    Light mount

A lot of people DIY these using curtain rods. They are round instead of square but you get all the hardware to mount the vertical supports to the side of the cabinet, elbows for the horizontal bit to hang your lights and available in various anodized finishes. You could consider this as an option

    Lighting ban

Agree with you 100% the new LED stuff - regular price and premium ones - last nowhere close to what is advertised but just past the advertised warranty period is. Im guessing its mostly due to the heat but I have fluorescents that are older than all my LED fittings and they see regular usage and...

    Chihros or Twinstar

Nice. Kind of similar to my DIY light in layout except I just used a few basic R, G and B along with my mixed K whites. @Colin Might I suggest looking at the MakersLED set ? Its good stuff although some bits are expensive. The main thing is the Driver/Controller which supports 5 channels for a...

Lighting Upgrade: Finnex Planted+ to Chihiros WRGB II?

Go for the Chihiros B-60. Its budget friendly and has mostly white LEDs with a few RGB Leds in the mix to improve CRI. You can set a timer on the app or control the dimming but not adjust the individual colours Another option is the Micmol Master. Similar specs as the WRGB Pro but about 20%...

    Lighting ban

If you wanted to get LEDs for a deep tank, the aquarium LED spots and bars with lenses (which you need for penetration) will be expensive. On a budget, you will have to DIY a fixture to which you can add lenses but Im guessing this option is one you wouldnt prefer. So in order to get some budget...

    Chihros or Twinstar

I was going to suggest 2X60cm Chihiros B series lights but the max width supported by them is 80cm. then I thought 3x45cm placed front to back but those top out at 50cm. Looks like you might have to spring for the WRGB 2 Pro 80cm or devise a way to hang the other lights

    DIY Light started flickering

UPDATE : Opened it up and cleaned it out. Replaced the cooling fans because might as well. Checked and redid all the main wire connections - they seemed fine anyways Then I sat and tested each LED with the multimeter. Was quite painful to do 48 LEDs and remove and replace the lenses. I found 2...

    DIY Light started flickering

So this setup has fuses on it but its concealed round the back so I cant remember if its for each string or for the full set of 24 and also what the fuse rating is lol. Also these drivers output is 1300ma so it does limit each string to 650 ma Yeah there was an option for PWM dimming if I had...

    DIY Light started flickering

Im quite rubbish with multimeters and basic electronics in general but I will give it a shot No build thread unfortunately. Overall the light is great in terms or output and colour rendition without the horrible "blurple" look that a lot of fixtures have these days. I made a WRGB light before...

    DIY Light started flickering

Around 9 years ago I made my first proper LED light fixture. Specs are below 72 Bridgelux LEDs divided into 3 x 24 LEDs (2 x 12 LEDs in parallel) Powered by 3 X Meanwell ELN 60-48-D Drivers Dimming controlled by 3 x 10k OHM potentiometers and ONE DC 10V 1A Adaptor thats shared between all 3...

    Stupid lightning question

Im pretty sure all lights come with a power supply dont they ? Never heard of such a case before. Wait for the lights to arrive if you have ordered them before ordering a separate power supply especially if its a pain to return.

    Advice on second LED unit

I would suggest the Micmol Felix light. Thin flat bar that looks good for additional lighting. WRGB can be controlled by an app and the price is lower than a full fixture for that tank

    Popbloom experiences

Not sure if its available where you are but have a look at Neo Helios lights. Good budget WRGB lights, quite a few hobbyist have had success with it

Light spread of WRGB2 Pro and similar bar lights

The cost comes in because I want to use the MakersLED Heatsink for a nice neat fixture along with the associated drivers and hardware plus shipping and customs duty getting them from the USA and some good quality LEDS. All that adds up to $400 with shipping and duty on top. Also Im quite bad at...

Light spread of WRGB2 Pro and similar bar lights

Right now Im leaning towards the Micmol unit for a few reasons even though its 0.5W LEDS vs the 1W ones in the Chihiros unit. 1) Higher light output overall so depending on how it is, I could run it at lower power 2) Discrete W R G and B LEDs vs the all in one LEDs in the Chihiros should give...

Light spread of WRGB2 Pro and similar bar lights

I was eyeing these from chihiros. Its a decent option. Maybe I could get something like this fabricated. One other option is to find SS or Aluminium rods the same thickness as the ones that come with the light and make taller or wider supports Finnex and Hyggar arent available in my country...

Light spread of WRGB2 Pro and similar bar lights

So I have an interesting dilemma. I currently have a 75*45*45 cm tank with a DIY LED light over it with a kind of janky mounting system and waaaay overspecced for my tank (180 W !!). Soon Ill be using this on a friends monster 8*2*3 foot tank with narrower lenses to provide some good...

Light with Weather effects and area control

Maybe ? Do you have a video for that ? Maybe it was presented by Chris Lukhaup or Oliver Knott in an interview style and they were showing off the light features and effects over a planted tank Yeah man unnecessary complexity leads to ..... unnecessary complexity.

Light with Weather effects and area control

Ah I just wanted to know which light it was out of curiosity nothing more. We dont really need these effects and as such Im happy with my 8 year old DIY fixture which I recently upgraded

Light with Weather effects and area control

Yes ! This is the one ! I remember maybe the intro video for this light was over a shop or gallery tank and maybe presented by Chris Lukhaup or something. Thanks for solving the mystery !

Light with Weather effects and area control

Hi all, I remember seeing a thread with a video a couple of years ago (pre covid !) of a new fancypants aquarium light (large tank luminaire) that had control of dimming of almost the entire set of LEDS individually and it also had weather and lightning effects. the Light was a thin flat silver...

    LED DIY wiring help

In my led build each driver will have 2 parallel strings of 10 LEDs each since the driver output is 1300ma and LEDs ate 700ma max I just wanted to check one bit of the wiring. The point where the single +ve of the driver splits into 2 +ves, one for each string as well as where the 2 -ves...

Acrylic Hood and Support design help needed

Unfortunately not. I don't think it should be a problem. It will be similar in weight to a regular hood/canopy. I'll add another support in the back middle
  26. M

Acrylic Hood and Support design help needed

I made it bigger because I have used a lot more LEDs as I wanted to add some various colour spectrum ones because IMO the 6500K ones dont have good CRI and fish and plants dont pop. So large hood size is to distribute them well in order to get good coverage and colour blending and also so that I...

Acrylic Hood and Support design help needed

Aah I got your shelf design now. Just a1-2 inch strip along the sides and then shove the ALU pipe on top of it so that it rests on it. Then I will still be able to slide it back and forth. How would I raise and lower it ? By removing the shelf and sticking it back again ? I didn't understand the...

Acrylic Hood and Support design help needed

I could do that but having the Ls and the slot allows me to slide each bar forwards and backwards giving me the ability to increase or decrease light in a certain part of the tank, for example if I had a sand FG without plants in it. I was just wondering if it would hold up. What do you think of...

Acrylic Hood and Support design help needed

I'm making a new Led lighting unit for my tank. The LEDs are pasted on 3 4x1inch and 29 inches long aluminium box pipes. Each array will have its driver fitted on the back of the pipe. I am making a 30x18x6 inch box out of 8mm acrylic. This would be the same footprint as my tank and the 6 inch...

    LED Floodlight

Is about just as bright as a regular T5 of the same wattage. Only get these if you need a little extra penetration or if you want the shimmer effect

Lets get the 6500k debate going again then

You know what also makes a difference ? The positioning of the tubes. If the light isnt hitting the viewing side of the fish, it is going to look dull. On my first tank there was just a single 18W 6500k tube in the back half. I had guppies at the time and when they would swim to the front to beg...

    Help designing LED fixture

Ill look into the 60 degree optics as well. On TPT they advise area/22 to get the number of LEDS so occording to that its 24 LEDs . Should I go for that or stick to 18, maybe 21 ?

    Help designing LED fixture

So I have found someone who will be able to make me an LED fixture that I will use above my main display tank that is 30x18x16 inches lxbxh. Cheap T5 at my local hardware.

But arent HO bulbs higher wattage ? Obviously they do put out more light compared to a tube the same size but NO. Eg : a 2ft NO T5 is 14W whereas a a 2ft T5 HO is 24W
  37. M

Cheap T5 at my local hardware.

Conspiracy theory : Using 10000K bulbs would result in higher production of phycoerythrin which would make plants redder ????

Where,When+Why Should i use backlighting on an Aquascape?

Where,When+Why Should i use backlighting on an Aquascape?

Re: Where,When+Why Should i use backlighting on an Aquascape I was also wondering if this would help the bottoms of background stems to remain healthy and nice looking rather than how they become all straggly after a while

    Great website to buy LEDs

Hey guys hope you dont consider this as advertising (its not my website anyway). Just thought I would post it on...

    Bleddy timer whats going on!

I have had bad luck with timers as well. I have tried timers from 3 different brands, all mechanical no digital ones. Urgent: Hagen Elite 60 Hood Lighting Failure

If you just need light and dont need the hood itself then just get a clip on light. The Haiyang light on aquatics online is pretty reasonable and well built. Been using it for a while now with no issues. I think it will do the job fine for the Elite 60

    Cheap 150w MH lamps?

Just wondering how come people use cheap fluorescent fittings but always pick branded MHs ? I have seen them for £ 8-10 at places like Maplin. Obviously the bulb would need to be changed but other than that what seems to be the problem ?

    DIY LED lighting?

Im working on a DIY led light bar for my 1ft cube. Ill let you guys know how it goes.
  46. M

Please help me pick one of these T5 lighting units.

I would go with the 24W version of the HaiYang in no. 3. I have used it on a 15 litre and Im currently using it on a 1ft cube. The build quality is great though keep in mind that you cannot replace the bulb. It shouldn't matter anyway as it is quite cheap. The reason I am recommending the 24...

light unit for growing hc in weird size tank?

You could also get the HaiYang light fom Aquatics online
  48. M

    New lighting for my cube

Ive used the Haiyang. Its a great buy for a nano. You dont have to clip it to the edge of the tank, you can even place the tube part on top of the tank, resting on the edges for a luminaire type effect

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

Yay ! But plants do prefer light in the blue/red spectrums right ? Are the photons in a 'better' energy state at these wavelengths ?
  50. M

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

Yeah, your right I guess. Plants just use the photons from light for photosynthesis right ?

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

Some of these guys remind me of Apple fanboys lol. If you look at it logically and use some of the science you learnt in school it would be quite obvious that out of the 3 primary colours of light (red, blue & green) plants would prefer red and blue lights because they can only absord those two...

    otl luminaire 4x39w into 3x39w

Its probably cos the bulbs are set up to run serially so if one of them is taken out, the circuit isnt completed. Instead of three tubes, you could try 2 x HO T5s instead.

    Lighting on a 5ft tank

Nah, silicone sealant doesnt usually smell once it is dry. I had some silicone left over from some window waterproofing work I did yesterday. Ive made a blob out of it which Ill put in the oven for a bit once it dries just to see what happens !!
  54. M

    Lighting on a 5ft tank

I guess silicone sealant could work. Once it is dry, it doesnt burn that easy. Should be fine, I doubt the contact points get hotter than 80-90 C

    Lighting on a 5ft tank

    Will Blu tack work ?
  56. M

    Lighting on a 5ft tank

Just curious. is it possible to use a normal T5 batten fixture to light a tank ? Other than the caps on the ends of the tubes, I dont think there is any other difference between normal and aquarium fittings is there ? It is easy enough to seal up and protect the socket ends. Any thoughts on this ?
  57. M

    Which unit to buy?

Go for the first one. It wil produce more than enough light for your tank. The disadvantages of the 2nd are lower wattage and also the need to replace the actinic tube.
