 pure ro system cartridge replacement.

You'll probably only need to change the DI resin pal

    Limescale

Yes, it's your water hardness. Reducing mineral content of your water is the only method, by means of an RO unit / dosing less fertilisers. No, co2 will not affect this, as it's a mineral content problem as oppose to PH problem. Darrel will be along with the order that salts dry around the...

Waste water from RO through HMA filter

Running through your HMA would cause it to need replacing more regularly than if using a HMA on a normal tap, due to the accumulation of Solids in the waste from the RO.
  16. Nathaniel Whiteside

Waste water from RO through HMA filter

Yeah, but your HMA filter would need replacing regularly as the RO waste would be more concentrated in minerals than tap water. Use a pump and cut your waste down to minimal, forget 'no waste' as itll cost you more in the long run.
  17. Nathaniel Whiteside

Waste water from RO through HMA filter

The single best way to cut down your wastage is to instal an RO pump.
  18. Nathaniel Whiteside

Adding CO2 to hard water = happier fish?

Yeah, it won't soften, but will lower ph, if only very slightly. Which is why I advised to go RO route, as the softer water is better all round. Better fish health (in soft water species of course), better plant growth apparently, less Co2 required to reach optimal levels, so less refills, no...
  19. Nathaniel Whiteside

Adding CO2 to hard water = happier fish?

You'll need to inject more, the harder the water is. Depending how hard, could be lethal to livestock. You'd be best to purchase RO water or an RO machine.

Waste water from RO through HMA filter

Are you using a pump on your RO unit?

Recommendations for an accurate PH meter below £80

I've been watching this for a while: http://bit.ly/18DOHmP They're meant to be excellent and very accurate, from a reputable brand. Measures EC too, which is arguably more useful than TDS (which I think it measures too).

    RO help

That's not a flow restrictor, that's a Flush valve isn't it? I turn mine to flush the system then fully close it again and still get waste water. It should be in between the bottom two and top two filters. A flow restrictor is a piece of white plastic ; Flow Restrictors Which should be...

    From tap water to RO?

Hey lee, Do a 10% change with Pure Ro per day till you hit your target. Then just use a mix, or preferably pure RO with Remineralising solution.

    My new TDS pen

Woulda preferred a normal TDS pen myself..
  31. Nathaniel Whiteside

    Which TDS Meter?

Apart from that the leather pouch is NOT husky proof. Mine chewed holes in it
  32. Nathaniel Whiteside

    Which TDS Meter?

I use this one, from this exact seller. And can't fault It whatsoever. http://bit.ly/15Hz0ZR
  33. Nathaniel Whiteside

    Is Lincolnshire more challenging?

You could use Pure RO? George and Ian Holdich prefer it to tap and apparently have much better results. The nutrients they dose keep the TDS up somewhat.
  34. Nathaniel Whiteside

Can you have too much oxygen in the water?

Yeah if the water column is at capacity. Any oxygen your plants create will appear like 'pearling'.
  35. Nathaniel Whiteside

Can you have too much oxygen in the water?

Its clearly doing its Job then Roly! might have to have me one of those :P
  36. Nathaniel Whiteside

Can you have too much oxygen in the water?

Increased pearling is an obvious symptom as the Oxygen content has maxed out and thus unable to draw any more from the plants. Only problem would be potential asphyxiation if subjected to conditions where the oxygen content was below your high levels. If you remove your Oxydator or run out of...

Hard Water or RO, which is better?

Where would we find a flow reducer ian? thanks for all the information thus far, your knowledge regarding water and electrics is great :) like your auto heating water butt
  40. Nathaniel Whiteside

Hard Water or RO, which is better?

Yeah, I've got a pressure gauge on my RO, and I think it sits at about 3 3/4 to 4 bar. Which i think is good by the standard. Yeah, I thought you meant them mate. So what pressure do you think they'll up it to? I do get quite a bit of waste with it, maybe a 1:3 ratio pure : waste. **** EDIT...

Hard Water or RO, which is better?

Hey Ian, I can recall you telling a member to consider an RO booster pump. My mains runs into the RO at between 3 - 4 bar, do you think I'd get any benefit whatsoever in terms of waste water reduction in purchasing one? I'd think not, but I don't know much about pressures and the like...

  44. Nathaniel Whiteside

My water params - please check?

A TDS meter or (even better?) an Electrical Conductivity meter will allow you to find the measure of the dissolved solids or electrical conductivity of the water. Then Its a case of trying to work out what is what from you water report. If say, you mix 50% tap (200 TDS) with your RO, it has a...
  45. Nathaniel Whiteside

My water params - please check?

Hey jack, Im no expert, but its to do with the mineral content of the water itself. Search for Osmoregulation. I think putting hard water species in low mineral water, draws minerals from the fish themselves and this causes ill health. Cheers,

    How to... Big water changes?

Just mentioned it as a matter of interest :) I knew he was going High tech.
  49. Nathaniel Whiteside

    How to... Big water changes?

If its low tech, large frequent water changes are actually worse for it. Causing co2 to be removed, which will have a negative impact on plants. If your running a 'High tech' co2 injected setup, then frequent heavy water changes are a must, because of plant waste and the constant availability...

Yeah Darrel, I just said that
  51. Nathaniel Whiteside

    Mg+K+Fe=no NO3???

Isn't this why we dose Marcos (NPK) and Micros ( Fe etc.) on different days? As the Fe reacts with the macro, forming another compound. Thus no No3 being present?

    Best all round API kits?

Oh, for your triptych. Erm, the best would be to disregard any test kits and let your filter establish over a period of 4-6 weeks. You'll be fine if you add a few at a time from the 4 week period I'd say.
  54. Nathaniel Whiteside

Wow, thanks Clive. I need to read into water solids in general. I find it quite interesting, but haven't had the time. That tank is amazing, adds even more to it knowing the water was that hard. How do fish Fare in such water? Do you get into your African cichlids?

    New Fish

My Eheim airstone diffuses bubbles into s fine mist that slowly blows around the tank, so imagine the absorption rate would be okay.
  60. Nathaniel Whiteside

    New Fish

The best plan would be to take a trays worth of filter media from another tank and do it that way, then you could put them in straight away.
  61. Nathaniel Whiteside

    New Fish

Hey iain, I run an Eheim airpump with an Eheim air stone and you can create a really fine 'mist' with the bubbles, this definitely does the 'trick' for me. I agree you are correct in saying surface agitation is a good point. But the bubbles must add something :D
  62. Nathaniel Whiteside

    New Fish

Good move lisa. 1 point though, I know its hard to believe but airstones do oxygenate water :P
  63. Nathaniel Whiteside

    New Fish

Hey lisa, I would put them back in the old tank & wait about 3-4 weeks for tank to establish a good amount of beneficial bacteria, otherwise you risk killing your fish by ammonia poisoning possibly. I would also have the tank at room temp. The potential problem here could be lack of oxygen, as...

Stained water - tanins + humic acids filtering out???

Yeah keep going with it! Sounds like you've got it sussed! If you can get to a LFS grab a sheet of filter sponge for pond filters and cut it to suit! Winner winner chicken dinner.
  67. Nathaniel Whiteside

Stained water - tanins + humic acids filtering out???

Black sponges sometimes are coated in active carbon, so this could be the issue! Good luck in this venture, as I may do a Rooty blackwater scape like I said before in my Ebi. Ady, have you seen the one at paddock farm? They have a nice blackwater setup. That has definitely made me think about...
